Skeletons found buried under a church floor were not something one UK couple was expecting when they started renovating it to build their new home. But they went ahead and renovated it and now live with the skeletons still in their place.
A UK couple started tearing apart a church to build their new home, and ended up discovering more than 80 human skeletons under it. Lucy and Rhys Thomas were renovating a 900-year-old church and knew they would come across some human remains. An archaeologist told them there would be five to six of them, but they were not ready for that many. The mom of five told British outlet Metro about the grisly finding, and said more than 80 human remains were “buried within the floors of the church” in Peterstone Wentlooge, Wales. “[An archaeologist] said we would only find about five or six bodies, when they started digging, it became apparent there was a lot more than we first envisioned,” the 53-year-old said. She later learned that it was common for the rich and powerful to be buried under churches ages ago. Talking about how the skeletons slowly came to light, Lucy told Metro, “The first few were uncomfortable, but we gradually warmed to the process."
From medieval church to modern home - Skeletons left in their original place
The skeletons were buried in all sorts of ways. She saw "husbands and wives, parents with children" buried together. The couple did not remove the skeletons and decided to let them lie in their final resting places. They are building their house around those skeletons now. St. Peter's Church was founded in 1142, and the couple spent four years converting it into their home. To go from a centuries-old church to a house was not easy. Metro reported that it took them four years to finally build the house of their dreams. They chose to keep several original structures and areas intact. Their house has the church walls, tower and bells from the initial building. They removed the engravings on the stone floor and used it for a patio. To cover their skeletons, they installed underfloor heating in their new home. They also have a bar and a hot tub.
