A virus that has killed superworms across the United States has been discovered by scientists at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. The discovery has been reported in an article in Cell. The Zophobas morio black wasting virus has been named after a species of darkling beetle, Zophobas morio, as it has a deadly effect on these insects. The beetle, during its larval stage, appears as large, brown superworms as it emerges from the eggs. They were called “superworm” because the two-inch-long-larvae are bigger than others that are grown as feed.

Jason Kaelber, study author and an associate research professor at the Institute for Quantitative Biomedicine (IQB) at Rutgers-New Brunswick, made the discovery by coming together with Judit Penzes, the first author of the study and a postdoctoral associate at IQB.

Over a year ago, beetle farm owners contacted Penzes because the superworms were mysteriously dying. A molecular virologist, Penzes had earlier isolated a virus that was killing crickets.

She started collecting superworms at pet stores in New Jersey. She went to the feeder insect sections of the stores and checked out the worms. “They were all infected. I told the owners of the stores what I was seeing that I was researching this virus, and asked if I could have the container. They were immediately on board. They told me to take as many as I needed.”

She brought them back to the lab and blended them up. She then processed this slurry of beetle juice using a virus purification method that separates the virus out. Then when she focused a fluorescent light, the virus glowed blue.

“I said, ‘I got you,’ when I saw it,” Penzes said. “I knew then it was, indeed, a virus.”

To learn more about the virus, she worked with Kaelber and examined the virus using a cryo-electron microscope. Upon further inspection, they found that the virus is similar to the one affecting cockroaches, but not identical.

“It’s a new one, different from anything that’s been sequenced or imaged before,” Penzes said.

The two are now devising a vaccine after testing a way to protect the Z. morio beetles from disease.

The study was published in the journal Microbial Genomics on Thursday. Chris Rinke, who was leading the study, told AFP that the worms had an impressive performance history when it came to feeding on plastic.&nbsp;

The team of scientists also attempted to find which gene-encoded enzymes of the worms were involved in degrading the plastic and analyze the microbial gut community using a technique called metagenomics.

During the course of the study, Rinke and his team fed superworms over a three-week period with different diets. Some worms were given polystyrene foam, also known as styrofoam, a few were given bran, and others were not given anything.

"We confirmed that superworms can survive on a sole polystyrene diet and even gain a small amount of weight compared to a starvation control group, which suggests that the worms can gain energy from eating polystyrene," AFP quoted Chris Rinke as saying.

The findings of the study suggest that while superworms can survive on Polystyrene and complete their life cycles as adult beetles, tests reveal that it could result in a loss of microbial diversity in their guts and potential pathogens.

The findings of the study can be put to use by providing superworms with food waste or agricultural bioproducts to be consumed alongside Polystyrene, Rinke told AFP.

"This could be a way to improve the health of the worms and to deal with the large amount of food waste in Western countries," he added.&nbsp;

Although breeding more superworms for the purpose of up-cycling is possible, Rinke holds another plan which involves creating recycling plants that have the ability to replicate what the larvae do, that is, firstly shredding the plastic in their mouths and then ultimately digesting it through enzymes.&nbsp;

"Ultimately, we want to take the superworms out of the equation," AFP quoted Rinke. Rinke plans to research more regarding the most efficient enzymes to enhance them further through enzyme engineering.&nbsp;

The scientists envision that the breakdown products from these enhanced enzymes can later be fed to other microbes, which can potentially create high-value compounds, such as bioplastics, which they hope would become an economically viable approach to up-cycling.

"My ambition is for worms to be a successful food alternative for humans," he told AFP.&nbsp;

Insects are widely eaten around the globe, with an estimated 1,000 species appearing on the dinner plates of some two billion people in Africa, Asia and Latin America.&nbsp;

But apart from traditional diets, cricket pasta and mealworm smoothies have become the latest food trend in some world capitals, with edible insects being promoted as a sustainable alternative to regular protein sources.&nbsp;

Some Gulf states have a tradition of eating dried and baked locusts, which can appear in plague proportions. They are considered a delicacy by some, although consumption has fallen out of favour in modern times.&nbsp;

While superworms, in high demand among owners of birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles, have not yet been approved for human consumption in Kuwait, Buabbas is hopeful that people will be willing to try them.&nbsp;

He aims to expand his business beyond the pet trade and get the invertebrates onto dinner plates, in what would be the first such restaurant in the Gulf.&nbsp;

He is now experimenting with recipes before seeking permission from the Kuwaiti authorities.&nbsp;

"I have so far created three types of sauces... and colleagues of mine have tried and liked them," said Buabbas, who apart from breeding superworms works in the government sector.&nbsp;

Regulation is catching up with the food trend in May, the European Commission approved dried mealworms for human consumption after the 27-nation bloc's food watchdog said they were safe to eat.&nbsp;

The decision was good news for the burgeoning insect farming industry in Europe.&nbsp;

Buabbas said a fascination with the secrets of superworms prompted him to travel to Thailand in 2018 to learn more about the animals, which are a popular snack there.&nbsp;

"At first, I was disgusted by them, but... then I got used to the worms, understanding their behaviour and what poses a danger to them," he told AFP.&nbsp;

He spends two hours with the creatures every day, feeding them oats, bran, potatoes and carrots, as well as tweaking humidity and temperature levels.&nbsp;

He usually produces between 3,000 and 6,000 worms every three months, and at times up to 10,000.&nbsp;

The superworms take about 90 days to mature enough to be ready for sale, each weighing approximately a gram at six centimetres (two inches) long. They fetch $3 for 25 larvae.&nbsp;

Buabbas said the superworm business has been lucrative, with bird-breeder customers buying thousands of dollars worth at a time to feed their cardinals and nightingales.&nbsp;

Before borders closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, he would transport boxes of worms to other Gulf countries, especially Saudi Arabia.&nbsp;

Buabbas markets his business on social media, while he works on superworm recipes that he says will incorporate elements of local cuisine.&nbsp;

But when asked how they tasted, he said he didn't know. He's never tried them.&nbsp;
