Amid the escalating tensions between India and China on the border, the Trump administration has said that the US president is aware of it and Washington is monitoring the situation.

"The president is aware of it. We're monitoring the situation between Indian and Chinese forces along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh," White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany told reporters, as quoted by PTI.

"We have seen the Indian Army statement that 20 Indian soldiers died as a result of the confrontation today, and we extend our deepest condolences on that."

As many as 20 Indian Army personnel were killed following a clash with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley late on Monday.

The situation remains on the boil as this was the first time after the war in 1962 that soldiers of two Asian giants were killed in clashes on the India-China border in Ladakh.

The White House official also rejected the idea of the US acting as a mediator, which US President Donald Trump intended a few weeks ago.

"No formal plans on that beyond what I already said in expressing our absolute condolences to the Indian soldiers that died as a result of today's confrontation. We extend our deepest condolences there," McEnany said.
