US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida touted increased joint military cooperation and a new missile defence system on Wednesday, strengthening their alliance with an eye on aggressive actions by China and Russia.

"This is the most significant upgrade in our alliance since it was first established," Biden said at a joint White House news conference with Kishida, after about two hours of talks that focused on the restive Indo-Pacific region, Ukraine and the Gaza conflict.

Kishida said the two leaders also discussed tense relations between Taiwan and China, and pledged to uphold international order based on the rule of law.

“Unilateral attempts to change status quo by force or coercion is absolutely unacceptable, wherever it may be,” Kishida said. The US and Japan will continue to respond to such actions, including challenges from China, he said.

“Regarding Russia’s aggression of Ukraine... Ukraine today may be East Asia tomorrow,” Kishida said.

The announcements from Biden and Kishida brought the two old World War II enemies into the closest collaboration they have had since they became allies decades ago.

Biden said their militaries will cooperate with a joint command structure and they will, together with Australia, develop a new air missile defence network. The two leaders also announced that Japanese astronauts will participate in NASA moon missions.

Japan, often described as the US's most important Asia ally and its largest source of foreign direct investment, is taking on a stepped-up global role after a series of security law changes in the past decade that have transformed its pacifist constitution.

In a chilling Revelation the FBI director is set to inform a house panel about the bureau's growing concern over the possibility of a coordinated terror attack in the United States. Watch in for more details!

US: FBI Chief warns of 'elevated' public, national safety; pushes for increased funding

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has expressed concerns over the likelihood of a potent coordinated assault in the United States that can be similar to the attack that claimed the lives of thousands at a Russian concert hall in March. The director of the FBI plans to inform a House of Representatives panel on the issue on Thursday (Apr 11).

“Looking back over my career in law enforcement, I’d be hard-pressed to think of a time where so many threats to our public safety and national security were so elevated all at once,” Christopher Wray is set to tell lawmakers during a budget hearing. “But that is the case as I sit here today.”

The targeted attack on a concert hall in Russia's Moscow on March 22, which claimed the lives of at least 144 people, is said to be the country's deadliest assault ever in nearly two decades.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has put the blame on Ukraine for the attack without citing evidence. However, a branch of the Islamic State terror group claimed the responsibility of the massacre.

United States officials are concerned about the risk of a potential attack by an individual or a small group influenced by the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Wray is expected to testify before the panel.

Of increasing concern "is the potential for a coordinated attack here in the homeland, akin to the ISIS-K attack we saw at the Russia Concert Hall a couple of weeks ago,” is what Wray is expected to tell a House of Representatives panel, according to news agency Reuters.

Wray also intends to push lawmakers to revive an American surveillance program, that is set to expire in April, dubbing it as an integral tool to combat US adversaries.

Members of both parties blocked a modest overhaul of the program in the House on Wednesday (Apr 10) stating concerns that it did not go far enough in limiting the government's surveillance powers.

“It’s critical in securing our nation, and we’re in crunch time,” Wray plans to tell lawmakers.

The top court in the US state of Arizona, on Tuesday (Apr 9) ruled that the state can enforce its long-dormant 19th-century law that criminalises nearly all abortions. The ruling marks yet another setback for reproductive rights in the state where abortion was already banned starting at 15 weeks of pregnancy.

Arizona top court’s ruling

The 1864 law provides no exceptions for rape or incest and bans abortion in virtually all instances, except when a mother’s life is at stake. The Arizona Supreme Court ruled in favour of the law by a 4-2 majority.

The decision came after reviewing a 2022 decision by the state Court of Appeals which said doctors couldn’t be charged for performing the procedure in the first 15 weeks of pregnancy.

The ruling was also in favour of an anti-abortion obstetrician Eric Hazelrigg and Republican Yavapai County Attorney Dennis McGrane who took up the defence of the law after Arizona’s attorney general had declined to do so.

Notably, the fight to enforce the 19th-century law has been going on for years, but it was blocked after the US Supreme Court issued the 1973 landmark Roe v Wade ruling which guaranteed a constitutional right to an abortion.

However, in June 2022, the SCOTUS overturned the ruling which has led many Republican states to enforce new bans or restrictions on abortion.

Weeks after Roe v Wade was overturned, then-Republican Attorney General Mark Brnovich filed a motion to challenge the Planned Parenthood case which had sued the state in 1971 and won.

It is also worth noting that the law that the state’s top court has revived was enacted in 1864 before Arizona even became a US state.

The state would now not only be allowed to ban nearly all abortions but also impose a penalty of up to five years in prison on anyone who performs or helps a woman to get the medical procedure, in line with 19th-century law.

Notably, 14 out of the 50 US states are currently enforcing bans on abortion at all stages of pregnancy with some exceptions.

‘A stain on our state’

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, a Democrat, called the ruling “unconscionable and an affront to freedom,” and said that she would not prosecute any doctor or woman under the “draconian law,” while in her position.

“Today’s decision to reimpose a law from a time when Arizona wasn’t a state, the Civil War was raging, and women couldn’t even vote will go down in history as a stain on our state,” she added.

However, pro-choice activists are not going down without a fight. Last week, abortion rights advocates said that they had gathered enough signatures that would allow voters in November to vote on a measure which would enshrine a right to an abortion until fetal viability, in the state’s constitution.

A flight heading to Seattle, USA, had to change course to Dallas because a dog defecated in the plane's aisle. This happened during a United Airlines flight departing from Houston on Friday (April 5).

A Reddit user, gig_wizard, shared a picture of the mess on the flight on the social media platform. "Dog had messy accident in the aisle right in first class. Plane diverted to DFW. Ground crew spent over 2 hours cleaning carpets with paper towels," the user said. The incident was later confirmed by the airlines to Business Insider.

"Smell made me ill. Gate agents kept yelling at passengers and the cabin crew. The smell never quite went away. First class toilet declared unusable as the dog mess was apparently unresolved in there. Food went bad while on the ground so very few snacks left," the post continued.

As per the United Airlines website, pets are allowed on domestic flights if they can fit in a container beneath the seat and stay put throughout the journey. The post got significant attention from social media users since it was shared.

We were delayed by 15 minutes getting off the plane as they had to clean it up. Kudos to the dog for holding it together," said a user.

"This was obviously not a small, lap-sized dog," commented a person.

A third user said, "I love my dogs and generally prefer dogs to people. That said, I am a firm believer that the only time a dog should be on a plane is when the owner is moving, and driving is not an option."

"And this is why dogs do not belong out in the open in public areas. You want to fly with your dog, put it in the carrier and keep it in the carrier from the minute you get to the airport until you get to your destination," another argued.

"I'm sorry but I flew for years without people bringing their pets on board. It's time to reverse this. If you can't fly without a pet don't fly. Take the bus," said a person.

A man in California, United States is suing women and has filed more than 50 cases against them after they reportedly called him a bad date on a viral Facebook page called “Are We Dating The Same Guy.”

What we know about the case

Stewart Lucas Murrey from the city of Santa Monica said that he has filed the lawsuit seeking damages amounting to $2.6 million for defamation and sex-based discrimination as well as “emotional distress and pain and suffering”.

The Facebook group Are We Dating The Same Guy? Los Angeles is a private group on Facebook and has nearly 54,000 members.

On his GoFundMe page, Murrey has claimed that at least 238 Facebook accounts were involved in “harming” him for over a year.

“Some of their acts included posting my pictures without my permission, tracking my whereabouts, conspiring to harass me, fabricating entire stories, and sensationalizing their unremarkable interactions with me,” he wrote.

Murrey also claimed that he had never met some of these women and “ever really saw” their faces on TV as they were talking about him in a press release.

“I support a safe space for women to protect themselves against being stalked, harassed or harmed, and not the other way around. These women exploited the concept of a safe space to gossip, defame and cyberbully anyone at whim,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, the women sued said Murrey was using legal action to intimidate them. One of the women, Kelly Gibbons, said that the first time she met him in real life was when he came to her house to drop off the lawsuit.

“My heart started pounding, as I thought, this man knows where I live,” Gibbons told the Times of London. She added, “It was pretty eerie. He was filming with his cellphone, walking in. I don’t know who wouldn’t get creeped out by that.”

Last month, some of the women who were sued by Murrey held a press conference and said they were “just speaking their truth and, unfortunately for him, it was not favourable.”

The women, who have also created a GoFundMe page, said that they are coming together to “share truthful accounts of our personal experiences” as well as “valid concerns pertaining to the plaintiff’s unsettling behaviour and background, all of which is public information.”

On their page, they also said that Murrey “poses a legitimate danger to the women of Los Angeles.”

“Our negative interactions with him have spanned years. We plan to finally put an end to his harassing ways once and for all,” they added.

Earlier this week, the residents of San Francisco, California were met with a usual sight, when a massive two-storey houseboat with a white picket fence and all was seen being towed across the bay.

This came after the residents of one of the biggest houseboats were among those who lost a years-long legal battle against Redwood City, a suburb south of San Francisco.

Rare sighting

While Californians turned to the sky to watch the solar eclipse, on Monday (Apr 8), they might have missed the precarious journey of the two-storey houseboat from the Redwood City marina to the city of San Rafael.

“It’s precarious,” Edward Stancil, who said he was the last remaining resident of Docktown Marina in Redwood City, told the San Francisco Standard.

Speaking about the two-storey houseboat, he added, “The thing’s ready to sink. That was the biggest houseboat they had in Redwood City.”

About the situation in Redwood City

The surreal sighting is the result of a years-long legal battle between the houseboat residents and the government of Redwood City, home to around 80,000 people.

According to local media reports, the city council had asked the residents of the houseboats in the Docktown Marina as they were blocking public access to a state waterway.

The two-storey houseboat was among the dozens of others who had been asked to move their homes away.

The situation stems from a 2015 case when homeowners near Docktown filed a lawsuit with the city claiming the marina was illegal. The Redwood City marina was once home to more than 100 people, according to the media reports.

After nearly a decade of legal battles, the city decided that the residents in the marina had been living there illegally.

This prompted Docktown residents to file lawsuits against the city, hoping to dodge evictions. However, it did not work and as a part of the ongoing legal battle, the city council offered compensation to the residents for the move.

The report by The San Francisco Standard citing the boat’s owner, who declined to give his full name, said that the vessel was expected to reach San Rafael by Monday afternoon.

The United States Coast Guard confirmed to SFGATE that the boat was still in transit on Monday afternoon.
