Amid the row over scrapping of a nuclear&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/duplicity-and-lies-says-france-after-australia-cancels-submarine-deal-414079">submarine</a> deal, the French government has cancelled a defence meeting with the UK set for this week, reports said.

The diplomatic crisis&nbsp;was triggered after the Biden administration along with UK PM Boris Johnson announced last week that they had entered into a deal with the Australian government on helping the country to manufacture nuclear-powered submarines.

PM Scott Morrison had announced last week that Australia would no longer work with France on acquiring submarines.&nbsp;

The announcement led to a full-blown crisis between France and Australia as the Macron government recalled its ambassadors from Washington and Canberra.

Reports claimed President<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/hidden-agenda-behind-deal-france-called-a-betrayal-413977/amp">&nbsp;Emmanuel Macron</a> will be speaking to US President Joe Biden on the crisis, which has created fissures between the Western allies.

Morrison, while speaking on the deal, said that Australia had "deep and grave concerns" about French submarines while adding that he understood the French government's "disappointment" over the deal which has now been scrapped.

"I think they would have had every reason to know that we had deep and grave concerns that the capability being delivered by the Attack Class submarine was not going to meet our strategic interests," Morrison said.

The Australian PM added the decision was based on "strategic national interest" while asserting that he does not "regret" the decision.

Australia's defence minister Peter Dutton said the government was "upfront" about the deal with France.

Dutton informed that the<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/aukus-angry-france-cancels-gala-event-in-washington-413759 "> American</a> nuclear submarines do need charging while the French subs required to be charged which became a major roadblock for the Australian government.

France on Wednesday threatened to&nbsp;cut power supplies to the British Channel Island of Jersey if its fishermen are not granted full access to UK fishing waters under the post-Brexit trading terms.

Seas Minister Annick Girardin said she was "disgusted" to learn that Jersey had issued 41 licenses with unilaterally imposed conditions, including the time French fishing vessels could spend in its waters.

"In the (Brexit) deal there are retaliatory measures. Well, we're ready to use them," Girardin told France's National Assembly on Tuesday.

"Regarding Jersey, I remind you of the delivery of electricity along underwater cables ... Even if it would be regrettable if we had to do it, we'll do it if we have to."

With a population of 108,000, Jersey imports 95% of its electricity from France, with diesel generators and gas turbines providing backup, according to energy news agency S&amp;P Global Platts.

Jersey`s government said that France and the European Union had expressed their unhappiness with the conditions placed on the issuance of fishing licenses.

Jersey’s external relations minister, Ian Gorst, said the island had issued permits in accordance with the post-Brexit trade terms, and that they stipulated any new license must reflect how much time a vessel spent in Jersey's waters before Brexit.

"We are entering a new era and it takes time for all to adjust. Jersey has consistently shown its commitment to finding a smooth transition to the new regime," Horst said in a statement.

The rocky island sits just 14 miles (23 km) off the northern French coast and 85 miles (137 km) south of Britain`s shores.

The French threat is the latest flare up over fishing rights between the two countries.

Last month, French trawlermen angered by delays to licences to fish inside British waters blocked lorries carrying UK-landed fish with burning barricades as they arrived in Boulogne-sur-Mer, Europe's largest seafood processing centre.
