<p>"For the first time in a face-to-face format, we held talks with the Ukrainian side. Twenty-nine children are due to go to Ukraine and 19 to Russia," Lvova-Belova announced.</p>

<p>She gave no details on why the children were in Russian hands or where they had come from.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ukraine believes Russia has illegally taken more than 19,000 of its children since the start of the 2022 invasion, of which fewer than 400 have been returned.</p>

<p>Moscow denies that charge, saying that it has transferred children for their safety away from fighting zones.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The fate of the children has been highly sensitive in Ukraine since the war began two years ago.</p>

<p>Some of the children's parents were killed, while others were separated from carers by the fast-moving front lines at the start of the invasion.&nbsp;</p>

<p>President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday (Apr 21) said that the approval of over $61 billion in military aid for Ukraine by the US House of Representatives is a testament to the fact that his country will not become "a second Afghanistan."</p>

<p>US House on Saturday (Apr 20) voted 311-112 in favour of giving Ukraine a $60.8bn military aid package&nbsp;at a time when Kyiv has been fighting against Russia's invasion over the past two years and is now facing a critical shortage of ammunition to continue its defences.</p>

<p>"This aid will strengthen Ukraine and send the Kremlin a powerful signal that it will not be the second Afghanistan," Zelensky said in an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press".</p>

<p>"The United States will stay with Ukraine, will protect Ukrainians, and... they'll protect democracy in the world," he added.</p>

<p>The Ukrainian leader further expressed concern that some of his own forces are also "exhausted."</p>

<p>"We need to replace them. But these new brigades, they have to have the equipment," he told Meet the Press.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Republican Speaker Mike Johnson, defied opposition within his party and has placed his leadership position on the line to push forward this legislation.</p>

<p>The legislation would allocate $60 billion for Ukraine, $26 billion for Israel with additional humanitarian aid for conflict zones like Gaza, and $8 billion for the Indo-Pacific region.</p>

<p>A fourth bill contains foreign policy proposals on confiscating Russian assets, sale&nbsp;of Chinese video hosting app TikTok, and imposing sanctions on Iran, China, Russia, and firms that traffic the fentanyl that has been responsible for a concerning rise in overdoses and deaths in recent years in the United States.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It is obvious that now, while Russia has air advantage and can rely on its drone and rocket terror, our capabilities on the ground, unfortunately, are limited," said the Ukrainian president.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>G7 vows to bolster Ukraine air defence</strong></h2>

<p>The G7 will “bolster Ukraine’s air defence capabilities to save lives and protect critical infrastructure,” said the foreign ministers in a statement which came after a three-day meeting in the southern Italian island of Capri.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The statement also said that they would increase defence and security assistance for Kyiv and that they are “determined to continue to provide military, financial, political, humanitarian, economic, and development support to Ukraine and its people.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The statement was also fiercely critical of the Russian invasion of Ukraine which has been going on for more than two years now. Ukraine has said that it is running out of weapons to shoot down Russian missiles and drones as Moscow has ramped up attacks on infrastructure in recent months.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Britain’s Foreign Minister David Cameron also urged G7 allies to be “creative” in using Russian assets, which have been frozen since the invasion in 2022, to help Ukraine.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Military aid to Ukraine has slowed down in recent months, with the war-torn country’s European partners running low on ammunition and the Republicans in the United States Congress blocking funding to Kyiv.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The statement also said that they will work to explore all avenues and options ahead of the G7 Apulia Summit in June to use Russian sovereign assets to support Ukraine which is “consistent with our respective legal systems and international law”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Amid the slowdown in funding the West is looking for ways to use profits from some $300 billion of sovereign Russian assets held in their countries to help Ukraine.</p>
