Texas girl dies after eating pizza at school, parents sue alleging medical negligence

An 11-year-old girl, Emerson Kate Cole, died in Texas after having pizza at school as she was allergic to dairy.

Cole was a student in a Middle School in La Joya, Texas. She had pizza at school and then developed an allergic reaction and was taken to the Nurse's office.

The medical staff called her mother seeking permission to give her daughter Benadryl, to which the mother agreed.

However, it is reported that the child threw up the medicine and by the time Cole's grandmother reached the school she collapsed.

Kate Cole passed away at the hospital two days later.

The parents have filed a lawsuit against the school, claiming that it was a sheer act of negligence on the part of the school due to which they had to bear an irreplaceable loss.

If the school had followed her medical plan such an unfortunate incident could have been avoided.

Furthermore, had the school administration been prompt enough and given her an epinephrine shot, a life-saving device that counteracts severe allergic reactions Cole's life would have been saved.

An unfavourable immunological response to casein and whey, two proteins present in cow's milk, is known as a dairy allergy.

Though it can last into adulthood, it is one of the most prevalent food allergies among young kids.

It is imperative for individuals diagnosed with dairy allergy to switch to alternatives to dairy such as soy milk, almond milk, etc.

These alternatives ensure your body gets the desired nutrients without posing a health hazard.
