<p>Refineries are currently required to blend 20.09 billion gallons of biofuel in 2020, about 10 per cent of projected crude oil production, according to the US Energy Information Administration.</p>

<p>President Donald Trump has been criticized by the corn-based ethanol industry after his Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) granted exemptions to the blend requirement for dozens of oil companies over the last two years.</p>

<p>“We can increase the production of renewable energy feedstocks and set a goal to increase biofuel production efficiency and competitiveness to achieve market-driven blend rates of 15 per cent of transportation fuels in 2030 and 30 per cent of transportation fuels by 2050,” the agency said in a statement.</p>

<p>Trump's first term ends in 2021, and he is campaigning for reelection in November.</p>
