The United States on Thursday (Jul 11) announced sanctions on three Israelis and five entities it accused of disturbing peace in the occupied West Bank. Of those sanctioned, the most notable is the Lehava organisation led by already-sanctioned Bentzi Gopstein.

"Lehava's members have engaged in repeated acts of violence against Palestinians, often targeting sensitive or volatile areas. Additionally, we are imposing sanctions on four outposts that are owned or controlled by U.S.-designated individuals who have weaponized them as bases for violent actions to displace Palestinians. Outposts like these have been used to disrupt grazing lands, limit access to wells, and launch violent attacks against neighboring Palestinians," said US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.

Additionally, the Group of Seven (G7) foreign ministers in a statement condemned Israel for legalising five outposts in the West Bank.

“We reject the Government of Israel's decision to declare over 1.270 hectares of land in the West Bank 'state lands' – the largest declaration of state land since the Oslo Accords – and the decision to expand existing settlements in the occupied West Bank with 5.295 new housing units and to create three new settlements. The Government of Israel's settlement program is inconsistent with international law and counterproductive to the cause of peace,” the foreign ministers of the G7 said.

Israel's outpost expansion in West Bank

Israel recently expanded its settlements in the West Bank and erected outposts after declaring it "state land." Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich is believed to have spearheaded the expansion efforts.

Smotrich himself approved the construction of new settlements in the territory which are deemed illegal under international law.

US to provide $100mn assistance to Gaza, West Bank

The US earlier announced that it would provide the Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank with an additional $100 million in humanitarian assistance.

"This funding will support USAID's partner the UN World Food Program (WFP) to deliver urgently needed food assistance in Gaza and the West Bank. Nearly the entire population in Gaza is facing emergency levels of food insecurity and is in need of assistance, especially the most vulnerable, including children and pregnant and nursing women," said the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in a statement.

Taking the latest financial assistance into account, the total US funding to the Palestinians has now reached $774 million.

US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti on July 11 talked about the relationship between United States and India. Addressing an event, he said, "It's important for us as Americans and as Indians to remember the more we put into this relationship, the more we will get out. The more we insist on a kind of cynical calculation in the place of a trusted relationship, the less we will get. As I also remind my Indian friends, while it is wider and it is deeper than it's ever been, it is not yet deep enough that if we take it for granted from the Indian side towards America, I'll fight a lot of defence battles trying to help this relationship ahead."

Chinese Navy ships were spotted inside the US economic zone by a cutter on a routine patrol late last week, the US Coast Guard said on Wednesday (Jul 10).

The crew saw three Chinese vessels approximately 124 miles (200 kilometres) north of the Amchitka Pass in the Aleutian Islands, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

Later, a helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak spotted a fourth ship.

The Chinese ships were in international waters but within the US Exclusive Economic Zone.

“The Chinese naval presence operated in accordance with international rules and norms," said Rear Adm. Megan Dean, commander of the Seventeenth Coast Guard District.

"We ensured that there were no disruptions to US interests in the maritime environment around Alaska," added the admiral.

The Chinese ships informed the Coast Guard their mission was freedom of navigation operations.

The Kimball observed the ships until they moved south into the North Pacific Ocean. The Coast Guard reported that its cutters spotted Chinese military ships in the Bering Sea in both 2021 and 2022.

Notably, the sighting of the ships occurred just a week after the Chinese Navy began its annual joint patrol with the Russian Navy in the Pacific Ocean, the US Naval Institute reported on July 5.

According to a retired senior Coast Guard officer, Aaron Davenport said that when Chinese vessels claim that they’re conducting ‘freedom of navigation operations,’ it’s basically China flexing its muscles.

He further stated that this situation is somewhat similar to how the US has deployed the Coast Guard and other ships to the Taiwan Strait to support freedom of navigation and bolster American allies in the region.

However, he emphasised the key difference that the Aleutian Islands are unequivocally part of the US. The Taiwan Strait, on the other hand, separates the island democracy of Taiwan from China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory.

It is worth mentioning that the US military regularly conducts what it calls freedom of navigation operations in disputed waters in Asia that China claims as its own.

As per the US, 'Freedom of navigation' in the waters is in America’s national interest.
