The 47-year-old man who died was later identified as Bryan Niedert, while the identity of the two teenagers, his 14-year-old son and 18-year-old daughter, who were injured was not known.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per media reports, the two teenagers suffered shrapnel wounds and were taken to the hospital. However, their condition was not immediately known. Erik Longnecker of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in a statement said that they are supporting the Lake County Sheriff’s office and Porter County Bomb Squad in the investigation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A bomb squad was called to their house where the explosion took place to check if any other explosives were at the house. While such incidents are not common in the US, they&nbsp;are not entirely unheard of. In 2020, a 12-year-old in Virginia died after what is believed to be a WW II-era hand grenade bought at a local flea market exploded.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Such incidents also prompted the FBI to issue a statement which said that some families of war veterans in the US are finding “unexpected, and highly dangerous souvenirs” among their loved one’s belongings which service members either brought home from their combat service or purchased them later.</p>

<p>It added that these devices are known as military ordnance and can remain intact for decades but explode without notice and also warned that they are “highly dangerous, and only a trained bomb technician should handle them.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The federal agency also noted that there has been an increase in the number of calls they are receiving about such devices as large numbers of elderly veterans are now dying.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Special Agent Patrick Carolan, a bomb technician with the FBI, said, “People are often a little shocked and concerned to realise that they or their loved ones have been living with such a dangerous item in their home, sometimes for decades.”<br />

<p>"I am deeply troubled by the appointment of Lieutenant-General Shavendra Silva as Commander of the Sri Lankan Army, despite the serious allegations of gross violations of international human rights and humanitarian law against him and his troops during the war,” UN&nbsp;High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said in a statement on Monday.</p>

<p>His promotion "severely compromises Sri Lanka’s commitment to promoting justice and accountability", she said, adding that it also set back security sector reform.</p>

<p>Washington expressed its disapproval of Silva's appointment in a strongly-worded statement.</p>

<p>"The allegations of gross human rights violations against him, documented by the United Nations and other organizations, are serious and credible," the US Embassy in Colombo said in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"This appointment undermines Sri Lanka's international reputation and its commitments to promote justice and accountability, especially at a time when the need for reconciliation and social unity is paramount."</p>

<p>Silva was named head of the army after the previous chief Mahesh Senanayake's term ended on Sunday.</p>

<p>His appointment demonstrates a disregard for human rights, said civil society groups including the Centre for Policy Alternatives.</p>

<p>The Sri Lankan President's office and the military media unit did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the criticism.</p>

<p>United States President Donald Trump joined Americans in paying tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives while serving in the military services. However, the president's twitter wishes did not go very well with the war veterans and sparked an outcry on social media.</p>

<p>Donald Trump tweeted stating that dead veterans would be happy and proud "at how well our country is doing today".</p>

<p>Trump wrote, "Happy Memorial Day! Those who died for our great country would be very happy and proud at how well our country is doing today. Best economy in decades, lowest unemployment numbers for Blacks and Hispanics EVER (& women in 18years), rebuilding our Military and so much more. Nice!"</p>

<p>The veterans slammed the president and called his tweet the "most inappropriate" memorial day comment ever made by an American president.</p>

<p>"This is the most inappropriate #MemorialDay comment that a @POTUS has ever made. Self-promotion on a day to remember the fallen, and wishing those remembering their deceased loved ones a “happy” holiday is appalling. #CadetBoneSpurs," noted&nbsp;a group of war veterans.</p>

<p>The group was also furious at the Republican Party's effort to&nbsp;raise funds on Memorial Day by offering a 25 per cent discount on official Trump campaign merchandise.</p>

<p>"Really @GOP? You think this is what’s #MemorialDay is all about. Maybe you can #TakeAKnee and remember the fallen", the group tweeted in response to the Republican party's Memorial Day deal.</p>

<p>Several others, including family members of soldiers and veterans, expressed their anger on Twitter.</p>
