<p>A BBC report added that&nbsp;over 50 had sustained minor injuries while eight were being treated for more significant injuries as the double-decker bus crashed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NIAS said five fire appliances and the specialist rescue team were&nbsp;currently at the scene. The children were reportedly pulled out through windows of the vehicle that had tipped over into a nearby field.</p>

<p>“It’s every parent's worst nightmare.&nbsp;A child’s journey to and from school always causes worry, and this is just horrendous," local councillor Robert Adair said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I am asking everyone to pray at the current time while emergency services deal with this clearly very serious situation," Adair added, informing that he had spoken to a number of parents and the police.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Peter Wray, an Ulster Unionist party councillor, said the incident did not involve any other vehicle.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I think there was also some buses that were potentially behind, so some pupils will have seen this. As well as the people directly [affected], it could also cause some stress for other pupils or other people who have seen this incident and have been distressed by it," said Wray.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a public message,&nbsp;NIAS urged the citizens to only call it in case of emergencies as the resources had been directed to the crash site.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"NIAS is currently dealing with a major incident at Carrowdore involving a bus with up to 70 passengers. NIAS has dispatched multiple resources to the scene. Please only call 999 if your situation is life-threatening while we deal with this incident," it said on Facebook.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Twelve&nbsp;children&nbsp;were killed in South Africa on Wednesday when a minibus taking them to school near Johannesburg&nbsp;overturned and caught fire after being hit by another vehicle, authorities said.</p>

<p>The driver of the minibus was also killed and seven other&nbsp;children&nbsp;were rushed to hospital, according to officials in Johannesburg's Gauteng province.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Television images showed that the minibus was totally destroyed by the fire in the early morning crash in Merafong, more than 70 kilometres (45 miles) west of the city.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Charred schoolbook pages were scattered on the tarmac, as police examined the scene. &nbsp;</p>

<p>"A private scholar transport minibus was involved in a tragic accident in the Kokosi-Wedela area in Merafong, claiming the lives of the 12 learners and their driver," the Gauteng government said in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It could not immediately give the ages of the&nbsp;children&nbsp;but said most were from a primary school, where students are normally aged between six and 13.</p>

<p>"Seven other learners have been rushed to a medical facility for urgent medical attention," it added.</p>

<p>Police were investigating what happened but it appeared that the minibus was struck from behind by a small pick-up truck, causing it to overturn and subsequently catch fire, authorities said. .&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I am profoundly saddened by this tragic event," Gauteng education minister Matome Chiloane said.</p>

<p>"The loss of our&nbsp;children&nbsp;is a devastating blow to our community, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and injured learners".</p>
