'Agree to suspend bombing of Iran for two weeks', says Trump; calls it 'double-sided ceasefire'

US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday (April 7) that he has agreed to pause bombing operations against Iran for two weeks as part of a conditional ceasefire arrangement, hinging on Tehran’s full reopening of the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz. "Subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks," Trump posted just an hour before his deadline to launch large-scale military strikes.

"This will be a double-sided CEASEFIRE!" Trump wrote. Trump said the temporary halt reflects significant progress already made in achieving U.S. military goals and advancing toward a broader peace framework in the region.

"The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East.

“We received a 10-point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate.” The development follows a last-minute diplomatic push by Pakistan aimed at preventing a major escalation, after Trump had warned that a "whole civilization will die tonight" if an agreement was not reached before his deadline. "Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two-week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated," Trump added.

Israel also agrees to temporary ceasefire: White House official

Meanwhile, Israel is part of the two-week ceasefire announced by President Donald Trump just 90 minutes before his deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face intensified military strikes on civilian infrastructure, a senior White House official told CNN. According to the official, Israel has agreed to suspend its bombing campaign during the negotiation period as diplomatic efforts continue.
