“Just happy to be here. It has been well documented that we haven't come this far in the last two WCs. Just woke up this morning grateful to be here,” the Player of the Match, Beth Mooney, said after the match. Australia beat England for the fourth time in the Women’s T20 World Cup final, ending England’s unbeaten streak of winning an ICC final on their home soil, including three Women’s ODI World Cup and one T20I World Cup final. For the hosts, captain Nat Sciver-Brunt starred with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 58 off just 53 balls. Bowling all-rounder Freya Kemp’s late blitz (44* off 28 balls) helped England touch the 150-mark in the first innings. Also read| Babar Azam returns as Pakistan Test captain for England, West Indies tours; Shaheen dropped Australian captain Sophie Molineux won the toss and elected to bowl first. That decision was decisive as they reduced England to 67 for three inside 10 overs, putting the brakes on their scoring rate. The two top-scorers did their jobs in the second half of the innings, but that wasn’t enough, as it took Australia just 17.1 overs to complete the run chase and put their hands on this coveted trophy once again.
History at Lord’s and for Australia
Be it their men’s team or women’s team, Australia rule ICC events like none other. While the men’s team has the most ODI World Cups to its name (six), the women’s team have gone a step further by bagging their seventh Women’s T20 crown. Chasing a modest total at Lord’s, Australia lost opener Georgia Voll inside the second over, but that worked in their favour, as Mooney and Litchfield added 100 for the second wicket from there on. That partnership, more or less, did the job for the mighty queens, as they won the match with 17 balls and seven wickets to spare. “So special, if you would have said at the start of the month that we will be winners, it would have been great. [Chase] We wanted to throw the first punch, and we wanted to get the run rate down to six an under. Moons took the pressure off me. Such a cool feeling to win. [Celebrations] Will be led by the captain. Thanks to the Aussie fans in the crowd, we could hear you,” Litchfield said.
