A recently conducted study on mobile phone usage reveals that Indians, on an average, spend more than 1,800 hours on their smartphones in a year.&nbsp;

Global smartphone giant VIVO carried out the study titled ‘Smartphone and their impact on human relationships’ in association with Cybermedia Research (CMR).&nbsp;

The study looked at uninhibited smartphone usage as well as factors that influence smartphone users, their actions, moods and preferences.

Some of the key features that the study highlighted about an average Indian smartphone user included the fact that around 75 per cent of the people surveyed agreed to own a smartphone in their teens of them 41 per cent were hooked to the device even before graduating from high school.

- An average Indian spends one-third of their waking hours on their phone - roughly 1800 hours annually.&nbsp;

- 1 in 3 people feels that they can’t even have a 5-minute conversation without checking their phones.

- Over 70 per cent felt that the growing influence of smartphones is likely to impact mental and physical health.

- 3 out of 5 people believe in technology detox and say that it’s important to have a life separate from mobile phones.

The study was conducted based on an online survey with people, ageing 18 to 45 years - from across the top 8 cities in India.

As many as 2,000 Indians were surveyed for the study of which 36 per cent were females and 64 per cent were men.

There is a 400 per cent increase in the risk of brain cancer among teenagers due to excessive use of smart phones, says Professor Girish Kumar of the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai.

Speaking at the Aligarh Muslim University here on &#39;Radiation Hazards of Cell Phones&#39;, the scientist urged smartphone users not to take lightly the latest warnings pertaining to &quot;hidden dangers&quot; of technology, which stem from indiscriminate use of such devices.

He also categorically warned people from using smartphones more than 30 minutes a day.

Prof Girish Kumar from the Electrical Engineering Department of IIT Mumbai had recently submitted a report to the central government on the serious health hazards of excessive use of latest technology.

He pointed out that the release of free radicals into the human body due to excessive use of cell phones was also causing irreversible damage to male fertility.

The scientist stressed that children, in particular, were suffering grave threats to their health as &quot;a child&#39;s skull is thinner and easily penetrated by radiation&quot;.

Cell phone radiations are also causing serious effects on animal and plant life, he said.

Talking about the adverse impact of indiscriminate use of latest technology on youngsters, Prof Kumar said there was a 400 per cent increase in the risk of brain cancer among teenagers due to excessive use of smart phones.

&quot;Such radiation is causing irreversible damage to the human DNA, especially of youngsters. It is also responsible for a steep increase in sleep disorders and neurodegenerative diseases, Alzheimer and Parkinson&#39;s disease,&quot; he said.

The IIT professor added that one cannot wish away the latest technological developments, but it would be a fatal error if the society was not made aware of the serious health hazards, emanating from unbridled use of technology.
