Despite all the anti-Chinese remarks he made, Donald Trump was a surprising hero among Chinese nationalists during the presidential campaign. The former reality TV star drew his support from Chinese netizens either privately sharing his loathing for self-serving elitists (China has plenty of them) or excited by the prospects of the oafish Trump speeding up American decline and Chinese ascendency.

These fans were in for a nasty shock when the president-elect tweeted that he had accepted a phone call of congratulations from Taiwanese President Tsai Yingwen&mdash;a figure of contempt for Chinese nationalists. The deceptively innocent exchange marked the first time in almost four decades that an American president (or soon to be president) had openly communicated with a leader of the island-state.

To make matters worse, Trump referred to Tsai on equal terms as president, thus directly contradicting the Beijing-invented narrative of Taiwan as a breakaway province from the Chinese mainland, rather than a de facto independent state with its own leader.

ONE CHINA POLICY

Days later, he hinted at a possible end to the One China policy, making the assertion that the United States was not necessarily bound to such an agreement. Under this policy, both Taipei and Beijing make claim to the title of China (Taiwan is officially the Republic of China), but agree that there is only &ldquo;one China&rdquo;&mdash;in an abstract sense if not a unified nation-state.

Beyond the relationship of the two Chinas, the policy means that no country can hold official relations with both the governments of Taipei and Beijing. For its part, the US gives diplomatic recognition to Beijing but still retains unofficial ties with Taipei.

If Trump steers US policy to treating Taiwan more like an independent state, it undermines the One China principle and by extension the Chinese Communist Party&rsquo;s (CCP) decades-old claim to the island. Feeling its sovereign right over Taipei under threat, Beijing will retaliate.

In fact, on December 15, China captured a US Navy drone, possibly to send Trump a warning message and flex its muscles in the South China Sea. Even before stepping into office, Trump has shown his potential to damage stability in East Asia.

Which makes the threats posed after Trump enters the White House all the more serious. If he chooses to further provoke China after his inauguration in January 2017, it could easily lead to a cycle of escalation in an already volatile region. Besides Taiwan, much of East and Southeast Asia (backed by the US) hold competing claims to territory with China.

It&rsquo;s not clear whether Trump&rsquo;s phone call with Tsai was an intentional plot to undermine Beijing or a result of his ignorance to the sensitivities within East Asian international politics. Given that he is a president-elect who rejects Central Intelligence Agency briefings, it was likely the latter. What kind of diplomatic crisis might he fall into next when dealing with, say, the South China Sea dispute?

DEAL OR NO DEAL

Trump should take a step back before nearing the brink with China. Besides, this diplomatic faux-pas should not be interpreted as a sign of his suddenly principled approach to world politics. Trump is right to stand up for Taiwan. But he is likely doing so for the wrong reasons.

Unlike his predecessors, Trump has shown little concern about US-led stability or democracy in the region. Rather, the protectionist president-elect wants to cut a deal with China over trade for the security of white-collar American jobs. In his official statement, Trump said: &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t know why we have to be bound by a &lsquo;one China policy&rsquo; unless we make a deal with China having to do with other things, including trade.&rdquo;

Foreign policy is, of course, about making deals&mdash;a skill that Trump likes to remind people he excels at. But US policy needs to be underpinned by principles and a great strategy in order to work. Simply making deals risks reducing allies like Taiwan down to bargaining chips that can be tossed away when the price is right.

Diplomacy with Beijing is not that easy

US&nbsp;President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday announced that Thomas Bossert, former deputy homeland security adviser to President George W&nbsp;Bush, would be his White House adviser on security and counterterrorism issues, according to a statement.

US President-elect Donald Trump has created a new trade body within the White House that would report directly to him and for his economic team roped in a billionaire&nbsp;economist who, like Trump, is know for his&nbsp;anti-China stance.

The council would be headed by economist and University of California-Irvin Professor Peter Navarro, who would serve as assistant to the President and director of Trade and Industrial Policy, the team said in a statement.

According to the transition team, the mission of the National Trade Council will be to advise the President on innovative strategies in trade negotiations, coordinate with other agencies to assess US manufacturing capabilities and the defence industrial base, and help match unemployed American workers with new opportunities in the skilled manufacturing sector.

Later in the day, Trump announced to appoint billionaire investor Carl Icahn to serve as special advisor on issues related to regulatory reform. Icahn was one of Trump&#39;s earliest supporters, and his intimate knowledge of what businesses need to grow and thrive makes him a trusted voice in developing President-elect&#39;s &quot;America First&quot;&nbsp;economic agenda, the media statement said.

The protection covers an area of the Arctic roughly the size of Spain or Thailand and 31 sea canyons in the Atlantic.

A senior administration official said that there was a &quot;strong legal basis&quot; for the move, and suggested Trump could not revoke the decision without an act of Congress.

The action, based on a law from the 1950s, was taken in tandem with the Canadian government and introduces an additional headache should Trump try to row it back.

Obama said in a statement that the measures would &quot;protect a sensitive and unique ecosystem&quot;.

Its detractors -- and they are many -- have denounced an electoral system that flies in the face of the venerated &quot;one man, one vote&quot; principle, and which perversely encourages presidential candidates to campaign in only a few key states while ignoring whole swaths of the country. &nbsp;

But despite the torrent of criticism this method has faced for decades, no reform attempt has ever succeeded.

When American voters cast their ballots on November 8, they did not in fact directly elect the next occupant of the White House. Instead, they picked 538 &quot;electors&quot; charged with translating their wishes into reality.&nbsp;

Trump won a clear majority of those electors -- 306, with 270 needed for election -- despite dramatically losing the popular vote to his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.

A similar scenario took place in 2000, when George W. Bush became president even though Democrat Al Gore won more popular votes.&nbsp;

However, the gap is far more dramatic in 2016, with Clinton scoring nearly three million extra votes over Trump.

This Monday, electors will convene in each of the 50 states, plus the District of Columbia, to officially designate the next president and vice president.

Following an extraordinarily vitriolic campaign, this step in the electoral process -- normally little more than a formality -- has been thrust into the spotlight.

The future White House chief of staff, Reince Preibus, told Fox News Sunday that the pressure on the electoral college not to elect Trump is &quot;about Democrats that can&#39;t accept the outcome of the election. It&#39;s about delegitimizing the american system.&quot;

The final result may not be known on Monday, as states are given several days to report their numbers. Electoral College, unloved but everpresent, prepares to anoint Trump

Electoral College electors will not receive any intelligence briefing concerning Russian interference in the 2016 US election, says the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) on Friday, CNN reports.

The intelligence community said it will not discuss the Russian hacks until a review ordered by Obama is completed in January, <a href="http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/coming-soon-real-presidential-election-n696556">NBC </a>reports.&nbsp;

US intelligence agencies said as far back as October 7 they were &quot;confident&quot; Russia was involved in efforts to hack information related to the election, and Obama himself suggested&nbsp;Friday, in his last press conference of the year, that Putin&nbsp;was responsible for meddling in the US election. &quot;Not much happens in Russia without Vladimir Putin...this happened at the highest levels of the Russian government,&quot; he said.

&nbsp;

In the US election, citizens actually vote for the Electoral College voters, who then usually select the presidential candidate their state favoured. But with Trump winning the election despite&nbsp;losing the popular vote by millions, this year presents controversy.

Earlier this month, a group of electors for Clinton called for a briefing ahead of the vote in an open letter to Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, CNN reports.

They sought information on &quot;whether there are ongoing investigations into ties between Donald Trump, his campaign or associates, and Russian government interference in the election, the scope of these investigations, how far those investigations may have reached, and who was involved in those investigations,&quot; CNN reports.

&nbsp;

On Monday, CNN reported&nbsp;that Clinton&#39;s campaign manager, John Podesta, backed the electors seeking to be briefed on the question of foreign interventions, the closst Podesta and anyone from the Clinton camp came to calling into question the legitimacy of Trump&#39;s presidency.

Podesta said in a statement: &quot;We believe that the administration owes it to the American people to explain what it knows regarding the extent and manner of Russia&#39;s interference and this be done as soon as possible.

Will the Electoral College&nbsp;not&nbsp;vote Trump?

While a total of 29 US states have laws that require the electors to cast their votes for whichever candidate won that state&#39;s popular vote,&nbsp;the penalties for not doing so are weak.

Christopher Suprun, a paramedic from Texas, said he will vote against Trump despite the result of&nbsp;his&nbsp;state&#39;s election. &quot;Donald Trump lacks the foreign policy experience and demeanor needed to be a commander in chief,&quot; he wrote in a New York Times op-ed, <a href="http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/coming-soon-real-presidential-election-n696556">NBC reports.</a>

Also from Texas is elector&nbsp;Art Sisneros, who resigned in November, saying a vote for Trump &quot;would bring dishonour to God,&#39;&quot; NBC quotes him as saying,

However, Republicans say that party lawyers have contacted 306 Republican electors, and they believe only a few may vote for someone other than Trump, NBC reports. An Associated Press survey, which interviewed 330 of the 538 electors, found &quot;widespread Democratic aggravation with the electoral process but little expectation that the hustle of anti-Trump maneuvering can derail him&quot;.

They sought information on "whether there are ongoing investigations into ties between Donald Trump, his campaign or associates, and Russian government interference in the election, the scope of these investigations, how far those investigations may have reached, and who was involved in those investigations," CNN reports. On Monday, CNN reported that Clinton's campaign manager, John Podesta, backed the electors seeking to be briefed on the question of foreign interventions, the closst Podesta and anyone from the Clinton camp came to calling into question the legitimacy of Trump's presidency. Podesta said in a statement: "We believe that the administration owes it to the American people to explain what it knows regarding the extent and manner of Russia's interference and this be done as soon as possible. Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson was chosen as the new US Secretary of State by President-elect Donald Trump, a nomination that could face intense scrutiny due to the veteran oil executive&#39;s close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

We won't let this happen anymore," Trump told the crowd. "Can you believe that? You get laid off and then they won't give you your severance pay unless you train the people that are replacing you. Two former Disney World employees, Leo Perrero and Dena Moore, have filed lawsuits in federal court against Disney and two global consulting companies, HCL and Cognizant.They have alleged that the companies conspired to replace American workers with cheaper foreign labour brought to the US on H-1B visas. The two employees were among 250 Disney tech workers laid off from their jobs at Walt Disney World in Orlando in January 2015. Following the lawsuits, Disney said in a statement, “These lawsuits are based on an unsustainable legal theory and are a wholesale misrepresentation of the facts,” the New York Times reported. According to the New York Times, the lawsuits represent the first time Americans have gone to federal court to sue both outsourcing companies that imported immigrants and the American company that contracted with those businesses. If confirmed by the Senate, McMahon would join Trump&rsquo;s economic team that includes Wall Street executives Steven Mnuchin at the Treasury Department and Wilbur Ross at Commerce.

68-year-old McMahon is a co-founder and former CEO of the professional wrestling franchise WWE.

&quot;Linda has a tremendous background and is widely recognised as one of the country&rsquo;s top female executives advising businesses around the globe,&quot; Trump said in the announcement, Reuters reported.&nbsp;

McMahon, an early supporter of Trump&rsquo;s presidential campaign, said her goal as the SBA chief would be to promote small businesses and help them grow and thrive.

China has launched a diplomatic protest in reponse to Donald Trump&#39;s 10-minute phone conversation with the President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen.&nbsp;

The US under Jimmy Carter broke off diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1979, and it&#39;s believed that no US president or president-elect has spoken with a Taiwanese leader since.

For his part, Trump claimed in a tweet that Tsai Ing-wen took the initiative to call him first. The White House insisted there was no change to its stance on China. "We remain firmly committed to our 'one China' policy," said New Price, a national security spokesman for President Obama. "Our fundamental interest is in peaceful and stable cross-Strait relations," Price continued.
