A woman in the US has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for embezzling over $100 million from a grant programme designed to aid military children and families, officials announced.

Janet Yamanaka Mello, 57, was found guilty of five counts of mail fraud and five counts of filing false tax returns for a complex scheme she executed over six years while working for the United States Army, stated the US Attorney's Office for the Western District of Texas.

Mello served as a financial manager for the Army Morale, Welfare, and Recreation programme at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, focusing on child and youth services, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.

The Associated Press reported that Mello allegedly purchased luxury properties and 82 vehicles, including a Maserati, a Mercedes, a 1954 Corvette, and a Ferrari Fratelli motorcycle. In one instance, she spent $923,000 on jewellery in a single day in 2022.

Over the six years her business was active, authorities reported that Mello committed fraud in 49 separate cases, requesting $117 million in grants and obtaining nearly $109 million. To conceal the fraud, she also misreported her income for the tax years 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022.

Esparza expressed that his office "will continue to work tirelessly to prosecute those who illegally seek personal gain at the expense of their fellow citizens."

Defence attorney Albert Flores told the Associated Press that Mello was deeply remorseful. "She realizes she committed a crime, she did wrong and is very ashamed," Flores said.&nbsp;

Taiwan braces for Typhoon Gaemi: Two deaths reported, hundreds of flights cancelled

The death toll from landslides in Ethiopia earlier this week has risen to 257 and is expected to almost double, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) said on Thursday.

Heavy rains triggered a landslide burying people in the Gofa Zone of southern Ethiopia on Sunday night and a second one on Monday engulfed those engaged in rescue efforts.

"The death toll is expected to rise to up to 500 people as per information received from local authorities," UNOCHA said in a report.

On Tuesday, Ethiopia's National Disaster Risk Management Commission had put the death toll at 229.

Dagmawi Ayele, an administrator for the Gofa Zone said rescuers had so far recovered 226 bodies, which had been buried after a funeral ceremony, and were searching for 20 more.

Multiple people were hospitalised after an escalator fire broke out at York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK Airport) on Wednesday (Jul&nbsp;23), according to Port Authority officials.

Thick smoke filled Terminal 8 of JFK Airport around 7 am after a fire ignited on an escalator in Concourse C. At least nine people received minor injuries due to smoke inhalation, four of whom were hospitalised, according to New York ABC station WABC.&nbsp;

However, none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

American Airlines, which occupies the terminal, said three American Eagle regional departures were cancelled as a result of the fire, out of 89 total American flights scheduled to depart from Kennedy on Wednesday.

During the proceeding, he was asked when he began to notice "cognitive decline" in Biden by Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz. To which Wray answered by saying that he didn't meet the President often "but what you're describing is not something that I've observed during my interactions."

On Trump assassination bid, Wray said that an FBI investigation is underway. According to the FBI director, the federal agency has been analysing Crooks' movements and social media activity but it could not find the motive behind the attack on Trumo.

“We do not know the motive. That is obviously one of the central questions in our investigation, and it's been very frustrating to us that a lot of the usual kind of low-hanging-fruit places that we would find that have not yielded significant clues about his motive,” Wray said.

Meanwhile, the US political landscape is shaking as President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.
