Scientists are expected to explore those and other fundamental questions about the universe when they peer deep into the night sky using a new telescope planned for the summit of Hawaii's tallest mountain. But the Thirty Meter Telescope is a decade away from being built. And Native Hawaiian protesters have tried to thwart the start of construction by blocking a road to the mountain. They say installing yet another observatory on Mauna Kea's peak would further defile a place they consider sacred. The large size of the telescope's mirror means it would collect more light, allowing it to see faint, far-away objects such as stars and galaxies dating back as long as 13 billion years. Hundreds of demonstrators are gathered at the base of Hawaii's tallest mountain to protest the construction of a giant telescope on land that some Native Hawaiians consider sacred. Groups of activists sang and prayed at the base of the mountain on Sunday afternoon. They declared the area, which is well off the highway at the intersection of the mountain's access road, a place of refuge and safety.

Afghanistan's President Ashraf Ghani formally launched his re-election campaign on Sunday (July 28), stressing peace and good governance as his top priorities. Addressing supporters at a large gathering in Kabul, Ghani outlined his aims to improve security, implement the rule of law, improve transport infrastructure, hospitals and mosques if he were to serve for another five years. Several former officials and politicians, including former warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, are lining up to challenge Ghani who formed a unity government with his main rival Abdullah Abdullah after a bitterly disputed 2014 election marred by concerns over voter fraud. The presidential election, scheduled for September 28, has been postponed twice due to a lack of preparation and could be overshadowed by ongoing peace efforts with the Taliban.

Dan Coats, the spy chief who has clashed with U.S. President Donald Trump over-assessments involving Russia, Iran, and North Korea, plans to step down soon, a source familiar with the matter said on Sunday. A person with direct knowledge of that matter told Reuters that Coats advised Trump last week that he planned to step down fairly soon as director of national intelligence. He offered the president some thoughts on who might succeed him, the source said. The New York Times, citing people familiar with the matter, reported the departure was expected "in the coming days." Coats' office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The head of a Sudanese investigative committee said on Saturday (July 27) that 87 people were killed and 168 wounded security forces broke up a sit-in protest on June 3. Fath al-Rahman Saeed, the head of the committee, said 17 of those killed were in the square occupied by protesters and 48 of the wounded were hit by bullets. Saeed said some members of the security forces fired live ammunition at protesters in Khartoum who were demanding the military cede power. He added three officers violated orders by moving forces into the sit-in. He also said the order was issued to whip protesters. The committee's findings put the death toll higher than the Health Ministry's previous estimate of 61. But opposition medics have said 127 people were killed and 400 people wounded. Reflecting anger at the findings, dozens of protesters chanted slogans against the committee in Khartoum's Burri district and burned tires in the street, witnesses said.

A group of Iranians living in the United Kingdom rallied in central London on Saturday (July 27) calling for tougher sanctions against the Iranian regime. Several hundred demonstrators protested, waved signs and flags and chanted in Trafalgar Square. The National Council of Resistance of Iran group, which organized the demonstration, is calling for the UK to take on a tougher stance as tensions between the West and Iran continue to grow. The group also called on the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and the Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei's office to be listed as terrorist entities by the United Kingdom, a press release stated. Member of Parliament for Hendon, Matthew Offord, who attended the rally said he was using it as an opportunity to send a message to new British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
