South Korean leader calls for setting global AI standards ahead of meeting with Biden, Kishida

South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol said that Seoul, Tokyo and Washington will enhance cooperation in Artificial Intelligence, quantum, space and other key critical and emerging technologies, and that the three countries will "work together to set global standards" in this regard.

When asked in a Bloomberg interview, what he would like to see from the meeting in terms of economic cooperation, he said: “First, we plan to further solidify the framework for our cooperation to strengthen the resilience of supply chains. Also, we will conduct joint research and enhance cooperation in AI, quantum, space and other key critical and emerging technologies, which will become future growth engines, and we will work together to set global standards.”

South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol's interview came ahead of the US-Japan-South Korea joint summit in the United States later this week.

The South Korean leader further said that the world would never accept North Korea as a nuclear state.

"The complete denuclearisation of North Korea is a clear and consistent goal of the international community, including the Republic of Korea and the United States," Yoon said. "The international community will never accept North Korea as a nuclear power under any circumstances."

Earlier, during President Yoon Suk-Yeol's US visit in April, Yoon and Biden built a consensus onmilitary assets' deployment, including nuclear-missile submarines near South Korea.

Additionally, they established a Nuclear Consultative Group, granting Seoul an increased role in determining how Washington deploys its nuclear protective umbrella.

Focus on deterring North Korea: What else to expect from trilateral?

The Japan-South Korea-US trilateral scheduled later this week, where negotiations will be focused on extended deterrence, involving a robust force capable of repelling adversaries from achieving their military and political objectives through aggression, is being deemed as a potential moment that would mark a fresh chapter in the relationships among the three parties.

This endeavour will provide valuable support to the Biden administration's efforts in managing threats from entities like North Korea.

The forthcoming Camp David meeting will also delve into discussions concerning the enhancement of trilateral defence exercises.

Furthermore, the three nations plan to put into practice their agreement to share real-time missile warning data regarding North Korea, a commitment made during a summit last November, within the current year.
