A group of women from Maryland, US, have challenged a ban on topless sunbathing. The petitioners are asking the Supreme Court to review a law that allows men to show skin but bans women from doing the same.

As per the petitioners, the court is so preoccupied with “protecting traditional moral sensibilities” that it permits “discrimination against all women.”&nbsp;

In 2017, Ocean City had passed a law banning women from exposing their skin at the beach after one of their plaintiffs, Chelsea Eline, complained to local authorities that she had a right to go topless.&nbsp;

According to a report by The Associated Press, Judge A. Marvin Quattlebaum, also one of the panel members said that Ocean City is within their rights to impose such a ban to protect “public sensibilities."

The court had also denied a request to rehear the case.

Chief judge Roger Gregory said that the court should reconsider its decision. Gregory wrote, "At first glance, Ocean City’s ordinance seems innocuous enough … But we must take care not to let our analysis be confined by the limits of our social lens. Suppose the ordinance defined nudity to include public exposure of a woman’s hair, neck, shoulders, or ankles. Would that law not run afoul of the Equal Protection Clause?"

The petition was filed on December 1 and the court can respond till January 7.&nbsp;

The Supreme Court on Friday sought the centre&rsquo;s reply on a plea seeking live streaming of cases of &#39;&#39;constitutional and national importance that could have an impact on the public.&#39;&#39;

A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra also sought the assistance of Attorney General K K Venugopal on the matter.

The Bench comprising Chief justices Dipak Misra, AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud passed the order after hearing Senior Advocate Indira Jaising and advocate Mathews Nedumpara, the petitioners in the matter.

Jaising, in her petition, sought live streaming of court proceedings in cases that are of &#39;&#39;constitutional and national importance having an impact on the public at large or a large number of people.&#39;&#39;&nbsp;

The petition said live streaming of cases of constitutional and national importance would empower and provide access to &#39;&#39;ordinary citizens&#39;&#39; who cannot personally go to the court due to social and economic constraints, even though the decision would impact them.

She said that the court could consider laying down guidelines governing the same.

Enabling citizens to understand the reasoning in cases affecting their rights forms part of their right to dignity and is an intrinsic value of their right to be heard under Article 21 (Right to Life) of the Constitution, the petition added.

The petition referred to courts dealing with issues of environment, triple talaq, air pollution, ban on liquor to avoid deaths on national highways, ban on firecrackers to prevent air and noise pollution and extrajudicial killings, all of which affect the public who do not get to see how decisions are made by the court.

The petition also quotes how other jurisdictions including, those of Canada, Australia, the UK, New Zealand, South Africa, the European Court of Human Rights and the International Criminal Court, permit varying degrees of recording court proceedings.

When the matter came up for hearing today, advocate Mathews Nedumpara made his submissions and sought the recording of proceedings in all courts.

Israel&#39;s Supreme Court has ruled that Franz Kafka&#39;s manuscripts are the property of the National Library of Israel, ending a lengthy legal battle, judicial sources said in Monday. 
 
The nation&#39;s top court on Sunday rejected an appeal by the heirs of Max Brod, a friend of Kafka and the executor of his estate to whom he had willed his manuscripts after his death in 1924. 
 
Kafka had instructed Brod to burn the manuscripts after his death but his friend did not honour that request and took them with him when he fled the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1939 and emigrated to Palestine. 
 
On his death in 1968, Brod bequeathed the papers to his secretary Esther Hoffe, with instructions to give them to the &quot;Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the municipal library in Tel Aviv or another organisation in Israel or abroad.&quot; 
 
But Hoffe, who died in 2007, instead kept them and shared them between her two daughters -- sparking multiple legal battles. 
 
In the trial against Hoffe&#39;s heirs, which began in 2009, the state of Israel demanded they hand over all the documents, which included unpublished writings, arguing it was Brod&#39;s last will. 
 
Hoffe&#39;s daughters refused, however, saying the papers -- estimated to be worth millions of dollars -- had been given to their mother by Brod and therefore she could dispose of them any way she wanted. 
 
 
 
Hoffe had during her lifetime sold the original manuscript of &quot;The Trial&quot; -- considered by some to be one of Kafka&#39;s best work -- for $2 million. 
 
The Hoffe family kept the bulk of the collection locked away in bank safety deposit boxes in Israel and Switzerland and over the years sold some papers to collectors.

Yemen&#39;s government delegation to UN-brokered peace talks in Kuwait said it will leave on Saturday, signalling the collapse of four months of UN-brokered negotiations with Shiite Huthi rebels.

UN special envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said the rebels&#39; move &quot;contravenes&quot; their commitment to the peace process and &quot;represents a grave violation&quot; of UN Security Council Resolution 2216 on Yemen&#39;s conflict. 
 
A UN spokesman in Kuwait, however, said Ould Cheikh Ahmed was scheduled to meet with the rebels later on Friday, and with ambassadors of the 18 countries backing the peace process in Yemen. Indirect negotiations held in Kuwait since April have failed to make headway. Most of the discussions focused on the type of the government to run Yemen during a transition period.
