Iran's Revolutionary Guards said on Friday that its intelligence unit had foiled a bomb attack in the southern city of Shiraz, scene of a deadly shooting at a shrine on Wednesday.

Fars news, considered close to the Revolutionary Guards, quoted an unnamed security official as saying the bomb was found on Wednesday after the shrine attack. "It was a remote incendiary bomb," it said.

Sepah News — the Guards own news agency, which first reported the incident — said the bomb was found in the city's busy Mo'ali Abad Street.

The attack took place amid widespread anti-government protests. Iran's clerical rulers have faced nationwide demonstrations since the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, on Sept. 16.

Wednesday's shooting, which was claimed by Islamic State, killed 15 worshippers at the Shah Cheragh shrine.

Nationwide demonstrations organised by the government against the shooting were held following Friday prayers. Funerals were also due to take place for the victims.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed on Thursday to retaliate against those threatening the country's security, and officials said they had arrested a gunman who carried out the attack at the shrine.

Iran says bomb attack foiled in Shiraz on day of shooting

Islamic State terror group has claimed responsibility for the Shia holy shrine gun attack in southern Iran that killed at least 15 people and injured over 40 on Wednesday.

Three IS terrorists opened fire on worshippers at the Shah Cheragh shrine in Shiraz city, "killing at least 20 Shiites and wounded dozens of others", the radical Sunni Muslim jihadist group said in a statement via Telegram channels.

According to local reports, the attack was carried out by three armed men in the evening. The enforcement agencies have caught two of the terrorists while the hunt is on for the third one.

Earlier state-run Nour news reported that the attackers were not Iranian nationals.

According to Fars News Agency, one woman and two children were among those killed in Shiraz, a popular destination for pilgrimages and tourism.

It is a very rare incident as the last such attack to take place in the city was in April 2008 when a bomb planted in a mosque killed 14 people.

Condemning the attack, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi vowed “regrettable response” against those responsible for the Shiraz attack.

“Experience shows that Iran’s enemies, after failing to create a split in the nation’s united ranks, take revenge through violence and terror. This evil will definitely not go unanswered, and the security and law enforcement agencies will teach a lesson to those who designed the attack,” Raisi said, according to Tasnim news agency.

The Wednesday attack comes at a time when the nation is gripped by street protests against the regime over the custodial death of 23-year-old Mhasa Amini.

According to rights groups, more than 200 protesters have been killed and thousands have been arrested.

Several women and children were among those who lost their lives, the semi-official Tasnim news agency said. So far, there's no official confirmation.&nbsp;

The state media further mentioned that "three terrorists attacked the Shah Cheragh mausoleum in Shiraz". The agency quoted witnesses as saying that the attackers were in a car and shot at pilgrims and staff at the entrance to the shrine.&nbsp;

Two assailants were arrested and the police were looking for the third.&nbsp;

A media outlet associated with Iran's judiciary said the armed men had entered the shrine at 5:45pm (local time). A local media outlet also reported that the attackers were not Iranian nationals.&nbsp;

So far, no one has taken responsibility but IRNA said the attackers acted as "Takfiri terrorists" — a reference to the hardline, armed Sunni Islamist groups.&nbsp;

The attack happens on the same day when Iranian security forces opened fire at mourners who gathered at Mahsa Amini's Kurdish hometown of Saqez.&nbsp;

Violent protests sparked in Iran and abroad after 22-year-old Amini's death in the custody of morality police. Reports have suggested that she was detained for wearing her headscarf in an "improper" way.&nbsp;
