Chief Justice John Roberts noted down the opinion for a 6-3 majority that included mostly conservatives and one liberal, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. Justice Amy Coney Barrett filed a dissenting opinion that was joined by Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan.

Roberts hardly mentioned the attack on the US Capitol that precipitated the charges, focusing heavily on a detailed discussion of the text of the law.&nbsp;

Roberts noted that the breach “of the Capitol caused members of Congress to evacuate the chambers and delayed the certification process.”

Roberts argued that if Congress had intended for prosecutors to impose 20-year prison sentences for the type of conduct seen on January 6, 2021, lawmakers would have explicitly stated so.

“Nothing in the text or constitutional history suggests that (the law) is designed to impose up to 20 years’ imprisonment on essentially all defendants who commit obstruction of justice in any way and who might be subject to lesser penalties under more specific obstruction statutes,” Roberts wrote.

Special counsel Jack Smith has alleged that Trump's obstruction of the congressional proceeding is far more extensive than the actions of the rioters.

According to Smith, it involves a scheme that began on Election Day and included the use of bogus electoral certificates sent from states across the country.

Still, Trump’s legal team is likely to attempt to use Friday’s Supreme Court opinion to challenge parts of the case, if and when it returns to the trial-level judge.

The special counsel considered the possibility that the Supreme Court would narrow the obstruction charge and said in court filings submitted in Trump’s immunity case before the high court that his use of the charge would still survive under such a ruling.

However the Supreme Court’s judgment released on Friday did not address the fake electors scheme specifically.&nbsp;

The trial which was held in Panama City in April was linked to the Panama Papers and Operation Car Wash scandals where 28 people were facing charges over their role in allegedly setting up shell companies involved in bribery and corruption in Brazil and Germany.&nbsp;

Jurgen Mossack, a German national and one of the founders of the Panamanian law firm which featured prominently in the Panama Papers investigation, was among those who were acquitted.&nbsp;

Ramon Fonseca, the other founder of Mossack Fonseca, died in May after being hospitalised since early April. Since he died before the trial concluded the case against him has been dismissed.&nbsp;

The prosecution had sought 12 years in prison, the maximum sentence for money laundering, for the duo.&nbsp;

However, the judge ruled that the evidence collected from the law firm’s servers had not been gathered in line with due process, casting doubt over its “authenticity and integrity”.&nbsp;

Marquinez in his verdict also noted that the “rest of the evidence was not sufficient and conclusive to determine the criminal responsibility of the defendants.”&nbsp;

The judge also ordered that precautionary measures be lifted against all the defendants and noted that the criminal process for one defendant was cancelled due to their death.&nbsp;

Marquinez ordered fines worth&nbsp;100 balboas ($100) each on 10 witnesses who did not comply with summonses.&nbsp;

In connection to Operation Car Wash, a massive anti-corruption probe which began in Brazil, the judge ruled that it could not be determined that money from illicit sources had entered Panama from the South American country in a bid to help conceal crimes.&nbsp;

The now-defunct law firm came under scrutiny in 2016 after its leaked confidential documents exposed that many of the world’s wealthy stashed assets in offshore companies and triggered dozens of investigations across the world.&nbsp;

Other big names linked to this scandal included former Argentine President Mauricio Macri, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, former British Prime Minister David Cameron, and Argentine football star Lionel Messi.

According to Siles, Zuniga has been handed a terrorism charge, which carries 15 to 20 years in prison as well as a charge for an armed uprising, which carries a sentence of 5-15 years.

A total of 21 active, retired and civilian military personnel were arrested in connection with the attempted coup, on Wednesday (Jun 26) which saw the deployment of troops and tanks in the heart of the capital as they tried to break down a door of the presidential palace.&nbsp;

<h2>Zuniga’s plan to ‘take over’</h2>

In an interview with the Associated Press, the embattled Bolivian president spoke about the former general’s plans to “take over” and become the country’s leader had he been successful in his attempted coup.&nbsp;

He denied that the attack on Wednesday was a “self-coup” designed to garner him political points. “I didn’t escape. I stayed to defend democracy,” Arce told&nbsp;AP.&nbsp;

In recent weeks, the Andean nation has witnessed a rise in tensions over surging prices, shortages of dollars and fuel, and a feud between Arce and Morales ahead of the 2025 election.

The incumbent president told AP that his government “has taken action” to address intermittent gasoline, dollar shortages, and other issues that the country’s economy faces, but denied that the Andean nation was in the midst of an economic crisis.

Arce also said that the government was investigating if the attack was organised by the country’s political opposition.

Tax reform would create money to help “strengthen our healthcare system, making sure that we’re able to make every single solitary person eligible for what I was able to do with the, with the COVID, excuse me, with dealing with everything we had to do with,” he&nbsp;said.&nbsp;

After pausing and a few seconds of fumbling, the incumbent president continued, “We finally beat Medicare.”

Meanwhile, Trump falsely&nbsp;claimed that the US had the “greatest economy in the history of our country” when he was in office.

According to a fact-check by the Associated Press, the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a massive recession and the Trump administration borrowed $3.1 trillion in 2020 to stabilise it.&nbsp;

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday said he was drawing up a "comprehensive plan" for how Kyiv believes the war with Russia should end.

There are no public talks ongoing between Ukraine and Russia and based on public statements by Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the two sides appear as far apart as ever when it comes to the terms of a potential peace settlement.

Zelensky hosted a major international summit in Switzerland earlier this month -- to which Russia was not invited -- to rally support for Ukraine's position.

"It is very important for us to show a plan to end the war that will be supported by the majority of the world," Zelensky said on Friday.

"This is the diplomatic route we are working on," he said at a press conference in Kyiv alongside Slovenian President Natasa Pirc Musar.

More than 90 countries sent leaders and senior officials to the two-day summit with Zelensky in Switzerland.

The vast majority of whom agreed to a final communique that stressed the need for Ukraine's "territorial integrity" to be respected in any settlement.

But some key countries that attended, like India, did not agree and others, like Russia's ally China, boycotted the summit in protest at Moscow not being invited.

Ukraine has repeatedly said Russia must pull its troops out of its internationally recognised territory, including the peninsula of Crimea that Moscow annexed in 2014, before peace talks can start.

Meanwhile Putin, who launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, is demanding Ukraine effectively capitulate by evacuating even more territory across its east and south.

In Brussels on Thursday, Zelensky said he would put forward a "detailed plan" in a matter of months.

"We don't have too much time," he said, pointing to the high casualty rate amongst soldiers and civilians.

Russia's troops are slowly advancing on the battlefield, claiming to have seized another small frontline village on Friday.

They currently occupy around a fifth of Ukraine and in 2022 claimed to have annexed four more regions, none of which they fully controlled.
