"It was a very productive and open discussion. We will take things forward. There was very little discussion on defence issues. S-400 issue was not discussed. We highlighted the potential of cooperation in this area which was welcomed by President Trump," Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said at a press conference here on the sidelines of the 14th G20 Summit.

This comes a few days after US Secretary of State Micheal Pompeo had said the two countries should be able to provide security for themselves. It also comes at a time when the US has put forth suggestions for India to look for alternatives to the S-400 missile system, as transactions with Russia risk triggering CAATSA (Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act).

At the press briefing, Gokhale said Modi and Trump agreed that they would meet at an early date to try and sort out issues pertaining to trade between the two countries.

"It was agreed that trade ministers of both countries would meet on an early date and would try to sort out these issues. Both US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and their Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin were in the room. Now, we expect an early meeting," he said.

With regards to tensions brewing between the US and Iran, the Foreign Secretary said the primary focus was on ensuring stability in the region, not just in the backdrop of energy needs, but also to ensure the safety of the Indian diaspora in the Gulf.

"On Iran, the primary focus was on how we ensure stability there, as instability affects us in many ways, not just in a matter of energy needs, but also in terms of our large diaspora in Gulf, 8 million Indians in the Gulf and economic interests. The two leaders agreed that they and officials will continue to remain in touch to ensure that the region remains stable; that is in the interest of us and the US," he noted.

Prime Minister Modi also tried to explore and leverage opportunities in order to achieve the goals under his flagship programme "Make in India" using 5G technology, Gokhale observed.

"On 5G, we were concerned to bring the focus on how can we leverage our market, our capabilities in design and technology of software, and our desire as to how to make this technology as part of Make in India. PM's real focus was on Make in India and the potential that this technology has to achieve this goal."

When asked if trade and defence tensions between the two large democracies can hamper their relationship, Gokhale said, "No one issue is going to impact the largest strategic relation between India and US which is deep and broad. We have some issues. We will work on it."

In the trilateral meeting held between US, India and Japan, Gokhale said the main topic of discussion was Indo-Pacific, how the three countries can work together in terms of connectivity, infrastructure, ensuring peace and security, and in terms of working together to build upon this new concept.

Besides India, the US and host Japan, UK, European Union, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Russia, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, Republic of Korea, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey are also participating in the Summit.

PM Modi will also be meeting Thailand Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, South Korea President Moon Jae-in, German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the first day of the two-day G20 summit, the sixth he is participating since he became prime minister in 2014.

On Friday, PM Modi will attend two trilateral -- Japan America &amp; India (JAI)&nbsp;and Russia India &amp; China trilateral (RIC). On the same day&nbsp;he will also be present at the informal BRICS Meet.&nbsp;

The first meeting of JAI trilateral took place in December of 2018 on the sidelines of G20 summit in Argentina. While RIC was revived at heads of state/government level only last year when leaders of all the three countries-- Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and PM Modi -- met on the sidelines of G20 summit.

"The execution sentence was carried out for Jalal Haji Zavar, a contractor for the defence ministry's aerospace organisation who spied for the CIA and the American government," ISNA reported, quoting the Iranian military.

ISNA said he was convicted by Iran's military court and that he was executed, at an unspecified time, at the Rajayi Shahr prison in the city of Karaj, west of Tehran.

The agency did not say when Zavar was arrested, noting however that his contract with the defence ministry had been terminated during the Iranian year 1389 (March 2010-2011).

He was identified as a spy by the defence ministry's intelligence unit, ISNA said.

During the investigation the suspect "explicitly confessed to spying for the CIA" in return for money, ISNA said, adding that "documents and espionage devices were found at his house".

Zavar's ex-wife was convicted of "involvement in espionage" and is serving a 15-year jail sentence, the agency said.

The report comes days after Iran said it had dismantled a "new" US spy network in the country linked to the CIA, amid escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington.

In what it termed a "wide-reaching blow" to US intelligence, state news agency IRNA said on Tuesday that Tehran had carried out the operation in cooperation with "foreign allies", without naming any state.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran flared up after Iran, on Tuesday, said it shot down a US "spy" drone which violated its airspace -- a claim the US denies -- near the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

In response, the US was ready to carry out a military strike against Iran.

Key aspects of the agreement are still unclear, including whether Mexico has pledged to buy more US agricultural products and if the deal materially expanded a previous commitment by Mexico to more vigorously police its southern border with Guatemala.

Top Democratic senators said many aspects of the deal were not new, while the Mexican ambassador to the United States declined to confirm whether it contained any commitments on agricultural goods.

The deal announced on Friday after three days of talks in Washington averted Trump's threatened imposition of 5% import tariffs on all Mexican goods that had been due to start on Monday unless Mexico committed to doing more to help reduce an increase in migrants arriving at the US southern border.

"Mexico was not being cooperative on the Border...and now I have full confidence, especially after speaking to their President yesterday, that they will be very cooperative and want to get the job properly done," Trump said on Twitter.

"Importantly, some things not mentioned in the yesterday press release, one in particular, were agreed upon. That will be announced at the appropriate time," he added.

Trump did not elaborate and the White House and State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Friday's joint communique broadly sketched the terms of the agreement but contained few details.

The Mexican peso jumped against the dollar in Asian markets and US equity futures rose on Sunday following the deal.

The agreement expedites a program known as the Migration Protection Protocols that was announced in December. That program sends migrants seeking asylum in the United States to wait in Mexico while their cases are being processed.

Friday's agreement would see the United States immediately expand the implementation of the MPP across its entire 2,000-mile (3,220-km) southern border, the State Department said on Friday.

But as of Sunday night, US-bound asylum seekers were not yet being sent back to additional Mexican border towns, three Mexican officials said.

Officials in the Mexican border states of Sonora, south of the US states of Arizona and New Mexico, and Tamaulipas, south of Texas, said they were unaware of plans to expand the number of border crossings where the asylum seekers must be returned to Mexican territory to await processing.

The deal will also see Mexico deploy the National Guard police force to its southern border, where many Central American migrants enter Mexico.

Uncertainty over Agriculture

On Saturday, a New York Times report, citing officials from both countries familiar with the negotiations, said most of Friday's deal had already been sketched out in March, when Mexico agreed to deploy its National Guard throughout the country, with priority given to the southern border.

Trump tweeted on Sunday that the Times report was false, adding: "We have been trying to get some of these Border Actions for a long time, as have other administrations, but were not able to get them, or get them in full, until our signed agreement with Mexico."

But it was business as usual over the weekend at the busiest crossing point along Mexico's porous southern border with Guatemala. Evidence of Mexico's promised crackdown on new arrivals trying to reach the United States was nowhere to be seen, as a small fleet of rafts carried migrants hoping to escape the violence of Central America.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer also said there appeared to be little new in the deal, adding it was a "bogus" solution used by Trump to get out of an ill-conceived tariff threat.

"This is likely to have only a small impact on solving the root causes of Central American migration because many of the components are things Mexico had already said they would do," Schumer said on Twitter.

US Vice President Mike Pence said on Twitter, however, that Trump's "strong stand got Mexico to do things they have never done before."

There is further uncertainty around Trump's comments on Saturday that Mexico had agreed to "immediately begin" buying "large quantities" of agricultural goods from US farmers.

Defying increasing criticism from within his own party, US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he would likely go ahead with new tariffs on imports from Mexico to pressure it to clamp down on rising numbers of migrants entering the United States.

Trump told a news conference in London he expected to impose 5% tariffs on Mexican imports from Monday, citing the high number of mostly Central American immigrants crossing the US southern border with Mexico.

In a last-ditch attempt to find a resolution, a Mexican delegation including Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard is set to take part in talks at the White House on Wednesday afternoon, hosted by US Vice President Mike Pence.&nbsp;

Trump will be in Europe to commemorate the anniversary of D-Day.

If the tariffs go ahead, the United States will be in a serious dispute with two of its three top trading partners. US relations with China have worsened in the past month as Washington and Beijing have slapped additional tariffs on each others` imports.&nbsp;

Trump has threatened to increase the tariffs on Mexico to as high as 25% later this year if the Mexican government does not do more to stop the migrants.

The president warned Republicans in Congress not to block his efforts. "I don`t think they will do that. I think if they do, it`s foolish," he said.&nbsp;

But Republican senators warned that the White House may not have their backing, with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell saying there was "not much support" among other Republicans for the tariffs. The threat has spooked global markets and put the ratification of a three-way trade pact between the two countries and Canada that took over a year to negotiate in doubt.

The tariffs have also been criticized by the US Chamber of Commerce and industry groups on concerns about increased costs for US businesses and consumers.&nbsp;

Mexico exports a broad array of goods to the United States, ranging from cars, auto parts and televisions to popular brands of beer. Toyota Motor Corp said on Tuesday tariffs on Mexican imports could cost the automaker`s major suppliers as much as $1 billion.&nbsp;

Mexican leaders are expected to show White House officials on Wednesday that they are taking steps to stem the northward flow of migrants, but Trump said the talks might not resolve the issue.

"We`re going to see if we can do something, but I think it`s more likely that the tariffs go on," Trump said during a state visit to Britain, describing immigrants entering the United States illegally as an "invasion."

Asked to comment, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador told a news conference he was optimistic that a deal on tariffs and migration could be reached.

US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, speaking at an event in Miami, said of talks with Mexican officials: "Hopefully, we can work out a sensible solution to the border crisis and minimize the economic fallout."&nbsp;
