The Indian government has tabled Telecommunications bill 2023 in the lower house of the parliament, The Union cabinet approved the bill in August 2023. The bill will replace the colonial era Indian Telegraph Act.

In the interest of maintaining national security, the government may take control of, manage, or halt any or all telecommunications services or networks, according to the draft Telecommunications Bill, 2023, which was presented to the Lok Sabha on Monday. The 138-year-old Indian Telegraph Act, which now regulates the telecom industry, is intended to be replaced by the Telecommunications Bill, 2023.
