Scheffler was as solid as ever with five birdies, his sole blemish coming on the par-4 13th where he found two bunkers before missing a nine-foot putt for par. The American was happy with his performance even if he felt he had been unlucky on the greens.

"I feel like my swing is in a good spot. I've hit it nice last couple days. Really felt like I've hit a lot of lips on the greens, but hitting a lot of quality putts," he said. "Today the putts that did not go in did not -- a lot of them did not miss the cup by very much. A lot of quality stuff out there, and I'm in a good spot going into the weekend," he added.

But while the handicap system gives Scheffler a buffer of protection from his rivals, Morikawa appears determined to push the favorite all the way. The American reached the turn 4-under and while he bogeyed the 11th he bounced back with birdies on the 13th and 14th.&nbsp; A late suspension of play for a storm warning threatened to disrupt his momentum, but Morikawa came out and birdied the last two holes to send a clear message to Scheffler.

"For me, it's just bringing energy and just kind of staying alive out there. I've got a game plan that I've set out, and I'm really going to stick to that, just knowing that we've got two more rounds left of the season," he said.

Being paired with Scheffler allowed Morikawa to see his rival close-up but he said he remained focused on his own task. "He's such a good player that you just know he's going to keep going low and making birdies. I saw that firsthand. I've seen it for years. For me, it's just keep my foot on the gas," he said.

"Just like any other tournament, if I came out here and shot 2-over par and this was a regular stroke play event, I'd be sitting pretty far back from the lead," he said. "So treating it like I would any other tournament, just staying in my lane and doing the things I'm good at, and that's just trying to focus on the task at hand and let all the other stuff take care of itself," he said.

Scheffler had said before the tournament that the key at East Lake was to keep the ball on the fairways, given the rough would make it tough to control the ball into the firm, new greens.

Brooks&nbsp;Koepka&nbsp;opted to take no chances with the Ryder Cup coming up, pulling out of the US PGA Tour Championship on Saturday after hurting his left wrist hitting out of the rough.

"Same wrist I had issues with back in '17, '18, so just making sure it's all good," said&nbsp;Koepka, who injured his left wrist when his club struck a tree root as he hit out of the rough on the way to a bogey at the 10th hole at East Lake in Atlanta.

He parred two holes, but after failing to reach the green in three at the par-four 13th, departed the course.

It's just the latest injury setback for the four-time major winner, who won the last of his Grand Slam titles in 2019.

In recent years he's battled injuries not only to his wrist but also to his left knee and hip.

In March he needed surgery after dislocating his right kneecap.

That injury required surgery and caused him to miss build-up to the Masters, and&nbsp;Koepka's results since then have been spotty.

He was 16 strokes off the pace when he left the course on Saturday, but indicated to Golf Channel he expected to be fit for the Ryder Cup, the USA v Europe matchplay showdown scheduled to start at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin on September 24.

"Simple math says that if I play a clean card the guys behind me have to shoot 67, so that helps," Woods told reporters after a five-under-par 65 at East Lake.

"I don't have to shoot 63 or 64 and hope I get help. That's a big difference. This is a spot I'd much rather be in than four or five back.

"I feel good about it. I've been playing well throughout the entire summer, just piecing it together, building, building and building.

"Finally I've come to a point where I've got control of the lead."

A victory on Sunday would be his 80th on tour -- two short of Sam Snead's record -- and his first since the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in August, 2013.

Woods has not been the closer of old in his return this year from a spinal fusion, most notably at the British Open at Carnoustie where he charged into the lead halfway through the final round before faltering.

But he said he had felt comfortable on that occasion, even if he did not hoist the Claret Jug.

"When I grabbed the lead at the Open Championship (it) didn't really feel abnormal, even though it's been years since I've been in those spots," he said.

Woods led by five strokes late on, but showed a hint of fragility by fluffing a pitch shot at the par-four 16th, where he failed to carry his ball up the slope.
