<p>Michael Lang, a concert promoter who co-created the generation-defining Woodstock music festival, died Saturday aged 77, a family friend confirmed.</p>

<p>Lang died of a "rare form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma" at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital Cancer Center in New York, according to a statement from the family released by music executive Michael Pagnotta.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We are very sad to hear that legendary Woodstock icon and long time family friend Michael Lang has passed at 77 after a brief illness," Pagnotta said on Twitter, adding, "Rest In Peace."</p>

<p>Lang was only 24 when he helped organize the Woodstock festival in August 1969 in the Catskill Mountains of New York state.</p>

<p>The three-day affair brought together an unparalleled group of hugely popular rock and folk stars, including Joan Baez, Janis Joplin, The Who, Joe Cocker, Santana and Jimi Hendrix.</p>

<p>It drew more than 400,000 young people for an exuberant celebration of the 1960s' counterculture built around music, drugs and free love.</p>

<p>The festival -- with sporadic rain transforming the rolling hills of Max Yasgur's dairy farm into a sea of mud-covered hippies -- became a pivotal moment in rock history, immortalized in an eponymous Oscar-winning documentary (Lang makes repeated appearances) and in a song performed by Crosby, Stills, Nash &amp; Young.</p>

<p>Lang also produced two follow-up Woodstock festivals -- in 1994 and 1999 -- though they were less popular than the original. The 1999 version ended with a restless crowd looting, setting fires and vandalizing structures.</p>

<p>In 2019, Lang attempted to organize a 50th anniversary Woodstock sequel, but amid financial and logistical setbacks it was ultimately canceled.</p>

<p>The Bharatiya Janata Party today broke the alliance with Mehbooba Mufti-led Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The move has paralysed the state government making the<a href="http://wionews.com/india-news/bjp-pulls-out-of-alliance-with-pdp-in-kashmir-145468"> Governor's rule </a>imminent in case other parties don't extend support to the PDP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>BJP's general secretary Ram Madhav described "terrorism, violence and radicalisation" as the top reasons for the pullout.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Terrorism, violence and radicalisation have risen and fundamental rights of the citizens are under danger in the Valley. Shujaat Bukhari's killing is an example," he noted.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"This alliance was anti-national & unnatural. Our party chief had said, this alliance won't work out. Had they continued with it they would have had to answer in 2019 Lok Sabha election," stated Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut.&nbsp;</p>

<p>1. The BJP maintained that the PDP never responded to the assistance and funds granted by the centre.</p>

<p>2. The worsening state of law and order in the Valley is seen as another reason. According to reports, the Centre called for a ceasefire in the state during the month of Ramzan, a move pressed for by CM Mufti, terror activities increased during the period with the killing of senior journalist Shujaat Bukhari and the abduction and murder of Rifleman Aurangzeb as some of the key incidents to prove the same.&nbsp;</p>

<p>3. The BJP also stated increasing radicalisation and lack of development in the state as some of the key reasons for dissatisfaction with the alliance.</p>

<p>4. The Mufti government could not ensure freedom of speech in the state, Madhav stated.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>5. Ram Madhav also mentioned the increasing ideological differences between the two parties.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>What's next?</strong></p>

<p>Jammu and Kashmir now heads for more than a couple of possibilities in days to come. CM Mehbooba Mufti has served her resignation and called for an emergency meeting at 4pm today after which she briefed the media stating that the BJP has betrayed the alliance by pulling out.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the Congress has clearly ruled out any possibility of an alliance with the PDP.</p>

<p>"Whatever has happened is good. People of J&K will get some relief. They (BJP) ruined Kashmir & have now pulled out, maximum number of civilian and army men died during these 3 years. That question does not arise (on forming alliance with PDP)," Senior Congress leader, Ghulam Nabi Azad noted.</p>

<p>Jammu and Kashmir National Conference's Omar Abdullah announced that he won't back the PDP. According to reports, he met Governor NN Vohra in Srinagar earlier today.</p>
