Dignitaries from G20 member countries and blocs have started arriving at the Bharat Mandapam for dinner hosted by Indian President Droupadi Murmu.

UN General Secretary Antonio Guterres, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom, OECD Secretary General Mathias Cormann have arrived. Other leaders are due to arrive shortly.

International Solar Alliance (ISA) Director General Dr. Ajay Mathur applauded India's G20 presidency as a "catalyst in shifting towards a human-centric view." 

“The role played by the Indian G20 Presidency as a catalyst in shifting towards a human-centric view, recognizing the importance of resilience and reliability in global supply chains, and boosting multilateralism through the reform of global institutions has been remarkable."

He also said that the Indian presidency has led as "the voice of Global South gathering inputs and ideas which will lead to solutions that are more easily deployable. The Presidency saw the largest-ever participation from African countries and has also pushed for the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member of the G20."

The upcoming presidency of the G20 Summit will be held by Brazil. Keeping this in mind, Brazil's Lula vowed to launch the "Global Alliance against Hunger." 

"It is urgent to rescue the spirit of solidarity that animates the Sustainable Development Goals so that we can formulate joint responses to the economic challenges of our time. We will launch, during our G20 presidency, a Global Alliance against Hunger. We hope to count on the support and engagement of all member countries to build an increasingly less unequal and more fraternal world," Lula said on the sidelines of the G20 Summit. 

EU president Ursula von der Leyen expressed confidence in the new trade route unveiled. "It will be the most direct connection to date between India, the gulf, and Europe which will make trade 40 percent faster creating business opportunities for everyone," she remarked. 

"Investment in new trade route infrastructure development deliberated over past few months will benefit everyone," said MBS. 

"This has been the most ambitious presidency in the history of G20," says G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant.

"Concerning the war in Ukraine, while recalling the discussion in Bali, we reiterated our national positions and resolutions adopted at the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly (A/RES/ES-11/1 and A/RES/ES-11/6) and underscored that all states must act in a manner consistent with the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter in its entirety. In line with the UN Charter, all states must refrain from the threat or use of force to seek territorial acquisition against the territorial integrity and sovereignty or political independence of any state. The use or threat of use of nuclear weapons is inadmissible."

I announce to adopt this declaration. On this occasion, I congratulate my Sherpa, ministers, who worked hard for it and made it possible...," says PM Modi.

On the first day of G20 summit, PM Modi and Kishida's bilateral engagement saw discussion around cooperation in connectivity, commerce and other sectors.

"Held productive talks with PM @kishida230. We took stock of India-Japan bilateral ties and the ground covered during India's G20 Presidency and Japan's G7 Presidency. We are eager to enhance cooperation in connectivity, commerce and other sectors," PM Modi wrote on X. 

Indian and Britain prime ministers, in their bilateral meet, "discussed ways to deepen trade linkages and boost investment."

"India and UK will keep working for a prosperous and sustainable planet," PM Modi wrote on X. 
 

In a statement, President of the European Commission (EU), Ursula von der Leyen at the first session, ‘One Earth', of the G-20 said, "...In the next 5 years alone, the EU will invest at least 4 billion euros in renewable energy and hydrogen in developing economies through our Global Gateway plan..." 

G20 Summit in India: On the sidelines of the G20 Summit which is taking place here in New Delhi, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is holding various bilateral meetings with world leaders who have marked their presence to voice their positions on key global issues.

The inclusion of the African Union in the G20 grouping is being welcomed by leaders from all quarters. Kenyan President William Ruto on Saturday while welcoming the move said the African Union's inclusion into the bloc will help give Africa "voice."

"With Africa poised to grow in the coming years, a seat will allow it to shape the decisions of G20 to ensure the continent's interests are advanced. The outcome of the just concluded Africa Climate Summit including fundamental reforms of international financial institutions and multilateral development banks is one thing that AU will advance," he reportedly said.

South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa says on X, "We are delighted that the G20 has accepted the African Union as a member of the G20..."

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak tweets,  "15 years ago, #G20 leaders came together for the first time to restore global growth after the financial crisis.  We meet at a time of enormous challenges – the world is looking to the G20 once again to provide leadership. Together I believe we can address these challenges."

Reuters news agency quoting sources has reported that the delgates attending the G20 Summit in New Delhi have reached an understanding on the kind of language used to describe the Russia-Ukraine war.

The communique would be similar to the one issued in Indonesia at the G20 Summit in 2022, where most nations condemned Russia for the invasion, and also there were also divergent views.

Earlier in the meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of host India inaugurated the meeting by calling on members to end a “global trust deficit” and announced that the bloc was granting permanent membership to the African Union in an effort to make it more representative.

“Today, as the president of G20, India calls upon the entire world to first convert this global trust deficit into one trust and one confidence,” he said. “It is time for all of us to move together.”

Spain’s Vice-President Nadia Calvino says "There has been a very strong call for multilateralism and confidence in our joint ability to cooperate and to work together to face global challenges such as climate change. The discussion this morning has been focussed on this and the welcome of the European Union, joining the G20. There was a joint agreement to fulfil the commitments made in Paris and in the different international Summits.  There was a joint commitment to contribute to the upcoming CoP28 meeting..."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared glimpses of the first session of G20 Summit in New Delhi. The session was historic considering that the African Union was given permamnent membership of the G20 grouping under India's presidency.

Prime Minister Modi will have two bilateral meetings after the conclusion of the first session of G20 meeting.

PM Modi and his British counterpart will meet around 1.45 pm.
Later at 3pm, Modi and France's Macron will meet.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived on Sunday in New Delhi for the G20 Summit. He was seen wearing a black eye patch on the right side of his face, the result of a jogging accident on the weekend.

According to the reports, Scholz fell while jogging on Saturday and sustained bruises to his face.

Indian President Droupadi Murmu extends warm welcome to delgates who arrived for G20 Summit in New Delhi.

"A warm welcome to all Heads of Delegations of the G20 nations, Guest countries, and International Organisations participating in the 18th G20 Summit in New Delhi," she said on X.

To promote digital payments and UPI, foreign delegations in G20 will be given Rs 2,000 in pre-loaded wallets. The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is an instant payment system developed in India, by the National Payments Corporation of India. The interface facilitates inter-bank peer-to-peer and person-to-merchant transactions.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in New Delhi for the G-20 Summit. 

The German side has been advocating for a strong wording on combating Climate Change.

"(We want to see) the problem of Ukraine tackled in the right way. We have a war of aggression that has a huge impact on the world economy, and that must be addressed in the right way," German ambassador in New Delhi Philipp Ackermann told WION's Principal Diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal right before the summit. 

"If President Xi Jinping has not been able to come, perhaps there are domestic reasons. It is also possible that diplomatically, China may have come to a determination that they do not want to, in a way, acknowledge the kind of focus and attention India is getting," strategic affairs expert Uday Bhaskar told PTI news agency.

According to Reuters news agency, the G20 negotiators were unable to resolve disagreements over the wording of the summit declaration on the war in Ukraine on Friday, leaving any possible breakthrough to bloc leaders during the two-day meeting.

The 38-page draft that was circulated among members and which Reuters has access to left the "geopolitical situation" paragraph blank, while it had agreed on the 75 other paragraphs which included climate change, cryptocurrencies and reforms in multilateral development banks.

G20 sherpas have been struggling for days to agree on the language because of differences over the war, hoping to get Russia on board to produce a communique.

India's G20 sherpa, or negotiator, Amitabh Kant, said earlier in the day the "New Delhi Leaders' Declaration is almost ready, I would not like to dwell on it ... This declaration will be recommended to the leaders."

the theme of this year's G20 Summit, which is taking place under India's presidency, is "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" or "One Earth - One Family - One Future". It is inspired from the ancient Sanskrit text of the Maha Upanishad. Essentially, the theme affirms the value of all life — human, animal, plant, and microorganisms - and their interconnectedness on the planet Earth and in the wider universe.

The world leaders will start reaching Bharat Mandapam, the avenue where the G20 leaders are being hosted. from 9.20 am.

The first session of the G20 summit will begin at 10.30 am, whose theme is 'One Earth', and it will last for 3 hours

From 1.30 pm to 3 pm, there will be round of bilateral meetings.

The second session of the summit will begin at 3 pm, which will last for approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. The theme of the second season is 'One Family'.

Here, a round of bilateral meetings will be seen from 4.45 pm to 5.30 pm. 

Later, at 8 pm, President of India Draupadi Murmu will host a dinner for the guests which will be held in the Bharat Mandapam.
