TASS news agency quoted a Moscow court as saying it had received the appeal from the defence team of the Wall Street Journal reporter.

Gershkovich was arrested on March 29 in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg on spying charges that carry up to 20 years in prison. No date has been set for his trial, and on Thursday his detention in Moscow's Lefortovo prison was extended by three months to Nov. 30.

He&nbsp;failed in two previous appeals, in April and June.

The United States says Russia is using Gershkovich to conduct "hostage diplomacy", at a time when Moscow's war in Ukraine has plunged relations with Washington to their lowest point in more than 60 years.

A Russian court on Thursday (August 24) extended the pre-trial detention of American journalist Evan Gershkovich by three months. Gershkovich, a journalist with the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), was arrested on March 29 in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg on spying charges that carry sentence of up to 20 years in prison. According to a report by the news agency Reuters on Thursday, the court extended his detention from August 30 to November 30.&nbsp;

The FSB said the WSJ journalist was collecting information about a Russian defence company that was a state secret, and the Kremlin said he was caught "red-handed" but has provided no detail to support the assertion.&nbsp;

The WSJ has rejected the spying charges and the United States has accused Russia of conducting "hostage diplomacy." US President Joe Biden said that the journalist's detention was totally illegal.

No date has been set for a trial. Gershkovich has so far failed in two appeals, in April and June, against his pre-trial detention in Moscow's Lefortovo prison, Reuters reported.

Since Gershkovich's arrest, US Ambassador to Russia Lynne Tracy has been allowed to visit him in prison only three times, most recently on August 14. The US has pledged to do "whatever it takes" to bring home Gershkovich and ex-Marine Paul Whelan, convicted of espionage in 2020.

"Once again, we call for Russia to immediately release Evan and also to release wrongfully detained U.S. citizen Paul Whelan. Our efforts to secure their release are ongoing," a State Department spokesperson told Reuters.

Russian court extends US journalist's pre-trial detention by three months

Russia said on Thursday that a prisoner swap involving Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich is only possible after he is put on trial. The reporter was detained in Russia late last month on espionage charges. "The question of exchanging anyone can be considered after the court delivers its verdict specifically on this or that charge," Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov was quoted as saying by the TASS news agency.

"As for an exchange, we have a special channel for this, the security services deal with it, and they will continue to deal with this matter," he said.

Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) says that Gershkovich was caught red-handed. Meanwhile, Kremlin has denied that President Vladimir Putin personally approved his arrest.

"No, it is not the president's prerogative, it is the special services', who are doing their job. Once again, I would like to remind you that this journalist was caught red-handed," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

The FSB has accused Gershkovich of gathering classified information about a military factory. Both WSJ and the United States have rejected the claim as false.&nbsp;

Being officially designated as "wrongfully detained" means that the US believes he was targeted primarily because he is an American citizen.&nbsp;

The White House and other Western countries have widely condemned the charges as bogus. The Wall Street Journal, dozens of media organisations and human rights groups have also slammed Russia for the arrest.
