Ukraine said on Tuesday its biggest cross-border assault of the war to date would prevent Russia sending more troops to fight in its eastern Donetsk region and disrupt military logistics, and that Kyiv had no interest in occupying Russian territory.

Ukraine blindsided Moscow by pouring thousands of troops into the western Russian region of Kursk last week in a surprise operation that Kyiv says has seen its forces take 1,000 sq km of land, its largest gain&nbsp;since 2022.

"Unlike Russia, Ukraine does not need other people's property. Ukraine is not interested in taking the territory of the Kursk region, but we want to protect the lives of our people," Ukraine's foreign ministry's spokesperson said.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has said Ukrainian forces have taken control of areas in the Kursk region that Russia has used to launch more than two thousand cross-border strikes on Ukraine since June.

"It should be emphasised that the operation ... helps the front line because it does not allow Russia to transfer additional units to (Ukraine's) Donetsk region, complicates its military logistics," foreign ministry spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi said.

Russian forces have been trying to advance for months on multiple fronts in the Donetsk region, taking advantage of their greater troop numbers to steadily inch forward towards cities like the Kyiv-held logistics hub of Pokrovsk.

Reuters could not independently verify the situation on the battlefield.

For now, there is no sign of a letup for Ukraine in the east, where Kyiv's military said earlier it had recorded the largest number of battles with Russian forces on the Pokrovsk front in a single day since before the Kursk incursion.

Ukrainian military spokesman Dmytro Lykhoviy told Reuters they had noted a movement of Russian troops from Ukraine's south to other areas, likely including Kursk, this week.

But he said the number of attacks had not reduced as a result and that it was too early to draw conclusions.

Kyiv's military on Tuesday restricted the movement of civilians within a 20 km (12 mile) zone of the northeastern border area.

It cited an "increase in the intensity of hostilities" and the activation of Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups, adding the measure was temporary and that residents could still access their homes by showing proof of registration.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has vowed to hit back at Ukraine with a "worthy response" and accused Kyiv's "Western masters" of giving Ukrainian forces help.

Russia's acting regional governor in Kursk said on Monday that Ukraine's forces had taken control of 28 settlements in an incursion that was about 12 km deep and 40 km wide.

A reform of the UN&nbsp;Security Council that does not address the lack of representation, particularly in the permanent category, would only “exacerbate” the current imbalances in its composition and render it “ill-equipped” to address current global challenges, India has said on behalf of the G4 countries.

“Recent global geopolitical events have clearly shown that the U.N. Security Council is unable to deliver on its primary responsibilities to safeguard international peace and security when the world needs it the most,” Chargé d’Affaires and Deputy Permanent Representative of India to the UN&nbsp;Ambassador R. Ravindra said on Monday (August 12, 2024).

He was delivering a statement on behalf of the G4 countries – Brazil, Germany, Japan and India – at the UNSC High-Level Debate on ‘Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Addressing the Historical Injustice and enhancing Africa’s effective representation in the UNSC’.

The realities of 1945, when the Council was established, have long been superseded by current geopolitical realities, with the need for change being felt across the board, Ravindra said ahead of next month’s annual high-level UN&nbsp;General Assembly session which world leaders will attend.

He noted that for the G4, the primary reason for the underperformance of the critical UN&nbsp;Security Council remains the non-representation of Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the under-representation of Asia Pacific in the permanent category.

“It is the G4’s firm belief, shared we believe by Africa and other groups, that any reform of the Council that does not address the lack of representation, particularly in the permanent category, would only exacerbate the current imbalances in the Council’s composition and render it ill-equipped to address Monday‘s (August 12, 2024) international challenges,” he said.

The 15-nation UNSC comprises five permanent, veto-wielding members – China, France, Russia, the UK&nbsp;and the US&nbsp;– and 10 non-permanent members, without veto powers, who are elected for two-year terms.

Underlining that the G4 has “walked the talk” when it comes to correcting historical injustices done to Africa, Ravindra said the group’s model of UNSC reforms has clearly proposed that the Security Council membership increase from the current 15 to 25-26 by adding six permanent and four or five non-permanent members.

Among the six new permanent members, two each are proposed to be from African States and Asia Pacific states, one from Latin American and Caribbean states, and one from West European and Other States.

“On rights and privileges associated with permanent memberships, such as the veto, we also support the Common African Position that as long as it exists, it should be available to all permanent members, both new and old alike,” he&nbsp;said.

Ravindra added that the G4 is convinced that African representation in permanent and non-permanent categories will be an indispensable part of UNSC reform for a more representative and effective Council.

The group believes it is “inconceivable” that Africa, which constitutes over 70 per cent of the UNSC’s agenda items under discussion, does not get a permanent voice at the horse-shoe table.

Crimes against humanity and war crimes committed by the&nbsp;Myanmar&nbsp;military have "escalated at an alarming rate", UN investigators warned Tuesday, citing systematic torture, gangrape and abuses against children.

The United Nations' Independent Investigative Mechanism for&nbsp;Myanmar&nbsp;(IIMM) said that in the last six months, more than three million people are estimated to have been forced to flee their homes, as conflict spirals within the country.

"We have collected substantial evidence showing horrific levels of brutality and inhumanity across&nbsp;Myanmar," said IIMM chief Nicholas Koumjian.

"Many crimes have been committed with an intent to punish and induce terror in the civilian population."

The investigators said they had collected significant evidence of more intensive and violent war crimes, including aerial attacks on schools, religious buildings and hospitals, with no apparent military target.

The investigators are looking into unlawful imprisonment, including arbitrary detention and "manifestly unfair trials" of perceived opponents of the military junta.

"Thousands of people have been arrested and many tortured or killed in detention," the IIMM said.

Myanmar's ruling junta came to power in the February 2021 coup that ousted Aung San Suu Kyi's elected government, ending a 10-year experiment with democracy and plunging the Southeast Asian nation into bloody turmoil.

The report's findings were based on almost 28 million items of information collected from more than 900 sources. The team also studied evidence such as videos, geospatial imagery and forensics.

While most of the information concerns crimes allegedly committed by the&nbsp;Myanmar&nbsp;security forces, the monitor said there was also credible evidence of crimes committed by armed groups fighting against the military.

"This includes summary executions of civilians suspected of being military informers or collaborators," the investigators said.

It is&nbsp;also&nbsp;probing&nbsp;potential&nbsp;crimes&nbsp;committed&nbsp;against&nbsp;the Rohingya during&nbsp;the&nbsp;Myanmar&nbsp; military's 2016 and 2017 clearance operations.

"No one has been held accountable for any crimes, which emboldens perpetrators and deepens the culture of impunity in the country. We are trying to break this cycle," said Koumjian.

He claimed the IIMM had made considerable progress in building criminal cases against those most responsible.

"The mechanism hopes that the evidence it collects will one day be presented in a court of law and that those responsible will face justice," the report concluded.

Israeli prime minister's office (PMO) has clapped back after Defence Minister Yoav Gallant called Benjamin Netanyahu's goal of achieving a "total victory" over Hamas in the ongoing war "gibberish". Netanyahu accused Gallant of adopting "an anti-Israel narrative" that was hurting the momentum of the forces and the ongoing talks. “When Gallant adopts the anti-Israel narrative, he harms the chances of reaching a hostage-release deal,” the Israeli PMO was quoted as saying by the New York Times. Notably, Gallant made the rather rebellious remark in front of lawmakers during a private security briefing on Monday (Aug 12). “I hear all the heroes with the war drums, ‘absolute victory,’ and all that gibberish. I saw that courage when it came down to the discussion,” said Gallant, according to reports. “I am not prepared for you to call the prime minister’s words ‘gibberish’,” Likud MK Tally Gotliv, a firebrand populist, reportedly said in response. “I am prepared to debate with facts and action. I might be weak with media and politics, but on security, I know what I am talking about,” Gallant responded. After the meeting, Gotliv urged Netanyahu to sack Gallant. She was also stopped by the chair of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Yuli Edelstein to ask questions to Gallant. Notably, Gallant was fired by Netanyahu in March 2023 after he warned about the rifts in the national security apparatus. However, owing to public protests, Gallant was reinstated two weeks later. According to the Pentagon, Defense Secretary Llyod Austin spoke with his Israeli counterpart and also told the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group to sail more quickly to the area. PM Modi is expected to visit the prosperous Southeast Asian country in the first week of September, along with his visit to Thailand for the BIMSTEC summit.

While the BIMSTEC summit is scheduled on 4th September, the PM could visit Singapore after that.&nbsp;

The last visit of PM Modi to Singapore was a bilateral&nbsp;in 2018 visit and later to attend the 13th East Asia Summit. During his visit that year, he also addressed the Shangri La Dialogue, becoming the first Indian prime minister to do so.

More Indian ministers could join the key meeting as well as focus on signing pacts on several areas, from food safety to digitalisation, to semiconductors.

The first such meeting took place in Delhi in September of 2022.
