<p>Tiger Woods ruled himself out on Tuesday of playing in the US Open as he recovers from right ankle surgery, organisers said.</p>

<p>The 47-year-old 15-time major champion -- which includes three US Open crowns -- underwent further surgery in April on his ankle, which was severely injured in a car accident in 2021.</p>

<p>The US Open, the third of the four majors, runs June 15-18 at the Los Angeles Country Club's North Course.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Woods most recently competed at the Masters in April but he withdrew early in the third round and it was then decided that he would undergo another operation.</p>

<p>"Tiger Woods, who won this championship in 2000, 2002 and 2008, has withdrawn as an exempt player while still recovering from his recent surgery," read the statement from organisers.</p>

<p>Woods battled to make the cut at Augusta National but was visibly limping at times on the storied course where he has won five times.</p>

<p>Woods has competed in just five tournaments since his February 2021 car crash near Los Angeles, completing 72 holes only twice.</p>

<p>He played four rounds in his surprise return to golf at last year's Masters and at the Genesis Invitational PGA Tour event at Riviera Country Club in February.</p>

<p>He reiterated at Riviera that his competitive schedule would be extremely limited, saying he hoped to play in all four majors and perhaps "a couple" of other events.</p>

<p>At Augusta he acknowledged that he wonders each time he plays the Masters if it will be his last time there.</p>

<p>"I don't know how many more I have in me," he said, adding that he felt "very lucky" to still have his right leg.</p>

<p>"It has been tough and will always be tough. The ability and endurance of what my leg will do going forward will never be the same. That's why I can't prepare and play as many tournaments as I like.</p>

<p>Woods, in his second start after a car crash 15 months ago nearly cost him his right leg, appeared dejected and in pain as he trudged off the 18th green at Southern Hill Country Club.</p>

<p>Asked if he would be back for Sunday's fourth round, Woods was non-committal. He officially announced his withdrawal about five hours after his finish.</p>

<p>“Tiger Woods has informed us that he is withdrawing from the 2022 PGA Championship," PGA of America President Jim Richerson said in a statement. "We admire Tiger’s valiant effort to compete here at Southern Hills and wish him the best as he continues to recover from his injuries.”</p>

<p>The last time Woods withdrew from a tournament was in 2019 prior to the second round of the Northern Trust.</p>

<p>It is the first time he has withdrawn from a major since the U.S. Open in 1995.</p>

<p>Reigning Masters champion Tiger Woods struggled with back issues on his way to a four-over par 76 on Friday, but avoided missing the cut at the Memorial tournament for the first time.</p>

<p>The 44-year-old superstar, playing his first PGA event since February after a tour shutdown in March over the coronavirus pandemic, had never missed the cut in 17 prior starts at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.</p>

<p>But the 15-time major winner, whose total ranks second only to the 18 won by Memorial host Jack Nicklaus, made five bogeys and a double-bogey against three birdies in round two after an opening 71 on Thursday and had a long afternoon wait to know that record would remain intact.</p>

<p>"Not very good," Woods said. "I 3-putted two holes early. Whatever momentum I was going to create, I stifled that early and struggled the rest of the day."</p>

<p>Woods said his back began bothering him when he was warming up before the round, noting, "It's going to happen more times than not these days."</p>

<p>His back, which like his knees has been surgically repaired multiple times, affected his swing, saying, "It was a bit of a struggle."</p>

<p>Woods had not played since February at Riviera and the back issues come with the year's first major in a COVID-19 shuffled schedule coming on August 6-9 at the PGA Championship at Harding Park in San Francisco.</p>

<p>Woods stood on three-over par 147 after 36 holes, just on the projected cut line as the last players teed off in the round.</p>

<p>"I would like to have the opportunity to play tomorrow," Woods said. "Hopefully the cut will fall one more and I'll have the opportunity."</p>

<p>Woods, who began Friday on the back nine, put his approach to three feet at the par-3 12th and made birdie, but missed a three-foot par putt at 13 and sent his first three shots into the rough on the way to a bogey at the par-5 15th.</p>

<p>World number 14 Woods found a fairway bunker and needed four shots to reach the green on his way to a bogey at 17 then made a double bogey at the first to begin his second nine of the day.</p>

<p>Bogeys at the par-4 second and sixth holes followed before Woods bounced back with birdies at the par-5 seventh and par-3 eighth. But he needed three shots to reach the green and a seven-foot putt to salvage par at the last -- enough to make the halfway cut on the number at 3-over par.</p>
