Russia bombarded Ukrainian towns and cities overnight Saturday into Sunday, Ukrainian officials said. Regions that were attacked with missiles, artillery and drones included Kharkiv in the northeast to Odesa in the southwest, according to the officials. At least five Russian missiles hit Kharkiv and surrounding districts late on Saturday and damaged civilian buildings.

Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov wrote on Telegram that one missile hit a house in the village of Kotliary near Kharkiv. Another missile sparked a major fire. Other reports suggested that two houses were badly damaged in Kotliary.

“All the windows got broken: two on this side and two on the other. The roof got partially destroyed,” Liubov Holoshchapova, a local resident told Reuters.

“The child is very scared – we barely took it out of the bathroom. Thank God everyone is alive, honestly,” Nataliia Plotka, a local resident, said.

According to the Ukrainian military’s southern command, Russia aimed self-detonating drones at Odesa's air defences. No casualties were reported.

Meanwhile, over 70 artillery attacks were reported from Zaporizhzhia where at least one man was hurt and 10 houses were destroyed, according to Yurii Malashko, head of the region's military administration.

Another Russian attack destroyed a nine-story building in Vuhledar in the eastern Donetsk region, according to the regional leader Pavlo Kyrylenko.&nbsp;

Further, in the battle for Bakhmut, Russia's defence ministry said on Sunday that its forces had captured more territory in the city. The battle for Bakhmut has turned into one of the bloodiest of the 14-month war. It added that its troops secured two more blocks in Bakhmut's western districts.&nbsp;

Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the private Wagner military force, had earlier claimed that his troops control 80 per cent of Bakhmut. Kyiv has repeatedly denied claims that its forces are poised to withdraw.

Fresh Russian shelling on Sunday morning killed at least six civilians and injured eight in Kostiantynivka in eastern Ukraine, a senior Ukrainian official said. The place is just about 20 kilometres west of Bakhmut, the battleground for the war in the last eight months as Russian forces try to gain a stronghold in the city.&nbsp;

"Russians have carried out massive shelling of the town of Kostiantynivka," Andriy Yermak, head of the office of&nbsp;Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said on the Telegram messaging app.

Yermak also shared photos of the region that was hit, showing partial destruction of buildings and craters from explosions.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed his forces for pushing out Russian troops from around Kyiv a year ago. Zelensky, on Sunday, hailed Ukraine for repulsing "biggest force against humanity".

"You have stopped the biggest force against humanity of our time. You have stopped a force that despises everything and wants to destroy everything that gives people meaning," Zelensky said on Telegram. He also shared&nbsp;photos of areas liberated a year ago, when Russian troops retreated from around the Ukrainian capital.

Earlier, the chief of the army said that Ukraine will continue to fight for its independence, a year after bodies of civilians were found in Bucha after the retreat of Russian troops.&nbsp;

"We will continue to fight for the independence of our nation," Valery Zaluzhny wrote on Telegram.

Russian missiles struck a humanitarian support centre in an eastern Ukraine town early Friday, killing five people, emergency services said.&nbsp;

"The town of Kostyantynivka came under rocket fire during the night of March 24. One of the rockets hit a single-storey building," the emergency services said on Telegram.&nbsp;

Of those killed, three were women and two were men, the services informed. The latest attack comes as Moscow's forces push to capture the industrial Donetsk region.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian troops are preparing to launch a counterattack as Russia's offensive begins to falter, a commander said. But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that without a faster supply of arms the war could last years.

The Ukrainian military said early on Friday that 1,020 Russian troops had been killed over the previous 24 hours. Moscow's troops had launched unsuccessful attacks on the towns of Lyman, Avdiivka, Mariinka, and Shakhtarske, the military said. But their main focus was still the mining town of Bakhmut.

"The enemy has not stopped its assault of Bakhmut," Ukraine's General Staff said in a report.
