Meta stated in its most recent quarterly security report that the campaign was tracked back to STOIC, a Tel Aviv-based political marketing agency. The accounts posed as Jewish students, African Americans, and other concerned citizens, with a focus on audiences in the United States and Canada. This is the first time Meta has revealed the usage of text-based generative AI technology in such operations since its launch in late 2022.<o:p></o:p>

Researchers are concerned about the potential for generative AI to bolster disinformation campaigns and influence elections, as it can produce human-like text, pictures, and audio quickly and cheaply. Despite these concerns, Meta's security executives maintained that the novel AI technologies have not hampered their capacity to dismantle such influence networks.<o:p></o:p>

"There are various examples of how these networks use generative AI technology to create content. Perhaps it allows them to do it faster or with more volume. But it has not had much of an impact on our capacity to detect them," said Mike Dvilyanski, Meta's head of threat investigations, during a press call.<o:p></o:p>

The research identified six covert influence activities that Meta halted in the first quarter. Aside from the STOIC network, Meta also disassembled an Iran-based network dedicated to the Israel-Hamas conflict, albeit no generative AI was found in that campaign.<o:p></o:p>

Meta and other technology companies are facing the difficulty of preventing the misuse of new AI technologies, particularly in the context of elections. There have been reports that image generators from firms such as OpenAI and Microsoft have produced photographs containing voting-related disinformation, despite restrictions prohibiting such content.<o:p></o:p>

These firms have advocated digital tagging solutions to help identify AI-generated material as it is created. However, these technologies do not apply to text, and academics challenge their overall efficacy.<o:p></o:p>

With the impending elections in the European Union in June and in the United States in November, Meta's ability to combat such disinformation tactics will be tested significantly.<o:p></o:p>

Despite these concerns, Meta's security executives maintained that the novel AI technologies have not hampered their capacity to dismantle such influence networks. "There are various examples of how these networks use generative AI technology to create content. Perhaps it allows them to do it faster or with more volume. But it has not had much of an impact on our capacity to detect them," said Mike Dvilyanski, Meta's head of threat investigations, during a press call. The research identified six covert influence activities that Meta halted in the first quarter. Aside from the STOIC network, Meta also disassembled an Iran-based network dedicated to the Israel-Hamas conflict, albeit no generative AI was found in that campaign. Meta and other technology companies are facing the difficulty of preventing the misuse of new AI technologies, particularly in the context of elections. There have been reports that image generators from firms such as OpenAI and Microsoft have produced photographs containing voting-related disinformation, despite restrictions prohibiting such content. These firms have advocated digital tagging solutions to help identify AI-generated material as it is created. However, these technologies do not apply to text, and academics challenge their overall efficacy. With the impending elections in the European Union in June and in the United States in November, Meta's ability to combat such disinformation tactics will be tested significantly. In an unprecedented move, Germany has invited some 300 security experts from all nations playing in the tournament to take part in a monitoring project at the International Police Cooperation Centre (IPCC) in the western city of Neuss.

Alongside officials from Germany, Europol and European football body UEFA, they will take turns to monitor the situation on the ground, gathering during the tournament in a huge 500-square-metre (5,382-square-foot) conference room equipped with 129 computers and a 40-square-metre screen, AFP saw on a visit to the facility.

"Each country knows its troublemakers better than any other, and the foreign experts present in Neuss will be able to identify them more quickly," Oliver Strudthoff, director of the IPCC, told AFP.

"The size of the delegations will depend on the number of fans and how potentially dangerous they are. England, for example, will have many more representatives than Switzerland," he said.

At the matches themselves, all hands will be on deck -- police have been forbidden from taking leave during the tournament.

Germany will also introduce security controls on all of its nine borders.

"On trains and in stations, the federal police will be visibly stepping up their presence," said a spokesman for the German interior ministry. The same applies to airports.

French gendarmes will support the German police by taking part in joint rail patrols on routes to and from France and at matches involving the French team.

The British government has said that more than 1,600 English and Welsh supporters who are hit with stadium bans because of previous violent behaviour, will be banned from travelling to Germany during the tournament.

On top of the standard measures, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has said the Ukrainian national team will be subject to enhanced security.

Between 800 and 1,300 police will be deployed around the stadiums at each match, depending on the teams playing.

In a bid to prevent anyone from entering a match with weapons or explosives, three security perimeters will be set up around each stadium.

Cars will be checked at the first barrier, while fans will have their bags searched at the second, before scanning their tickets at the third.

The fan zones will also present a security challenge, especially the largest one at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate which is set to welcome tens of thousands of visitors for every match.

These "soft targets" are more vulnerable because "it's easier for perpetrators to infiltrate (them) and take action", said Johannes Saal, a security expert at the University of Lucerne.

The German army will also monitor the sky from the National Air Security Center, located some 70 kilometres (44 miles) from the IPCC.

The use of drones will be closely monitored, with flight restriction zones.

Iraqi authorities have executed at least 11 people convicted of "terrorism" this week, security and health sources said Wednesday, with rights group Amnesty International condemning an "alarming lack of transparency".

Under Iraqi law, terrorism and murder offences are punishable by death, and execution decrees must be signed by the president.

A security source in Iraq's southern Dhi Qar province told AFP that 11 "terrorists from the Islamic State group" were executed by hanging at a prison in the city of Nasiriyah, "under the supervision of a justice ministry team".

A local medical source confirmed that the health department had received the bodies of 11 executed people.

They were hanged on Monday "under Article 4 of the anti-terrorism law", the source added, requesting anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue.

All 11 were from Salahaddin province and the bodies of seven had been returned to their families, the medical official said.

Iraqi courts have handed down hundreds of death and life sentences&nbsp;in recent years for people convicted of membership in "a terrorist group", an offence that carries the death penalty regardless of whether the defendant had been an active fighter.

Iraq has been criticised for trials denounced by rights groups as hasty, with confessions sometimes said to have been obtained under torture.

Amnesty in a statement on Wednesday condemned the latest hangings for "overly broad and vague terrorism charges".

It said a total of 13 men were executed on Monday, including 11 who had been "convicted on the basis of their affiliation to the so-called Islamic State armed group".

The two others, arrested in 2008, "were convicted of terrorism-related offences under the Penal Code after a grossly unfair trial", Amnesty said citing their lawyer.

The Britain-based rights group denounced "a disturbing lack of transparency regarding executions in Iraq in recent months".

"The Iraqi government must immediately establish an official moratorium on executions and work towards abolishing the death penalty entirely," said Razaw Salihy, Iraq researcher at Amnesty.

In late January, UN experts looking into capital punishment in Iraq expressed their "deep concern at reports that Iraq has begun mass executions in its prison system".
