"I feel selection has become so easy during these pandemic times. There are six matches – three T20Is and three ODIs. You have picked a squad of 25-20 players and five net bowlers. You could have included a couple of other players too, what did they do wrong? A wide-range of people including lawyers, civil society groups, IT professionals, trade unions, opposition leaders and religious bodies have filed the petition. They said that the Colombo Port City legislation violates Sri Lanka’s sovereignty, its constitution and labour rights.

They want the legislation to be cleared by a two-thirds majority of the Lankan parliament and by a referendum, if it has to become a law. The root of the problem is that the legislation removes all discretionary powers of Lankan regulators over the port and it mandates all investments at the port in foreign currency and not in Sri Lankan rupees.

It also states that all disputes will be solved through arbitration and not through Sri Lankan courts. The petitioners say these clauses could eventually turn the port and Sri Lanka itself into a Chinese colony.

The Indian embassy in Colombo said India expects the timely implementation of the agreement the three countries signed in 2019.&nbsp;

The Colombo port trade unions had opposed the proposal of investors from India and Japan buying 49 per cent stake in the ETC. They had demanded the ECT to remain 100 per cent owned by the SLPA as opposed to the 51 per cent.

Some 23 trade unions had joined hands to oppose the port deal.

India, Japan and Sri Lanka had signed the Memorandum of Intent for a trilateral arrangement for the project under the former Maithripala Sirisena-Ranil Wickremesinghe govt.&nbsp;

Under the arrangement, a Sri Lankan govt PSU - Sri Lankan Port Authority will hold majority share with the remaining share being held between Japanese and Indian entities.

The Indian reaction comes even as Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa assured the local worker's trade union that the terminal will not be sold or leased to any foreign entity.&nbsp;
