<p>Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah has come out in defence of Article 35A of the Constitution which grants the J&amp;K Assembly special rights to decide on the permanent residents of the state.</p>

<p>Abdullah said that the abrogation of Article 35A of the Constitution will end the state subject laws which were initiated by the erstwhile Maharaja, Hari Singh.</p>

<p>&quot;Provisions which are stated under article 35 (A) were initiated by Raja Hari Singh. If this is scrapped by the Supreme Court, it will end state subject laws. People from other states will gain access to buy property in the region, avail educational scholarships for their children, relief material and bag government jobs; the four main things that Raja Hari Singh protected us from,&quot; said Abdullah, while addressing a gathering in Jammu, the winter capital of the state.</p>

<p>The working president of the state&#39;s main opposition party, National Conference, said that the scrapping of Article 35A won&#39;t benefit anybody. He accused the ruling Bharatiya Janta Party of making it a Jammu vs Kashmir issue.<br />

<p>Abdullah also said that the Hurriyat had no business commenting on Article 35A as it does not believe in the Indian Constitution.</p>
