Speaking about where New Delhi stands amid the US-China chip wars at the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) annual meeting, the Indian Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, on Wednesday (Jan 17) said that it is not a battle since there is enough for everyone and how the semiconductor industry will evolve in several ways.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Trust is our biggest capital’</h2>

In response to a question about how India will navigate through the&nbsp;chip war between the US and China, Vaishnaw said that the world has developed a certain trust in New Delhi because of how the country has conducted itself, in terms of economic and foreign policies, on the international stage.&nbsp;

“Trust is our biggest capital. That trust gels the entire world into a harmonious way,” said the IT minister during a roundtable discussion at the gathering of global leaders in Davos, Switzerland.&nbsp;

He also spoke about how India has signed agreements with several countries including the US, Japan and some countries in Europe on semiconductors, adding that New Delhi is also working with the South Korean government and companies.&nbsp;

“It’s like practically every company wants to collaborate with India in one way or another,” said Vaishnaw. He added, “So we don’t think it’s a battle, we think there is enough for everybody.”

The US restricts certain chip exports, to countries such as China, Iran and Russia in a bid to prevent the development of machine learning models that power Artificial Intelligence tools.

<h2>Industry will evolve and so will we: Vaishnaw</h2>

Speaking about how dynamic and ever-changing the semiconductor industry is, he said it is not easy to predict what changes will happen in the next 10 years. “It’s something which is too complex and too dynamic and too uncertain for anyone to bet that this is how the sector will be.”&nbsp;

He went on to give an example of how five years ago no one thought that 28-nanometre or 40-nanometre chips would not be viable anymore but the way that the electric vehicle industry has evolved, those “legacy nodes” have become important.&nbsp;

The IT minister also said that New Delhi’s “biggest priority” is on design and it is also the country’s strength given that we have around 300,000 design engineers who “practically” design every complex chip manufactured across the world and asserted that India&nbsp;is the right place to develop the semiconductor industry.&nbsp;

The mention of this illness has sparked a massive war of words on social media, with some users slamming the plans surrounding the hypothetical situation. What is Disease X? It is an illness caused by a currently unknown, yet serious microbial threat. The WHO added Disease X in 2017 to a list of pathogens deemed a top priority for research alongside Ebola and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). According to a report by Bloomberg on Monday, the vast reservoir of viruses circulating in wildlife is seen as a likely source of more such diseases due to their potential to spill over and infect other species, including humans. The significance of Disease X The WHO has said that the reason to study Disease X is to enable cross-cutting R&D (research and development) preparedness that is also relevant for an unknown disease. The global humanitarian crisis sparked by Ebola, Covid, and other diseases has been a wake-up call. The Ebola epidemic killed thousands of people globally. Bloomberg reported that despite decades of research, there were no products ready to deploy in time to save these lives. In response, the WHO created an R&D Blueprint to accelerate the development of a range of tools for “priority diseases". Which are the priority pathogens right now? The current list of priority diseases by the WHO includes - Covid, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, Ebola virus disease and Marburg virus disease, Lassa fever, Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) and SARS, Nipah and henipaviral diseases, Rift Valley fever, Zika and Disease X. Modi&#39;s agenda will involve networking with the world&#39;s best, including meeting Trump&#39;s business team.&nbsp;

Modi won&#39;t be turning up at Davos alone, he will be accompanied by a host of top ministers, including finance minister Arun Jaitley, Railway minister Suresh Prabhu, Commerce &amp; Industry minister Piyush Goyal, Petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan among others.

Modi&#39;s ministers are set to represent India in 25 sessions at Davos where they will share the PM&#39;s vision of transforming the country into a &quot;new India&quot; by 2022.

India&#39;s Chamber of Commerce and Industry(CII) will also chip in with roundtables with potential investors.

President Trump would be in Davos to promote&nbsp;&quot;America First&quot; as informed by the White House, Modi&#39;s pitch is expected to be similar. India needs more investment in virtually every sector, a fact pointed out by the World Bank.

India&#39;s pitch at Davos is likely to mirror Modi&#39;s campaign in the next 14 months in the run-up&nbsp;to the general elections in 2019. Post-demonisation, India&#39;s GDP has fallen and GST hasn&#39;t really taken off but the &quot;India story&quot; has resonated worldwide because of India&#39;s perceived stability and strong fundamentals, however, the road ahead could be rocky if India fails to get its act together, especially PM Modi.

It is time India moved away from merely being tagged as a &quot;potential&quot; growth engine considering the fact that next-door neighbour&nbsp;China is ready to replace the US in the growth story sweepstakes.

The Modi government&#39;s four-year report card has been poor on generating growth, the only sweet spot being stability and continuity in economic growth but the government has mainly played it safe, avoiding&nbsp;big bang reforms.

Experts would be looking very closely at Modi in&nbsp;Davos, his meeting with Trump might get the eyeballs but the real battle would be behind the scenes, in closed-door meetings aimed at boosting investment in India.
