Japan: Husband makes nearly 100 blank calls to wife daily for weeks because he was 'jealous'

Love knows no bounds! A husband in Japan proved the phrase was true, by making over 100 blank calls to his wife for over a month, because he “loved her so much”.

Japanese media outlet Kobe Shimbun reported about the 31-year-old woman at the receiving end of the calls who reached out to the police for help. She told the police about the several blank calls made every day to her in July and August and that she suspected her husband was behind them.

The woman told the outlet that every time she answered the call, the person on the other end would stay quiet. She told her husband about the calls but he brushed aside her concerns and didn't help in any way.

Slowly she started to notice a pattern - the calls would stop when her husband was sleeping, playing video games or was with her. This made her suspicious. So she decided to do a little digging herself.

She went out shopping with her husband one day and kept a watch on him the entire time. The woman noticed that her husband didn't touch the phone the entire day and at the same time, the blank calls stopped.

After making her own observations, she went to the police and explained the matter. They checked her husband's phone records and found that he was indeed the one making the nuisance calls. He used to make the calls in private mode in a bid to harass his wife.

An investigation was carried out in the matter and the police did not find any hints of conflicts in the relationship.

The reason for this strange act was later revealed to be jealousy. Local media reports suggest that the man was unhappy with his wife talking to other men, and so decided to punish her with the blank calls.

In one such incident, he found her on the phone with a man but didn't know what they were talking about. This is what prompted him to pursue the strange calls.

Japanese law makes nuisance calls illegal citing the significant psychological distress they can cause. Those violating the law may face up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 1 million yen (US$7,000), along with a prohibition order.

The man has been arrested and his punishment has not been disclosed.
