Elon Musk has sounded the alarm on America's rising national debt. At a recent All-In summit hosted by the 'All-In Podcast,' the billionaire, who recently became the first person to boast 200 million followers on his social media platform X, warned, "America is going bankrupt extremely quickly, and everyone seems to be sort of whistling past the graveyard on this one."

Musk has been vocal about America's economic challenges. The concerns centre around the nation's rising national debt and interest payments. Musk shared a headline in July that read, "Interest payments on US national debt will shatter trillions this year, eating 76 per cent of all income taxes collected." Musk added, "America is going bankrupt btw."

According to Musk, the trillion dollars added to debt will pass through generations, forcing the kids and grandkids to pay the debt owed by the current government.

This begs the question: Can a country really go bankrupt? The answer is complicated since a federal government cannot file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Congress eventually has to decide to let the government default on its debt, or it can keep borrowing.

Many economists worry about uncontrolled inflation if the government continues to print money to meet its demands. The nonpartisan Peter G. Peterson Foundation claims that growing debt has an impact on the economy in several ways, including less confidence in the government's ability to repay debt, which would discourage private investment, and higher expenditure on interest payments that results in less money being invested in public infrastructure and economic growth.

Meanwhile, Republican nominee Donald Trump endorsed Elon Musk as the 'cost-cutter' in his cabinet. However, Trump acknowledged that Musk wouldn't be available for the full-time role.

Is the US going bankrupt? Elon Musk raises alarms on rising national debt

The threat of foreign interference in the US election will spike during the last two days of the presidential campaign, said Microsoft Corp. President Brad Smith, according to a report by Bloomberg.

“The most perilous moment will come, I think, 48 hours before the election,” Smith told the Senate Intelligence Committee on Wednesday.

That was the "lesson to be learned," Smith said, referring to the Slovakian election last fall, when fake audio of one of the top candidates circulated online days before the election.

Foreign actors already have been spreading manipulated videos and false posts to sow discord around the US presidential election, Smith and other executives with the country's largest tech companies testified.

Smith said that earlier on Wednesday, Microsoft identified an "AI-enhanced" video from a Russian group showing Vice President Kamala Harris saying words she didn't say at a recent rally.

Groups from adversarial nations, including Russia, China and Iran, have spread false information and news reports about both Harris and Donald Trump's campaigns, the executives said.

The hearing took testimony from Smith, Alphabet Inc. parent Google's president and chief legal officer Kent Walker, and Nick Clegg, the president of global affairs at Meta Platforms Inc.

New developments in artificial intelligence are shaping those attacks, Walker said.

“We are seeing some foreign state actors experimenting with generative AI to improve existing cyber attacks, like probing for vulnerabilities or creating spear phishing emails,” Walker said. “We see generative AI being used to more efficiently create fake websites, misleading news articles and robot social media posts.”

The Senate Intelligence Committee hearing focused on foreign interference in US elections, which follows a recent Microsoft report saying the Russian effort to influence the US election has now turned to smear Harris with doctored and misleading videos. Meta said on Tuesday it would ban the Russian state media outlet Russia Today from its services over "foreign interference.".

The Biden administration and America's leading tech companies stopped talking to each other about risks online to US elections as they waited for a decision in Murthy v. Missouri, a case centred on whether it is constitutional for government officials to request social media companies to take down certain posts.

In June, the US Supreme Court opened the gates for the Biden administration to communicate freely with social media companies, and an election-year ruling strengthened the government's ability to seek removal of what officials see as misinformation. The justices, voting 6-3, tossed out court-imposed restrictions on contacts by the White House and several federal agencies.

Mark Warner, the Democrat senator of Virginia and chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, several times voiced frustration over the refusal of Elon Musk's X Corp. to send a representative to testify before the committee.

Microsoft executive raises alarm over potential election interference in final 48 hours

A new poll from Fairleigh Dickinson University discloses that 1 in 7 voters in the US have put money into crypto, and these crypto investors are more inclined to vote for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump than Kamala Harris.

The survey canvassed a national list of over 800 registered voters from August 17 to 20. Participants were asked if they had ever invested in crypto or non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and if they’ve ever traded stocks, options, or crypto on Robinhood or E*Trade.

As per the survey, crypto holders are 50 per cent more inclined to back Trump, while just 38 per cent are likely to cast their vote for Harris.

“Trump has been reaching out to the crypto community, and it seems to have paid off,” Dan Cassino, the executive director of the poll at FDU, said.

“It might be easy to dismiss them as insignificant, but I don’t think people realise exactly how widespread crypto ownership is,” he added.

Crypto owners now represent 50 million Americans, making them a crucial segment of the electorate. Candidates are mindful of their increasing political influence, with Trump wooing crypto voters at a recent Bitcoin conference in Nashville, Tennessee. On stage, Trump vowed to create a strategic bitcoin reserve and free Ross Ulbricht, who is currently imprisoned for his role as the founder of the drug marketplace Silk Road.

However, non-crypto holders surveyed by FDU strongly favour Harris. These respondents show 53 per cent support for Harris compared to only 41 per cent for Trump, showing a 12-point lead for Harris.

“The ideology underlying crypto is based on distrust of existing power structures, and that makes it a reasonable fit for Trump,” said Cassino about the results.

“The fact that crypto owners aren’t conservatives or liberals or MAGA voters means that they’re up for grabs, and in an election that’s expected to be close, they’re too big a group to ignore.”

The data also showed that Republicans scored higher (18 per cent) than Democrats (11 per cent) in terms of their crypto ownership.

Survey finds crypto investors favour Trump over Harris

Republican presidential candidate and ex-US president Donald Trump in a press conference recounted his scary experience of nearly dying in an alleged helicopter crash, where he claimed he was travelling with former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown. Trump made these claims in response to a question about the relations between Brown and Democratic presidential hopeful and Vice President Kamala Harris.

“I know Willie Brown very well. In fact, I went down in a helicopter with him. We thought maybe this is the end. We were in a helicopter going to a certain location together, and there was an emergency landing,” Trump told reporters gathered at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

“This was not a pleasant landing, and Willie was, he was a little concerned. So I know him, I know him pretty well. I mean, I haven’t seen him in years,” Trump went on. "I went down in a helicopter with him. We thought maybe this is the end,” the ex-president claimed.

However, California Governor Gavin Newsom, who also toured the wildfires with Trump and Jerry Brown in a helicopter, claimed the helicopter never went down.

“I guess we all look alike,” he added.

‘My helicopter went down,’ Trump recounts scary crash that ‘never happened’

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has narrowed her search for a vice presidential running mate to two finalists, Governors Tim Walz of Minnesota and Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, three sources with knowledge of the matter said.

Who will Kamala Harris choose as her Vice President?

US Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday (Aug 6) reportedly chose Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate ahead of the 2024 presidential elections. Walz has served over a decade in Congress and is currently in his second term as the governor.

More about Tim Walz

The 60-year-old Democrat was born and raised in Nebraska. He has served as a teacher in China as well as in Mankato, Minnesota. He advocated gay rights long before the Democrats took up the agenda at the national level.

People describe him as an individual who talks like ordinary, normal people, something that could help his party win over rural, white voters. He entered politics as a member of former Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign.

In 2006, Walz orchestrated a major upset in the Republican-leaning congressional district southern Minnesota district, and kept it until 2016. Two years later, he ran for governor and emerged victorious.

Key policies

As governor, he has championed policies like tuition-free meals at participating state universities, enshrining abortion rights into state law, banning conversion therapy, and providing protections for gender-affirming healthcare.

While reacting to a Republican opponent earlier this month, Walz jokingly said, “What a monster! Kids are eating and having full bellies so they can go learn and women are making their own healthcare decisions.”

Controversial position on gun control

His views on gun control are opposed by progressives in Minnesota. He himself is a gun owner and a hunter, and previously received endorsements from the National Rifle Association and had an A rating from the group.

But in the past few years, he appears to have shifted his position. Following the Las Vegas shooting in 2017, he wired the donations from the NRA to charity.

He also backed a weapon ban in 2018 after a school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

Some drawbacks

Republicans are expected to target Walz over the 2020 George Floyd protests by tying him to the violence in the aftermath.

Geography is another drawback for him, as Minnesota is already a Democratic state. So, Walz’s name as Kamala’s VP may not necessarily further boost the party’s winning prospects in the state.

VP Kamala Harris has gained enough support from party delegates to become the official Democratic presidential nominee ahead of the November elections. A survey by the news agency AP revealed that she now has the backing of 2,538 delegates, well beyond the 1,976 needed. Now, the next million-dollar question is: Who will be the VP's VP pick? Here we look at the leading contenders: 1) Mark Kelly - US Senator from Arizona, 60 Kelly is a former astronaut and a Navy veteran. He is well known for his gun control measures. He rose to fame after his wife survived an assassination attempt. He is seen as a potential candidate who could woo white women and young Latino voters. 2) Josh Shapiro - Governor of Pennsylvania state, 51 The Pennsylvania governor is quite popular among Democrats, having secured a landslide victory in 2022. His leadership skills were tested with the handling of the I-95 bridge collapse. Shapiro, an observant Conservative Jew, is considered to be a crisis manager, and his condemnation of rising antisemitism is another significant plus. 3) Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, 46 He has survived a predominantly Republican state two consecutive times. He was first elected in 2019 and then cemented his leadership in 2023 as well. He could appeal to moderate white voters. He was praised for leadership during deadly tornadoes and other severe weather incidents. 4) Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, 52 The 52-year-old has served as a governor since 2019. She has emphasised abortion rights and won re-election in the battleground state by double digits. If she makes it, we would have the first major party all-female ticket in US history. (With inputs from agencies)
