Pakistan batsman Umar Akmal on Thursday has apologised for not reporting spot-fixing approaches made to him ahead of the fifth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) due to which he was handed a 12-month ban by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

In a video released by PCB, Umar can be seen apologising to the Pakistan Cricket Board and his fans and said that he learnt his lessons. He also admitted that the period had been ‘very difficult for him’.

“Seventeen months ago, I made a mistake which caused damage to my cricket and career. I learnt a lot during this time and due to that mistake, Pakistan cricket’s reputation suffered badly. I ask for forgiveness from the PCB and from cricket fans around the world,” said Akmal in a video released by the PCB on Wednesday, reported PTI.&nbsp;

“Some people approached me but I was unable to report the same to the anti-corruption unit, due to which I had to face a 12-month ban. I couldn't play cricket despite being a cricketer. I learned a lot during this time and today I confess before all of you that that mistake brought disrepute to Pakistan Cricket,” he added.

“I, Umar Akmal, would like to request all of you, as ambassadors of the sport, to stay away from any suspicious activities. If any suspicious individuals approach you, please report it to the anti-corruption unit in a timely manner so that your record and career remain clean,” Umar gave a message to his fellow cricketers.

Akmal was found guilty for two charges under PCB’s Anti-Corruption Code as the judgement disqualified him from involving in cricket-related activities till February 19, 2023. The 29-year-old batsman has 14 days to appeal against the two three-year bans which will run concurrently. The detailed judgement also stated that Akmal tried to refuge under the pretext that he has always reported any such approaches in past.

“It appears that he (Umar Akmal) is not prepared to show remorse and seek apology, make admission that he failed to fulfill his responsibility under Anti-Corruption Code...,” Justice Chauhan said in the judgement.

“...rather he tried to take refuge under the pretext that in the past whenever any such approaches were made, the matter was reported by him,” he said. 
Akmal was suspended on the eve of Pakistan Super League 2020 before being charged with two breaches of Article 2.4.4 of PCB’s Anti-Corruption Code in two unrelated cases on March 17.&nbsp;

“The charge as framed is proved and the participant (Umar Akmal) has rendered himself liable to be punished for breach of Article 2.4.4,” Justice Chauhan said.

“It is also admitted by him (Umar Akmal) that he failed to report the approaches and invitation to the PCB Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Department, as required by the PCB Code, Article 2.4.4.

Akmal, who is also the younger brother of Kamran Akmal, last played for Pakistan in October while featuring in 16 Tests, 121 ODIs and 84 T20s and scored 1003, 3194 and 1690 runs respectively.&nbsp;

Kamran confirmed that his brother will approach every possible forum to appeal against the three-year-ban. The veteran batsman said in past, players have received shorter bans for similar offences and Umar’s ban is hard to understand.&nbsp;

“I am definitely surprised at the harsh punishment given to Umar. A three- year ban is very harsh. He will definitely approach every available forum to appeal against this ban,” Kamran said.

“Definitely it is hard to understand because other players in the past have got short bans for similar offences. Yet Umar has got such a harsh punishment.” Akmal was referring to Mohammad Irfan and Mohammad Nawaz who were banned for short periods after not reporting corrupt approaches made to them.

Kamran said Umar would consider hiring a legal counsel to file his appeal after presenting his own case in Monday’s hearing. PCB was represented by legal counsel Tafazzul Rizvi.

His ban is effective from February 20, when he was provisionally suspended by the board under its anti-corruption code, which states a player must report being approached to fix games.&nbsp;

Article 2.4.4 of the code reads: “Failing to disclose to the PCB vigilance and security department (without unnecessary delay) full details of any approaches or invitations received by the participant to engage in corrupt conduct under this Anti-Corruption Code”.
