Doctoral student at top Chinese university accuses professor of sexual harrasment

A female doctoral student studyingat Renmin University of China has accused her professor of sexual harassment. A report by the news agency Associated Press on Monday (July 22) said that the university fired the professor after the accusation surfaced.

The student was studying liberal arts at Renmin. On Sunday, she posted nearly an hour-long video on Weibo where she said thather supervisor, an ex-vice dean and former Communist Party (CCP) representative at the university in Beijing, physically and verbally abused her.

Scolding and threats to the victim

The woman said for more than two years after she rejected her professor, he assigned her many tasks, scolded her and even threatened that she would not graduate. She posted audio clips on the social media platform which she said were evidence of the harassment.

“At this moment, I can no longer endure it and have nowhere to retreat, so I am speaking out,” the woman said and demanded that the professor be punished and a new supervisor be appointed for her.

She didn't reveal her face in the video as she was wearing a mask but held up an identification card.

The investigation

The woman's post on Weibo garnered millions of likes, with many users leaving comments in support of the student. As per the Associated Press report, Renmin University said on Monday it concluded that the complaints against the professor were true following an investigation.

Apart from firing the professor, the university also revoked his CCP membership and reported the incident to authorities in accordance with the law.

The university said that the professor had seriously betrayed the original mission of teaching and educating and that his act violated party discipline and school rules.
