The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) users across India faced inconvenience and were unable to complete their payments and fund transfers since Saturday morning, after the services were disrupted due to a technical snag for the third time in three weeks.
UPI, an instant real-time payment system developed by NPCI to facilitate interbank transactions through mobile phones, has become extremely popular, and the disruption of its services left thousands of users in a bother.
Users of digital payment apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm were unable to complete their transactions.
DownDetector, a platform that monitors outages, reported as many as 2,147 complaints by 12.56 pm, with nearly 80% of users saying they experienced issues.&nbsp; The disruption also impacted a broad range of financial institutions and major banks like HDFC Bank, State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, and Kotak Mahindra Bank.

On March 26, digital transactions were hit due to a widespread UPI outage, with a large number of users reporting problems in the instant payment interface. &ldquo;NPCI had faced intermittent technical issues owing to which UPI had partial decline. The same has been addressed now and the system has stabilised. Regret the inconvenience,&rdquo; the regulator had said in an X post. On April 2 also, payments via UPI were affected.

UPI has become a transformational product in digital payments and continues to break monthly transaction records but the pace of growth is slowing as the user base has widened. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), UPI accounted for 83% of total payment volumes by the end of 2024, up from 34% in 2019, while the share of other payment modes like RTGS, NEFT, IMPS, credit cards and debit cards dropped from 66% to 17%.
Meanwhile, earlier in the week, the NPCI had announced a policy update for international UPI payments. Effective April 8, the use of QR codes for transactions outside India has been restricted to enhance payer identification. The domestic QR code payments remain unaffected.
UPI users vented their feelings on social media, as one said, "Nothing &ldquo;partial&rdquo; about this. The failure is complete and across the board!"
Another said, &ldquo;Being a retailer, when UPI payments are down, it becomes very difficult. Lost quite a lot of weekend business due to this.&rdquo;

UPI services hit by third outage in three weeks, thousands of users report difficulties

Thousands of passengers with flight tickets in the United Kingdom are facing cancellations and long delays after the country's air traffic control systems encountered a “technical issue”, which has been fixed. 
 
People have been stranded in the UK and abroad after the number of planes landing was limited by the National Air Traffic Services. The airports and airlines warned the passengers that they were likely to face more "significant delays" even though the officials fixed the issue within hours. 
 
Speaking to BBC News, one passenger said that her afternoon flight was not likely to leave till after midnight. Warnings have been issued that people are likely to face some knock-on disruption for days.

Delays of around 12 hours after takeoffs, suspension of inbound flights due to a “network-wide” computer failure and cancellations were faced by returning holidaymakers and those planning to fly out from UK airports. 
 
The technical snag had forced controllers to input flight plans manually which led to the cancellation of 500 flights and delay of other flights even before Nats, which is the national airspace controller, declared at 3.15 pm local time that it had “identified and remedied” the technical issue after four hours.

<h2>Returning to normal operations</h2>

As per flight tracking sites, the flights were delayed from 11:30 am. The problem was confirmed by Nats at around 12:10 pm local time when it stated that it was “currently experiencing a technical issue” and had “applied traffic flow restrictions to maintain safety”. 
 
After stating that the original issues had been fixed, Nats stated, “We are now working closely with airlines and airports to manage the flights affected as efficiently as possible. Our engineers will be carefully monitoring the system’s performance as we return to normal operations.” 
 
“Our priority is always to ensure that every flight in the UK remains safe and we are sincerely sorry for the disruption this is causing. Please contact your airline for information on how this may affect your flight,” it added.

Late on Monday evening, Heathrow said that the flight schedules remain disrupted and hence, people should reach out to the airlines before leaving for the airport. 
 
Heathrow spokesperson said that the schedules would “remain significantly disrupted for the rest of the day”. “We ask passengers to only travel to the airport if their flight is confirmed as still operating. Teams across Heathrow are working as hard as they can to minimise the knock-on impacts and assist those whose journeys have been affected,” he added.&nbsp;

India's space agency called off the launch of its second lunar mission, Chandrayaan-2, less than an hour before the scheduled take off on Monday (July 15) due to a "technical snag." "It was snag of autopilot mode and pilot shifted to manual mode and landed safely. Such autopilot incidents are not uncommon," the DGCA said in a statement.

It added that for any VIP flight, the DGCA examines all the issues in details and will do the same in this case also.

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi's aide Kaushal Vidyarthee sent a complaint letter to Karnataka Director General of Police and Inspector General of Police Neelamani N. Raju and demanded to investigate the incident and ground the aircraft till the investigation is completed.

The complainant said that several "unexplained technical errors" happened during the course of the two-hour morning flight and demanded a thorough investigation.

"Serious questions related to intentional tampering with the aircraft cannot also be brushed aside and are required to be addressed and investigated," the complainant demanded.&nbsp;
