Women and girls as young as nine were raped by Sudan's RSF, which is engaged in conflict with Sudan Armed Forces, also engaged in sexual violence, since the conflict broke out in 2023, according to a report by Human Rights Watch.

Both RSF or Rapid Support Forces and SAF&nbsp;engaged in rape, gang rape, and other forms of sexual violence of girls and women aged up to 60. RSF appears to have been the worst perpetrators when compared to SAF, according to the HRW report released on Sunday (July 28).

HRW was able to document at least 262 survivors of sexual violence since the conflict broke out.

According to survivors, many were gang-raped by up to four RSF fighters, in some cases, in front of family members.

"RSF members sexually assaulted women and girls in front of their family members," said the report, particularly noting a case where a mother and her four daughters were raped "repeatedly for days" in front of their father and brothers after putting them under house arrest.

The rights group cited a lawyer who received “reports of rape of six girls, one girl aged 9 years old” and a psychologist who said out of over&nbsp;25 survivor cases he recorded, “at least 80 per cent were aged between 12 and 18."

Men and boys have also been victims of sexual violence, it said.

The conflict-related sexual violence in the impoverished African country was recorded by the rights group from interviews with healthcare professionals, psychiatrists and other care providers&nbsp;in the capital of Khartoum Bahri and Omdurman cities.

<h2>Forced child marriages</h2>

"Women and girls have also been subjected to forced marriage and child marriage," the rights body said in the report, which was compiled&nbsp;based on interviews conducted between September 2023 and February 2024.

The HRW report claimed that RSF forced some women and children into marriage in Khartoum.&nbsp;

A paramilitary attack on a village in central Sudan on Thursday (June 6) resulted in up to 100 deaths.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have been at war with the regular army since April 2023, attacked the village of Wad al-Noura in al-Jazira state twice with heavy artillery on Wednesday (June 5), said the Madani Resistance Committee.

The committee said the feared paramilitaries attacked the village, causing widespread displacement and casualties.

The committee shared footage on social media, calling it a mass grave in the public square, showing rows of white shrouds laid out in a courtyard.

Over a year, the war has killed tens of thousands of people, including up to 15,000 in&nbsp;West Darfur town alone.

The war's actual death toll remains unclear. US special envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello, cited estimates as high as "150,000."

The RSF has repeatedly laid siege to and attacked entire villages across Sudan, particularly in the agricultural state of Al-Jazira.

As per a United Nations estimate released on Tuesday, the fighting has caused more than 330,000 people to flee their homes within the country, and over 100,000 people have crossed into neighbouring countries. The numbers are only expected to rise.

Briefing the press in Geneva, UNHCR spokesperson Olga Sarrado said that "over 100,000 refugees are estimated to be among those who have now fled Sudan to neighbouring countries, including Sudanese refugees, South Sudanese returning home prematurely, and others who were themselves refugees in Sudan."

The number of internally displaced people as per the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) stands at an estimated 334,000. As per a situation report released by the agency: "the total estimate of displaced individuals across Sudan has reached 334,053".

IOM spokesperson Paul Dillon, as per Reuters, revealed that the number of people displaced in the last two weeks has exceeded "all conflict-related displacement in Sudan in 2022."

"About 72 per cent, roughly 240,000 of these new internal displacements were reported in West and South Darfur alone," he told reporters.

"In many cases, the small convoys are in a sense running the gauntlet between warring factions and it's an extremely difficult and dangerous situation for those who are embarking on these journeys," said Dillon.

The UN also stated that its 2023 aid appeals for Sudan have fallen short by around $1.5 billion and were only 14 per cent funded. "The $1.75 billion joint appeal for Sudan in 2023 is only 14 per cent funded. In other words ... (it is) facing a funding gap of $1.5 billion," said the UN humanitarian agency's spokesperson Jens Laerke.

The ongoing armed conflict between two generals — General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Chief General Mohamed Hamdan Dagaloofof the paramilitary group RSF — began on April 15th. It has already crossed into the third week, and since it started, the conflict has resulted in the death of at least 528 people. Sudan: 100,000 refugees have fled into neighbouring countries, number could rise to 800,000 - UN

More than 500 people have been killed since battles erupted on April 15 between the forces of army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his number two Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who commands the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), AFP news agency reports.

In Khartoum, which houses around five million people, gunfire and artillery fire continued to persist as thousands of residents tried to flee the capital city due to massive shortages of food, water, and electricity.

The situation was no different in other parts of the country where thousands of people have been uprooted from their place and forced to go on arduous trips to neighbouring Chad, Egypt, South Sudan and Ethiopia to flee the battles.

According to the United Nations (UN), more than 50,000 Sudanese refugees&nbsp;— mostly women and children — have crossed over to Chad, Egypt, South Sudan and the Central African Republic, amidst fears of regional instability.

Whereas around 75,000 have been displaced by the fighting in Khartoum and the states of Blue Nile, North Kordofan, as well as the western region of Darfur, the UN said.

Ethnic fighting and turmoil have scarred South Sudan and the Central African Republic for years while a 2021 coup has derailed Chad's own democratic transition.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres rued over the continued violence.

"There is no right to go on fighting for power when the country is falling apart," Antonio Guterres told Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television.

Despite agreeing to multiple truces, both forces have remained steadfast in their resolve even as civilian casualties continued to mount.

The recent three-day ceasefire —due to expire at midnight (2200 GMT) Sunday —was agreed on Thursday after it was brokered by the United States, Saudi Arabia, the African Union and the United Nations.

UN chief Guterres called for African-led mediation efforts for an ever-lasting peace in the conflict-torn country.

"My appeal is for everything to be done to support an African-led initiative for peace in Sudan," he told Al Arabiya.

The fighting has also triggered a mass exodus of foreigners and international staff.

Britons blocked from boarding rescue flights

According to the Guardian newspaper, thousands of British nations are stranded in Sudan after they were prevented by the country’s armed forces from reaching the last rescue flights out of the war-torn country on Saturday.

It was announced that 1,888 people on 21 flights have been evacuated from Sudan – the vast majority of them British nationals and their dependents – but the last flight was yet to leave despite being scheduled to depart at 6 pm.

The Conservative chair of the foreign affairs select committee, Alicia Kearns, told the&nbsp;newspaper that she had received information that elements of the Sudanese Armed Forces had blocked British nationals as they attempted to navigate the treacherous route to an airbase north of Khartoum.
