The eerie red lights, which were glowing in the atmosphere of the Earth and above the coast of South Africa, were captured by a NASA astronaut from a window aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

On June 21, NASA's SpaceX Crew-8 mission commander Matthew Dominick captured the mesmerising image. The red glowing light was actually a sudden flash of a weather phenomenon called 'red sprite' lightning.

Red sprites are said to flash above thunderclouds in the upper atmosphere, known as the mesosphere, which extends up to 53 miles (85 kilometres) above the surface.

In the image, blood-red bursts of energy were seen shining above the coast of South Africa. &nbsp;

Red sprites are a type of electrical bursts of light which are formed above the highly active thunderstorms.

These are found in the D region of the ionosphere, which is the area above the dense lower atmosphere nearly 37 to 56 miles from the Earth.

Twelve&nbsp;children&nbsp;were killed in South Africa on Wednesday when a minibus taking them to school near Johannesburg&nbsp;overturned and caught fire after being hit by another vehicle, authorities said.

The driver of the minibus was also killed and seven other&nbsp;children&nbsp;were rushed to hospital, according to officials in Johannesburg's Gauteng province.&nbsp;

Television images showed that the minibus was totally destroyed by the fire in the early morning crash in Merafong, more than 70 kilometres (45 miles) west of the city.&nbsp;

Charred schoolbook pages were scattered on the tarmac, as police examined the scene. &nbsp;

"A private scholar transport minibus was involved in a tragic accident in the Kokosi-Wedela area in Merafong, claiming the lives of the 12 learners and their driver," the Gauteng government said in a statement.&nbsp;

It could not immediately give the ages of the&nbsp;children&nbsp;but said most were from a primary school, where students are normally aged between six and 13.

"Seven other learners have been rushed to a medical facility for urgent medical attention," it added.

Police were investigating what happened but it appeared that the minibus was struck from behind by a small pick-up truck, causing it to overturn and subsequently catch fire, authorities said. .&nbsp;

"I am profoundly saddened by this tragic event," Gauteng education minister Matome Chiloane said.

"The loss of our&nbsp;children&nbsp;is a devastating blow to our community, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and injured learners".

School bus crash kills 12 children in South Africa, driver loses life as well

Findings from a breakthrough clinical trial conducted in South Africa and Uganda have claimed that biannual injection of a new pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) drug gives young women total protection from HIV infection.

As many as 5,000 participants were enrolled for the study, sponsored by Gilead Sciences,&nbsp;at three sites in Uganda and 25 sites in South Africa to test the&nbsp;efficacy of Lenacapavir and two other drugs.

"Lenacapavir (Len LA) is a fusion capside inhibitor. It interferes with the HIV capsid, a protein shell that protects HIV’s genetic material and enzymes needed for replication. It is administered just under the skin, once every six months,"&nbsp;Physician-scientist Linda-Gail Bekker, principal investigator for the South African part of the study told The Coversation.&nbsp;

Apart from&nbsp;Lenacapavir, the trial also tested Truvada - a daily PrEP pill in wide use for more than a decade and Descovy, a newer pill, used for the same purpose.&nbsp;

During the randomised trial, none of the 2,314 women who received the injection of&nbsp;Lenacapavir contracted HIV, which suggested the efficacy was 100 per cent.&nbsp;

Meanwhile,&nbsp;16 of 1,068 women who received Truvada and 39 of 2,136&nbsp;who received Descovy contracted the HIV virus.

South Africa and Afghanistan are bracing to lock horns on Thursday (June 27) in the first semi-final of the 2024 T20 World Cup. The match, set to take place at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba in Trinidad, will be extremely crucial for both the teams to create history by making their first-ever T20 WC final appearance.

With their outstanding performance in the tournament, South Africa have reached the semi-final undefeated. Afghanistan, on the other hand, have been scripting a fairytale run with their triumph over Bangladesh.

However, all eyes are on an intermittent spoilsport- the weather, as predictions mount up over rains impacting the fixture, in light of multiple recent matches during the tournament being cancelled or disrupted.

<h2>South Africa vs Afghanistan: Weather forecast</h2>

With the faceoff beginning on June 26 at 8:30 PM local time (June 27, 6:00 AM IST), there are high chances of rain on the match day in Tarouba, Trinidad, as per weather.com.

However, the silver lining is that the rain forecast is mainly for the afternoon, while the match will start at 8:30 PM local time.&nbsp;

Between 1-3 PM local time, the chances of rain are 35-43%, but the conditions should get drier by the evening.

The current probability of rain around the start of the game is in single digits but may show a rise to 11% after 11 PM local time.

While the temperatures are expected to be between 26-27 degrees Celsius during the match, the weather will remain partly cloudy with humidity as high as 80-90%.

<h2>What if rain plays spoilsport in South Africa vs Afghanistan match?</h2>

Albeit the first semi-final between South Africa and Afghanistan has a reserve day, an additional 60 minutes will be provided before that on the scheduled day to finish the match. An extra 190 minutes will be added on the reserve day to try and reach a result.

Despite this, organisers will make every effort to finish the match on the scheduled day, even if it requires reducing overs.

Notably, both sides will need to bat a minimum of 10 overs per innings to complete the semi-final.&nbsp;

If the match begins on the scheduled day but has to be put on hold due to rain, it will resume from that point on reserve day.

<h2>What happens if South Africa vs Afghanistan match gets washed out?</h2>

South African scientists on Tuesday injected radioactive material into live&nbsp;rhino&nbsp;horns to make them easier to detect at border posts in a pioneering project aimed at curbing poaching.

The country is home to a large majority of the world's rhinos and as such is a hotspot for poaching driven by demand from Asia, where horns are used in traditional medicine for their supposed therapeutic effect.

At the Limpopo&nbsp;rhino&nbsp;orphanage in the Waterberg area, in the country's northeast, a few of the thick-skinned herbivores grazed in the low savannah.

James Larkin, director of the University of the Witwatersrand's radiation and health physics unit who spearheaded the initiative, told AFP he had put "two tiny little radioactive chips in the horn" as he administered the radioisotopes on one of the large animals' horns.

The radioactive material would "render the horn useless... essentially poisonous for human consumption" added Nithaya Chetty, professor and dean of science at the same university.

The dusty&nbsp;rhino, put to sleep and crouched on the ground, did not feel any pain, Larkin said.

The radioactive material's dose was so low it would not impact the animal's health or the environment in any way, he said.

In February the environment ministry said that, despite government efforts to tackle the illicit trade, 499 of the giant mammals were killed in 2023, mostly in state-run parks. This represents an 11 percent increase over the 2022 figures.

Twenty live rhinos in total would be part of the pilot Rhisotope project whereby they would be administered a dose "strong enough to set off detectors that are installed globally" at international border posts originally installed "to prevent nuclear terrorism", a pleased Larkin said, sporting a green hat and a khaki shirt.

Border agents often have handheld radiation detectors which can detect contraband in addition to thousands of radiation detectors installed at ports and airports, the scientists said.

<h2>'Best idea'</h2>

Rhino&nbsp;horns are highly sought after on black markets, where the price by weight rivals that of gold and cocaine.

According to Arrie Van Deventer, the orphanage's founder, dehorning the&nbsp;rhino&nbsp;and poisoning the horns have failed to deter poachers.

"Maybe this is the thing that will stop poaching", the tall, slim-built conservationist said. "This is the best idea I've ever heard".

Wildebeest, warthogs and giraffe roamed the vast conservation area as more than a dozen team members performed the delicate process on another&nbsp;rhino.

Larkin meticulously drilled a small hole into the horn, hammered in the radioisotope, then finished off by spraying 11,000 microdots all over the horn.&nbsp;

About 15,000 rhinos live in the southern African nation, according to an estimate by the international&nbsp;Rhino&nbsp;foundation.

The last phase of the project would be the animal's aftercare following "proper scientific protocol and ethical protocol", said the project's COO, a bubbly Jessica Babich.

The team would then take follow-up blood samples to ensure the rhinos were effectively protected.

The material would last five years on the horn, which was cheaper than dehorning every 18 months, Larkin said.

South Africa head coach Rob Walter says this Proteas team is different from the past which failed to win the close games. The comments came a day before South Africa's semi-final against Afghanistan in the ongoing T20 World Cup.&nbsp;

It is to be noted that the Proteas have won all of their games in the tournament so far despite most of them being close ones. Coach Walter says the misses of the past belong to the people who missed them.&nbsp;

South Africa have had a tendency to losing games under pressure and have never won an ICC title.

"The near misses in the past, they belong to the people who missed them," Walter said at the pre-match press conference.&nbsp;

"To be honest, this team is a different team. We own whatever is ours to own. And so, our nearest reflection point is this tournament where we've managed to get over the line. So that's what we think about," he added.

The SA coach, however, agreed there'll be anxiety mixed with excitement given the occasion.

"There'll be a mixture of emotions which is with anxiety but excitement and I think anyone in any sport, if they get to this phase of a competition, feels that. And so really, it's just acknowledging that and accepting it and then just understanding what you'll do with that. We still want to play our best cricket in the key moments of the game tomorrow," said Walter.

Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott, however, believes that the pressure is on Proteas and not them.

"This is uncharted territory for us. We're just going to go out there and give it our all. There's no preconceived ideas on it all, or history of failure or success in semi-finals in past years. For us it's a new challenge, and I think that makes us dangerous in the semi-finals as a side with nothing to lose and obviously a lot of pressure on the opposition," said the Afghan coach.

A weakened&nbsp;South&nbsp;African President Cyril Ramaphosa pledged on Wednesday that his new multi-party government would work to improve basic living conditions for all citizens as he was sworn in for a second term in office.

Ramaphosa's&nbsp;African National Congress will be sharing power with five other parties after it was humbled in a May 29 election, losing its parliamentary majority for the first time in 30 years of democracy.

The voters "have been unequivocal in expressing their disappointment and disapproval of our performance in some of the areas in which we have failed them," Ramaphosa said at his inauguration ceremony in the capital Pretoria.

He said the voters wanted everyone to have enough food, decent homes, clean water, affordable and uninterrupted electricity supply, well-maintained roads, good care for the sick and elderly, quality schools and other basic services.

"Today, I stand before you as your humble servant to say we have heard you," he said. "In this moment we must choose to move forward, to close the distances between&nbsp;South&nbsp;Africans and to build a more equal society."

The ANC remains the largest party after the election, followed by the pro-business Democratic Alliance, a critic of the ANC's record in office which has agreed to join the new government.

IDEOLOGICAL DIVISIONS

While investors have welcomed the inclusion of the DA, which wants to boost growth through structural reforms and prudent fiscal policies, analysts say sharp ideological divisions between the parties could make the government unstable.

Just before the election, Ramaphosa signed into law a National Health Insurance bill that the DA says could collapse a creaking health system. It was unclear what would happen to that law under the new government.

The DA advocates scrapping the ANC's flagship Black economic empowerment programme, saying it hasn't worked -- a highly contentious topic in a nation grappling with huge inequalities, some inherited from apartheid.

Ramaphosa has yet to announce the make-up of his new government, to be negotiated with members of the new alliance.

A former liberation movement, the ANC came to power under Nelson Mandela's leadership in the 1994 elections that marked the end of apartheid and had long been unbeatable, but it lost its shine after presiding over years of decline.

POVERTY AND CRIME

Weary of high levels of poverty and unemployment, rampant crime, rolling power cuts and corruption in party ranks, voters punished the ANC, which lost millions of votes on May 29 compared with the previous election in 2019.

"Our society remains deeply unequal and highly polarised," Ramaphosa said.

"We are divided between those who have jobs and those who do not work, between those who have the means to build and enjoy a comfortable life and those who do not."

African heads of state and dignitaries from as far afield as Cuba, a historical friend of the ANC, gathered outside the Union Buildings in Pretoria, seat of the&nbsp;South&nbsp;African government, to bear witness to Ramaphosa's inauguration.

A ceremony full of military pomp and pageantry began with inter-faith prayers by Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Jewish and traditional&nbsp;African religious leaders, reflecting the country's diversity.

Military helicopters flew past in blazing sunshine, trailing&nbsp;South&nbsp;African flags, to cheers from the audience.
