Two individuals, including a 6-year-old boy, were killed and several were injured after a vehicle drove onto a field during a soccer game in Wichita, US, officials said on Saturday (October 18). Authorities confirmed the incident took place at 3:25 p.m. local time at the Stryker Sports Complex. They found community members rendering medical aid to the injured and a truck on the field after the incident where the driver still inside the vehicle, along with two juveniles.
Aaron Moses of the Wichita Police Department said the 34-year-old woman driver, whose child was playing soccer on a different field, barreled through the Stryker Sports Complex around 3:25 p.m. local time. He added that the woman driver is currently in custody and has been quite cooperative in the probe.
Meanwhile, police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether any charges will be filed. Two “juveniles” were in the truck along with the mother, he said. Eleven people sustained injuries, including five children, ranging from bruises to severe wounds, though police noted none appeared to be life-threatening. The identities of the boy and the 35-year-old man who died have not yet been released.
When first responders reached the scene, they found community members already providing medical aid to the injured, Moses said. “The community was very impressive when our firefighters arrived,” Wichita Fire Chief Michael Mire said. “They didn’t begin patient care; they continued patient care, taking charge of what the community had already begun providing to those who were injured.”
