Former British prime minister Boris Johnson, who as PM introduced arequirement for voters to show photo ID while voting, was turned away from a polling station on Thursday (May 2)after he forgot to bring his ID, British media reported.
In 2022, Johnson introducedthe Elections Act requiring photo ID. A report by Sky News on Friday said that Johnson attemptedto cast his ballot in South Oxfordshire, where a police and crime commissioner for the Thames Valley wasbeing selected. However, hewas turned away.

A spokesperson for Johnson told Politicothatthe former PMwas turned awayat the first attempt but did say he managed to cast his ballot.

Under theElections Act, voters must bring a photo ID to cast their ballot.A fewother provisions of the act includeextending the current imprint rules onto digital election material andtightening spending limits on third parties.
The act was provedto becontroversial,with fears that it wouldprovea deterrent to voting, particularly among disadvantaged groups, Sky News reported.Last year, the Electoral Commission warned the act could excludehundreds of thousands of people, including those with disabilities and from minority ethnic backgrounds.

The commission found out that in local elections in May 2023, 14,000 peoplewere not able tovote because they did not have acceptable ID. In the UK, the acceptable forms of voter ID includepassports, driving licences, andcertainlocal travel cards.
