The United Kingdom Secretary of State for the Home Department Suella Braverman has proposed a plan to “reform” the Graduate Visa route which has been “strongly opposed” by the Department for Education (DoE), says a report published in the Times on Wednesday (January 25). The reports suggest that if introduced, the reform would cut the period of stay allowed for international students under the aforementioned visa route.&nbsp;

The report citing the country’s education department sources said they are attempting to block these changes as they would make the UK less attractive to overseas students. The current Graduate Visa route requires students to procure a work visa by getting a skilled job or leave Britain in six months after they graduate.

The DoE has also argued that the two-year Graduate Visa also known as the UK’s post-study offer was designed with most of Britain’s competitors, reported PTI citing the Times.&nbsp;

However, the reports also noted that Braverman’s proposal is just one of many which are being put forth after UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak asked the British Home Office and the DoE to submit plans on reducing the number of international students coming to the country.&nbsp;

The latest statistics by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that Indians have taken over the number of Chinese as the largest cohort of foreign students last year. This uptick has been attributed to the aforementioned visa route, introduced two years ago and consequently Indian students dominated with 41 per cent of the visas granted.&nbsp;

The statistics published last week also showed that there are 680,000 foreign students in the UK while the government’s 2019 Higher Education Strategy had targeted to reduce the number of overseas students to 600,000 by 2030. Notably, they achieved this target last year.&nbsp;

To attract the "brightest and best" early in their careers, the United Kingdom will offer work visas to graduates from the world's best universities, including India. The move is said to be the expansion of the UK's post-Brexit immigration system. Under a new visa scheme, graduates from the world's top 50 non-UK universities can now come and work in the country through a new High Potential Individual (HPI) visa route, which was launched in London on Monday (May 30). Notably, applicants must have been awarded degrees not more than five years before the date of application. Rishi Sunak, who is the finance minister of the UK, mentioned that such policies would help the country to grow as an international hub for innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship.&nbsp;

To be applicable for the same, a person must have graduated with a bachelor's or master's degree from the top 50 universities, which appeared in the top 50 of at least two of the following: Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings or The Academic Ranking of World Universities. The appearance in the top 50 must be in the year in which they graduated.&nbsp;

The applicants can opt for a two-year work visa and those who receive doctorates can apply for a three-year visa. It is mentioned that they will be allowed to bring family members with them. The government said that the successful applicants will then be able to switch to longer-term employment visas.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, international students, including Indians, who are studying in the UK at any of the top universities are already eligible to stay for up to three years through the Graduate visa "popularly referred to as a post-study work visa" opened in July last year, India-based news agency PTI reported.&nbsp;

The Guardian cited a survey to report that international students would be more likely to "consider studying in the UK if they were allowed to stay and work for three years instead of two".&nbsp;

The report added that such an extension would be especially appealing to Indian students. It was also noted that the number of Indian students choosing to study in the UK fell dramatically after the abolition of the two-year post-study work visa in 2012. The numbers have quadrupled since it was reinstated, which is a huge difference.&nbsp;

Post-Brexit scenario&nbsp;

Since leaving European Union (EU), Britain has ended the priority given to EU citizens. The nation has introduced a points-based immigration system that ranks applicants on everything from their qualifications and language skills to the type of job offered to them.&nbsp;

But the country has faced a tight labour market for several years, which has gotten worse due to Brexit and COVID-19.&nbsp;

The companies in manufacturing, logistics and the food sector have urged the government to loosen the rules for entry-level jobs.&nbsp;
