Samir Shah, the incoming chair of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) told British Members of Parliament on Wednesday (Dec 13) that the tweets made by sports presenter Gary Lineker mocking Conservative Party MPs broke th news corporation's social media guidelines. Shah told the committee of MPs that the tweets appeared to be breaching the rules “on the face of it”.

Lineker had elicited praise as well as rebuke for signing a letter that urged the British government to scrap its deportation to Rwanda policy for illegal asylum seekers crossing the English Channel on boats. Along with Lineker, many other celebrities had signed the letter.

UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps subsequently told Lineker to "stick to football commentary". Lineker was also accused by Jonathan Gullis, a Conservative Party MP, of breaching BBC guidelines.

Lineker shot back at Shapps on X (formerly Twitter) the minister's images which purportedly showed him using three names: Michael Green, Corinne Stockheath and Sebastian Fox

“A tad rich coming from someone who can’t even stick to one name. 4 chaps Shapps,” said Lineker's post.

Shapps has previously denied claims that he was using these names.

Lineker also shot back at Gullis saying, “Jonathan hasn’t read the new guidelines….or, should I say, had someone read them to him?”

This was taken as an attempt to call Gullis illiterate.

<h2>Lineker's comments 'not very helpful'</h2>

On Wednesday, Shah told the committee of MPs that Lineker's comments “seem to breach those guidelines”.

“I don’t think it was very helpful either for Gary Lineker or the BBC or the cause he supports because it becomes a story about Gary Lineker and the BBC.” he said as quoted by The Independent.

“As far as I’m aware, the signing of the letter did not breach those guidelines," Shah said.

“But the more recent tweet in which he identifies a politician does, on the face of it, seem to breach those guidelines. I’m not sure how egregious it is but I imagine the BBC is looking into it and considering its response.”

When the committee asked Shah what would he have done in this situation if he was BBC Chairman.

“I think it’s our duty to monitor and see how well guidelines are delivering their purpose,” said Shah.

Shah also said that he would invite Tim Davie, Director-General of the BBC to “interrogate quite forcibly” to see if the social media guidelines were having the effect they are designed to have.

Former British cabinet ministers&nbsp;Matt Hancock&nbsp;and Kwasi Kwarteng were among the top Tory lawmakers who were duped into offering their services for up to 10,000 pounds by a fake South Korean firm, amidst a row over MPs taking second jobs.

This revelation came to the fore after a sting operation set up by a group called ‘Led By Donkeys’. A seven-minute video of the operation was shared on Twitter titled "MPs FOR HIRE: a Led By Donkeys undercover investigation".

Local reports said that the bogus firm approached the politicians and had a rudimentary foreign website with fake testimonials.

According to British media, MPs are permitted to seek employment outside of Parliament. While no accusation is being made, there is increased scrutiny of politicians’ outside earnings.

In the video, both Kwarteng and Hancock could be seen quoting a fee for their services in a video call with the representative of the fake company.

While Kwarteng agreed in principle to be paid the daily rate after saying he did not require a “king’s ransom”, Hancock quoted 10,000 sterling after being asked his daily rate.

Another Tory MP, Sir Graham Brady—the chair of the 1922 Committee—also attended the online meeting from his parliamentary office, according to Guardian newspaper.

When he was asked about the limits on arranging meetings, Brady made it clear that he could not advocate on behalf of the interest, but said he may be able to advise the firm on who to approach in government.

He said a rate of about £6,000 a day “feels about right” and any payments would be on a public register.

A fourth MP, former minister Stephen Hammond, acknowledged that he was also approached by this fake firm. But he didn’t engage with them sensing that it was a scam.

He said he thought he was engaged in a preliminary discussion with a company but “it turns out this company was fake, with a fake website”.

Hancock’s spokesperson told Guardian that he had acted “entirely properly” and criticised what he described as the “illegal publication of a private conversation”.

Meanwhile, the Home Office has warned MPs to be on their guard against the “threat of foreign interference”, and the group’s investigation demonstrated the ease with which they seemed able to gain access to the MPs.

UK: Tory MPs tricked into offering their services for fake South Korean firm

Barely four months have passed since his ascension and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is already facing a potential rebellion from the Tory MPs over the post-Brexit arrangements.

According to Guardian, 100 MPs have expressed their disapproval of a deal with the European Union to help break the post-Brexit deadlock in Northern Ireland.

Hardline Brexit supporters within the Conservative party are reportedly suspicious of concessions made by the UK.

It comes following an intervention from his predecessor Boris Johnson who was against Sunak's plans of abandoning the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill that grants powers to ministers to ignore EU rules and rip up parts of the protocol.

"His general thinking is that it would be a great mistake to drop the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill," a source close to Johnson told Sky News.

The source said that if there is a deal then the bill introduced by Johnson when he was PM would become redundant.

&nbsp;"If we can find a way to satisfactorily resolve the issues with the protocol, then you wouldn't need the bill," the official was quoted as saying. "But we haven't resolved them yet."

According to reports, the UK leader is expected to meet European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference on Saturday.

Both are likely to discuss the final contours of an agreement to replace the current trading arrangements. He is also likely to meet the leaders of France and Germany.

Leader of the Democratic Unionist party Jeffrey Donaldson has said that Sunak’s proposal “currently falls short of what would be acceptable” to the party, adding that it failed to adhere to its longstanding red lines.
