Poland, Ukraine and Lithuania on Wednesday (Oct 3) signed a deal that would allow speedier exports of Ukrainian grains to the other countries beyond Europe.

According to the deal, the grain inspections that were earlier carried out at the Ukraine-Poland border would now be done at a Lithuanian port on the Baltic Sea.

"From tomorrow, grains that transit (to world markets) via Lithuania will undergo checks at a Lithuanian port and not at the Poland-Ukraine border," Polish Agriculture Minister Robert Telus told journalists.

After undergoing inspections for pests and plant diseases, which will take place from Wednesday, the grain would be exported from the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda by sea around the world.

The move seeks to facilitate the transit of Ukrainian exports through Polish territory, a statement from the Ukrainian farm ministry said, without providing further details.

The agreement over Ukrainian grain exports is expected to help defuse a spat between Ukraine and Poland over the imposition of a temporary embargo on the produce.

The present tensions erupted after Russia's invasion prevented Ukraine from using its traditional Black Sea routes to export grain to world markets, because of which the crops were sent by land through the European Union.

However, because of logistical issues, grain began piling up in EU states neighbouring Ukraine and driving down local prices.

Brussels allowed several countries to impose a temporary embargo on Ukrainian grains.

But when it ended those restrictions in mid-September, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia extended the ban, causing a diplomatic spat between Kyiv and its allies.

In response, Ukraine complained to the World Trade Organization as the spat worsened.

The EU countries said they would keep allowing those products to move through their borders to parts of the world where people are going hungry.

On Wednesday (September 20), the Polish PM, surprising many, said Warsaw would no longer arm Ukraine and instead focus on its own defence.&nbsp;

"We are no longer transferring weapons to Ukraine because we are now arming Poland with more modern weapons," said&nbsp;Morawiecki when quizzed&nbsp;if his country would continue to back Kyiv.&nbsp;

With the general election taking place next month in Poland, and the grain issue remaining a particularly sensitive topic, it doesn't come as a surprise that Morawiecki has taken a provocative stance.&nbsp;

The owner of one of Ukraine’s largest grain producing and exporting companies and his wife were killed after Russian strikes hit the southern Ukrainian port city of Mykolaiv.

Seventy-four-year-old Oleksiy Vadatursky— founder and owner of agriculture company Nibulon—and his wife Raisa were killed in their home overnight on Sunday, AFP quoted Mykolaiv Governor Vitaliy Kim as saying via Telegram.

Nibulon—which is placed in strategically important Mykolaiv city that borders the Russia-occupied Kherson region— specialises in the production and export of wheat, barley and corn, and has its own fleet and shipyard.

The city lies on the main route to Odesa port, which is Ukraine's biggest port on the Black Sea. It has been hit repeatedly since Russia launched its invasion on February 24.

Mykolaiv region’s leader Vitaliy Kim said Vadatursky's "contribution to the development of the agricultural and shipbuilding industry, the development of the region is invaluable", reports BBC.

Their death will deal a major blow to Ukraine’s efforts in resuming wheat exports.

Describing the businessman’s death as “a great loss for all of Ukraine”, President Volodymyr Zelensky in a statement said that Vadatursky had been in the process of building a modern grain market involving a network of transhipment terminals and elevators.

Ukraine strongly suspects that Vadatursky was deliberately targeted by the Russian forces as one of the Russian missiles hit the businessman's bedroom.

On Sunday, Zelensky said that the country may be able to harvest only half its capacity this year due to the continuous attack.

China stockpiling grain when millions of people are facing food insecurity, says US

On Wednesday, Turkiye’s defence minister Hulusi Akar said that all the parties would meet again next week to work out the modalities like joint controls for checking grains in ports and Ankara ensuring the safety of Black Sea export routes for Ukrainian grain, The Guardian reported.

He added that Turkey would also set up a coordination centre with Ukraine, Russia and the UN for grain exports.

Much of Ukrainian grains are exported through the country’s Black Sea ports. But they have been blockaded by Russia, including the crucial hub of Odesa, following the invasion.

Confirming the development, Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, on Twitter said, “Its task will be to carry out general monitoring and coordination of safe navigation in the Black Sea.”

In his daily address, Ukraine’s president Zelensky was quoted as saying, “We are indeed making significant efforts to restore the supply of food to the world market. And I am grateful to the United Nations and Turkey for their respective efforts.”

Lauding the three countries for their coordination for their efforts toward restoring grain supplies, UN Secretary-General&nbsp;António Guterres said that a “critical step forward” had been taken to allow the “safe and secure export” of millions of tonnes of grain via the Black Sea.

He, however, emphasised that no formal agreement has yet been signed between Russia and Ukraine.

“In a world darkened by global crises, today, at last, we have a ray of hope,” said Guterres, briefing correspondents at UN Headquarters in New York.

“A ray of hope to ease human suffering and alleviate hunger around the world. A ray of hope to support developing countries and the most vulnerable people.&nbsp;A ray of hope to bring a measure of much-needed stability to the global food system.”

For several weeks, the Türkiye government has been working with the UN to arrive at a deal for weeks, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, which triggered the price rise of several major commodities like grains, cooking oils, fuel and fertilizer.
