<p>The clarification came from party MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) Randeep Surjewala who wrote on Twitter that Sonia Gandhi had retired as president of the Congress and not from politics.</p>

<p>Randeep Surjewala also requested &quot;friends in the media to not rely upon innuendos.&quot;</p>

<p>Earlier today, media reports had quoted Sonia Gandhi as saying that she will retire from politics once her son Rahul Gandhi takes over the leadership of the party.</p>

<p>Rahul Gandhi, who has led the party in its campaigning for the Gujarat assembly elections, was elected as Congress president last week. He is expected to take over officially as Congress president on December 16.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sonia Gandhi has been struggling with health issues having had to cut short an election rally in Uttar Pradesh on one occasion this year and a visit to Shimla on another on account of ill-health.</p>

<p>In 2011, she had visited the US for surgery but the Congress refused to provide information about her health. She has been regularly visiting the US for health check-ups ever since.</p>
