Two suicide bombers launched an attack near the Turkish Parliament and Ministry of Interior Affairs building on Sunday (Oct 1) in Ankara, the officials said. While one of the terrorists died in the explosion, the other was gunned down by security officers.

Minister Ali Yerlikaya said that two attackers approached the entrance of Turkey's Interior Ministry's General Directorate of Security at about 9.30am local time on Sunday in a commercial vehicle.

"One of the terrorists blew himself up and the other terrorist was neutralised," Yerlikaya said. He added that two police officers were "slightly injured" in the fire caused by the blast.

Turkish media also reported that gunshots were heard in the same area after the blast.

A clip from the CCTV footage that went viral on social media showed the moment the blast took place near Turkey's parliament.

Suicide bomber triggers blast near Turkish parliament, another shot; 2 officers injured

Turkey declared Wednesday a day of national mourning over a deadly attack at Istanbul's international airport blamed by the government on Islamic State jihadists.

The government has ordered flags at half-staff. Turkey declared three days of national mourning after a twin sucide bombing killed over 100 people in the Turkish capital Ankara in October last year, again blamed on the IS group.
A triple suicide bombing at Istanbul's international airport left 41 people dead, 13 of them foreign nationals, and 239 wounded, the city governor said in a statement.

The governor's office said 109 of the 239 wounded were discharged from hospital.

It said 13 of the dead were foreigners.

A Turkish official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said 5 of the dead were from Saudi Arabia, 2 were from Iraq, and 1 from Tunisia, Uzbekistan, China, Iran, Ukraine and Jordan.

Turkey remains on high security alert after a series of attacks on its soil blamed not only on the IS group but also Kurdish militants.

Turkey declares national mourning Wednesday over Istanbul attack

Passengers, who arrived to JFK airport in New York from Istanbul, said on Tuesday they were shocked to learn about an attack on the Turkish airport that killed 36 and injured 150 more, but they were lucky to have missed the incident.

Three suicide bombers opened fire then blew themselves up at Istanbul international airport on Tuesday in what Turkey's Prime Minister said appeared to have been an attack by Islamic State militants.

One attacker opened fire in the departure hall with an automatic rifle, sending passengers diving for cover and trying to flee, before all three blew themselves up in or around the arrival hall a floor below, witnesses and officials said.

Passengers said they learned about the attacks in flight, a short time after they passed through the same areas of the airport.

"I can't believe it that, you know, I feel like, how are we alive? If the flight was delayed two hours, we would have been exactly on that spot. Looking at the pictures, we were right there. So, it's just horrific. It's just unbelievable, and, just speechless really. It keeps happening and happening. It just happened in Belgium. It just happened just now in Istanbul, so I can't even fly anymore. I'm like so scared. Everybody in flight - the same way. I mean, it's just disbelief. I mean we're so lucky we got away with it, it looks like," a passenger named Adam told NBC.

Three women, who were travelling together from Barcelona, said they could have been caught in the attacks had they missed their connection in Istanbul.

"We were running from Barcelona, got to Istanbul, got there pretty late, almost missed the flight, got a little nervous about almost missing the flight, and then saw the news on the plane, and you know it... we're really happy to be home," one of the women said.

One of her travelling companions said she thought security in Istanbul's Ataturk airport was thorough.

"From a connecting flight on an international flight - we went through two additional checkpoints just to get to our gate," she said.

"We went through metal detectors, our bags went through, then our passports were checked.... the security seemed good," she said.

Turkish police fired shots to try to stop two of the attackers just before they reached a security checkpoint at the arrivals hall, but they detonated their explosives, a Turkish official said.

Istanbul's Ataturk airport partially opened early today morning.

Passengers traveling outbound from Istanbul are being allowed to enter the airport after undertaking security checks. However, the international arrivals section in the lower part of the airport remains closed, as several emergency vehicles maintain a security presence outside the terminal building.

The information board inside the airport showed that about one third of scheduled flights have been canceled with a host of others delayed.

Passengers arriving at JFK from Turkey horrified by suicide attack at airport

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has said the terror attack in Turkey is a reminder that the US cannot retreat from this part of the world and needs to deepen co-operation with allies in the Middle East and Europe to take on this threat.

"Today's attack in Istanbul only strengthens our resolve to defeat the forces of terrorism and radical jihadism around the world. And it reminds us that the United States cannot retreat," Clinton said in a statement yesterday.

"We must deepen our cooperation with our allies and partners in the Middle East and Europe to take on this threat," she said, adding that such cooperation is essential to protecting homeland and keeping the country safe.

"Yet another terrorist attack, this time in Turkey. Will the world ever realise what is going on? So sad," Republican presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump tweeted.

"We must do everything possible to keep this horrible terrorism outside the United States," Trump said.

In a statement, the Trump campaign said the terrorist threat has never been greater.

"Our enemies are brutal and ruthless and will do anything to murder those who do not bend to their will. We must take steps now to protect America from terrorists, and do everything in our power to improve our security to keep America safe," the Trump campaign said.

Former Republican presidential candidate and Florida senator Marco Rubio said the US stands with ally Turkey in condemning this attack.

"We stand ready to assist them as we learn more about the perpetrators responsible for this," he said.

House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer said the attack in Istanbul was a heinous assault on a key US ally and the Turkish people should know with certainty that the American people stand in solidarity with them in this difficult hour.

"Whenever terrorists attack a major global transit point, as they did a few months ago in Brussels and again today in Istanbul, they seek to erect barriers of fear that divide the free nations of the world. But we will not be divided," Hoyer said.

"We will stand together to meet the challenge of groups like ISIS which represent the antithesis of our most important values - democracy, individual freedom, and opportunity for all," he said.
