All of us have our own unique ways of celebrating our birthdays. Some prefer to keep it under wraps, while others can barely hide the excitement.

The presents from friends and family take the birthday frenzy to a whole new level.

But, have you ever given a birthday present to your own self? We bet it cannot even be half as unique and awe-inspiring as what England's Ray Matthews gifted himself.

75-year old Ray Matthews, who hails from South Yorkshire's Rotherham, has run 75 marathons in 75 days. Matthews, a superfit grandfather of three, began this mammoth challenge on July 2 as a birthday present to himself.

The reason behind his decision to run these marathons is what makes it even more beautiful and special. He took up the challenge in a bid to raise £75,000 for a school which works for a range of special educational needs of children with disabilities.

The success did not come easy to the retired boxer. He had to consume at least 6,000 calories a day in order to keep going. There were instances which tested his drive, but, he refused to give up.

Matthews was extremely disappointed when the social media networking website 'Facebook' deemed his target 'unrealistic' and rejected the advertisement put up by his friend for this effort. This rejection, however, gave Matthews a rejuvenated sense of motivation to achieve the target set by him.

Matthews completed the marathon challenge on September 14 at the school grounds to the cheers of believers and supporters.

10 destinations that may vanish due to climate change

With huge online security threats doing the rounds and the problem of simplistic passwords growing, everyone is on the hunt for a one-stop solution.

Everykey addresses this issue of security gap and claims to make your lives a whole lot convenient. It is a bluetooth device which can lock or unlock your phone, laptop, tablet, house door and car door. Everykey generates secure passwords for your website accounts, then automatically logs you in when you visit a website.

WION Edge interviewed the chief communications officer of Everykey, Daniel Thomas, to understand more about the technology used. Excerpts:

What was the trigger point behind the making of Everykey?
In an entrepreneurship class at Case Western Reserve University, the founder Chris Wentz, and a group of classmates were given the task of recognising a major point of pain in the society. They decided that getting locked out of your door along with forgetting passwords for devices and accounts were major issues they wished could be solved. This compelled them to come up with the idea for Everykey.
If you had to mention the best feature of your product, which one would it be?
It depends on what the person finds more of a pain point in their life, whether that be getting into physical devices or online accounts.

What is the selling price of your product?
We are currently selling Everykey starting at $99 off our website. The price could change, though, as we are finding the ideal price point.

Which market do you think the product appeals to today? What would be your market choice to loop in further?
We currently appeal to techies in the age range of early twenties to early forties. We feel that Everykey can benefit everyone. We hope to reach a wider audience as it becomes more widespread.

What if someone loses the Everykey? How secure is it?
We have developed an extremely secure system for Everykey including the utilisation of AES-128 Bit Encryption. If someone loses their Everykey, they can remotely freeze it so that no one else can use it.

Is there going to be a next generation? What features will you add to it?
Yes, we intend on creating other generations of Everykey. It is possible that we will incorporate biometrics with our next generation of Everykey products.

Are there any plans for McAfee antivirus and Everykey to collaborate in the near future?
I can’t comment on that now, but anything is possible.
Interview: A master key for your phone, online accounts and door lock

GadgetFlow is a product discovery platform, which helps you find products online in one place. It was founded in 2012 with an aim to simplify online product exploration.

The platform adds 10 new products every day to their website, allowing customers to discover, save and buy them.

WION Edge interviewed Evan Varsamis, the founder & CEO of GadgetFlow, to understand more about the way this platform functions. Excerpts:

What was the inspiration behind launching GadgetFlow?
Everything started in an apartment in 2012, not in a garage like many startup stories do. Three friends, all aged 21, were working on a design inspiration blog and curating content for designers and artists. They were publishing new content almost every day and the blog was generating a few thousand dollars every month just from sponsored posts and banner advertising. It was a way for them to stay creative and it also brought in some revenue.

What is the X-factor behind 10 new innovative products you feature every day?
Our goal is to simplify online product exploration. Therefore, we've been publishing 10 new curated products by our team every day including weekends and holidays. People appreciate the time we spend finding the best products from the web and showcase them under one roof because when they want to purchase something new, either for personal use or a gift, they visit our platform and they can easily find hundreds of interesting and unique products.

Can people buy the products listed on your website or are they crowdfunded?
We don't sell them directly. We simply showcase the products we list on our platform. To purchase them, customers will have to click ‘buy now’ and get redirected to the seller's website. It can be a marketplace listing such as ETSY or Amazon or even an e-commerce website or crowdfunding project.

In picture: Evan Varsamis

Do you use and recommend the products listed on your website or are they simply curated from the web?
We do have our recommended list which is included under the ‘favorite picks of the week’.

What is the most innovative product ever recommended on your website?
There’s no particular product, there are hundreds of them. We have many products which gave us 1,50,000 pins or 1,00,000 shares on Facebook.

Do you have a separate product review category catered to specific groups like women?
Yes, we have over 140 categories and sub-categories.

What's the next stage of growth?
We are planning to launch our subscription box later this year. We are also planning to start selling some of the products you see on our platform directly at a competitive price.

Have you thought of selling these products through your website directly? In either case, why or why not?
It was hard in the beginning because we were still trying to figure out our position in the market. Now that we have it, it just makes sense to start selling the products directly instead of redirecting our users outside our platform.

What's unique about how you curate these products?
Quality, presentation and the fact that it’s not easy to find them outside of our platform. We obviously feature some popular products such as the latest sony HD projector but the idea behind 99 per cent of the products we showcase is that it is almost impossible to find them yourself without deep research.
In picture: Evan Varsamis Do you use and recommend the products listed on your website or are they simply curated from the web? Objective of protest: To end racial segregation in public transit system.

Method adopted: On December 1, 1955, an African-American woman named Rosa Parks refused to give her seat to a white man in Alabama. During that time, the African-Americans were allowed to sit only on the latter half of the bus seats as per law, while the seats on the front half were reserved for whites. Hence, this incident led to the arrest of Parks, which sparked off a 13-month long mass protest in the form of Montgomery (Alabama) bus boycott against the racial segregation policy.
A Belgian non-profit organisation, Apopo, has discovered that giant pouched rats are capable of detecting landmines and tuberculosis. The NGO is, therefore, training these rats to sniff out landmines and tuberculosis in Tanzania as part of a project which could one day use the rodents to diagnose cancer.
Finding the hidden explosives is dangerous for people. What makes these giant African rats the perfect candidates for detecting the land mines is the extraordinary sense of smell that they posses and their light weight, which enables them to walk over the landmines without setting them off.
Rio Paralympics 2016, a major international multi-sporting event for people with disabilities, kicked off with a spectacular opening ceremony on September 7 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The ceremony played true to its event's meaning as American Aaron "Wheelz" Fotheringham, a wheelchair athlete, jumped from a massive ramp from the Maracana stands and performed a back flip through a giant ring. DONT PUBLISH. CHANGES REQUIRED

Cant be used with World Literacy Day tag. It's not World Literature Day. But it's a good idea. One we can put together as a list for weekend reading every week.

Take out the names in the images. May be each person suggesting a book can give a para on why they like this book. And it should be about the book, their personal impressions of it, and if possible, what difference it made to their lives (Books can change lives, give shape and sense to the muddle of our thoughts).

The names should be carried with correct designations in the captions.
"I think stories can grow out of the visual. It can be an engine for literacy" ? Chris Riddell, illustrator

DONT PUBLISH. CHANGES REQUIRED Cant be used with World Literacy Day tag. Anuradha TEXT starts As the world celebrates the 50th International Literacy Day under the banner “Reading the Past, Writing the Future”, here's a sneak peek into what WION loves to read. 1. The Bell Jar Why you shouldn’t miss it: I read this book because someone told me that this is a book that every modern woman must read. 2. Angela's Ashes Why you shouldn’t miss it: It’s a riveting read that takes you from Brooklyn, New York to Limerick, Ireland, all through the perspective of a young Catholic boy grappling with poverty, religion and a complicated family dynamic. 3. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night time Why you shouldn’t miss it: The book is written from the point of view of an autistic boy, Christopher, who sets out to investigate the death of a dog that he discovers in his home's backyard. The book is heartbreakingly tender and realistic without being overly cute. Also, there are illustrations and diagrams which make the read all the more compelling. 4. West of Kabul, East of New York Why you shouldn’t miss it: This book gives one a great sense of the culture of the east and the west. It’s a marriage of the two worlds. 5. Blindness Why you shouldn’t miss it: Every time you read this book, there will be a different facet to discover. The metaphors and non-conformative narrative set this novel apart. 6. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society? Why you shouldn’t miss it: It is difficult to explain this book. It’s an experience which leaves one searching for something similar. 7. Neapolitan Novels Why you shouldn’t miss it: It is a series of four books that takes you through the historical journey starting from second world war through intense human experiences. 8. Murakami Why you shouldn’t miss it: Fascinating modern day author, riveting content and dynamic characters are enough to keep you hooked to the book. 9. The Forty Rules of Love Why you shouldn’t miss it: The book talks of the platonic relationship between the famous Sufi poet Rumi and a darvesh called Shams of Tabraiz. It chronicles the journey of Rumi giving up his life as a renowned Islamic scholar and becoming a mystical poet, influenced by the company of Tabraiz. 10. The Cinderella Complex Why you shouldn’t miss it: It's a book every girl/woman should read. This book talks about the dependency and unrealistic expectations girls develop living in this world.
