A seriously injured gunman was taken into custody after he fired multiple shots from a floor of the Four Seasons Hotel in Midtown Atlanta on Tuesday (Oct 29).

A police officer was also severely injured while taking down the gunman, Atlanta Police said to NBC News.

Police said the suspected shooter fired at least once from the balcony of the 33rd floor of the hotel. He also fired through walls and doors of the 53-storey building but no injuries were reported. At least 15 shots were fired.

The man was carrying three guns, including a handgun and a long gun. The shooting occurred after the man had a dispute with a worker in the building.

Police reached the spot around 10 in the morning and officers "attempted to get the individual to come to the door to speak" with them but the alleged shooter "refused to do so."

He threw a weapon from his balcony while the cops were telling him to come down. The floor was evacuated immediately and officers breached the floor to take him into custody.

Videos of the incident shared on social media showed officers standing outside the building while the man fired gunshots at them.

Another footage showed the police carrying the injured man, identified as 70-year-old Jay Stevens Berger, into an ambulance.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has launched a probe into the matter, and the building has been seized.

The Four Seasons hotel, opened in 1997, occupies 19 stories of the building out of its 53 stories. The hotel occupies 244 rooms, 23 of which are designated suites.
